It was the first season of The Barnstormers, founded by Francis and Alice Cleveland and Ed Goodnow. Francis, the youngest child of President Grover Cleveland, was already pursuing a career on Broadway when The Barnstormers made its debut in the family’s summer hometown of Tamworth, New Hampshire. The original troupe was composed mostly of young actors – recent graduates from colleges including Harvard, Wellesley, Radcliffe and Amherst. The first director was Goodnow, a graduate of Harvard and George Pierce Baker’s “47 Workshop” which later became the renowned Yale School of Drama. The name “The Barnstormers” was a natural choice as it described exactly what the theatre troupe did – barnstorming from town to town, opening on Monday in Tamworth THE BARNSTORMERS The Oldest Continuously Operating Professional Summer and then touring towns in Maine and New Hampshire during the week, returning for a Stock Theatre in the Country final Saturday evening performance in Tamworth at the Tamworth Gardens – a former Join us as we embark on our Young Frankenstein boxing venue where the audience was often greeted by former First Lady Frances 89th Season of bringing live By: Mel Brooks and Thomas Meehan • June 25-July 4 Cleveland dressed in a formal gown. Betty Schneider’s Chocorua Bakery Gives Back with Swedish Fika By Ryan Pacheco The first and third Saturdays of the month are a busy time for Betty Schneider, owner of Scandinavian Baking in Scandinavian Baking Chocorua. Twice a month, her downstairs parlor-turned bakery shop holds “Fika,” a Swedish tradition in which Creatively Baking with Love & Butter Since 2007! time is spared to enjoy fresh coffee, tea and baked goods with friends, family, and the community. On this day, a slice of Scandinavian Almond Cake is complementary, Stop by, and enjoy homemade freshly baked goods! along with coffee and tea. During Fika, there’s always Coffee & Tea are always on the house! room for one more guest, as homes and families open up to enjoy peace and camaraderie with all enter. “Human interaction has been sacrificed at an alarming rate in recent years. Families sit down toeat together, only to individually isolate themselves into their phones. It’s heartbreaking to watch, and Fika is a time to do more than be alone together,” Betty told this reporter. “Growing up, Celebrating my mother would always host Fika, as is a tradition in our family’s native Sweden. It was open 13 Years! to anyone, and often the postman or handy-man working on our property would be seated at our table with us, eating and enjoying a moment to just sit and talk about life or something. In hindsight, I wonder if the postman would time his route, as to show up in time for Fika.” While baking was always a passion, Betty would have hardly guessed her authentic creations would ever become a business venture, let alone earn her media attention, such as coverage by a 2016 episode of New Hampshire Chronicle. She has also been awarded New Hampshire Magazine’s “Best of 2017”, and even received commemoration from the Governor of New Hampshire, for her efforts to bring the tradition of Fika to the state. Having relocated from New Orleans with her husband 13 years ago, Betty opened for business a mere year later, originally operating a baked goods cart before moving the operation into her home. Since opening for business 12 years ago, Scandinavian Baking has received overwhelming praise from the community, as well as tourists. “People come in as strangers, but leave as friends. It’s just a wonderful thing to behold, and Fika seems to be bringing people together. I’ve sold out of all but one cake, and witnessed customers who have never met, offer to buy in halves Cardamon Raisin Bread, Almond Cake, so that each person could walk away with something delicious.” The sense of wholesomeness Muffins, Cookies & More! and welcoming only increases over the summer, when customers can sit outside on the porch, enjoying casual conversation and a warm summer’s breeze. Traditionally, the first and third Saturday of every month is when Fika is held from noon to one OPEN YEAR ROUND! o’clock, however Betty Schneider offers Fika every Saturday. The shop is open Tuesday through Open Tuesday through Saturday 7am-4pm; Closed Sunday & Monday Saturday from 7am-4pm. Coffee and tea are always complementary, and every detail is considered 603-323-2021 • 603-662-6047 to give her customers an experience worth repeating.
