Srinivasa Chari, interrelate Ālvār mysticism, female voice, and the one female Ālvār, Āṇṭāḷ. Although both Hardy and Chari define Ālvār mysticism through female voice and uphold Āṇṭāḷ as mystic par excellence, they miss important nuances of Āṇṭāḷ’s poetry that radicalise female voice and frustrate gendered expectations. Āṇṭāḷ’s mysticism proves to be socially and theologically subversive, laying claim to authority even over the divine. In her gendered genealogy of Christian mysticism, Grace Jantzen shows how the definition and delimitation of mysticism is inexorably connected with power and gender. -
Is the Gaudiya Vaishnava Sampradaya Connected to the Madhva Line?
Is the Gaudiya Vaishnava sampradaya connected to the Madhva line? Is the Gaudiya Vaishnava sampradaya connected to the Madhva line? – Jagadananda Das – The relationship of the Madhva-sampradaya to the Gaudiya Vaishnavas is one that has been sensitive for more than 200 years. Not only did it rear its head in the time of Baladeva Vidyabhushan, when the legitimacy of the Gaudiyas was challenged in Jaipur, but repeatedly since then. Bhaktivinoda Thakur wrote in his 1892 work Mahaprabhura siksha that those who reject this connection are “the greatest enemies of Sri Krishna Chaitanya’s family of followers.” In subsequent years, nearly every scholar of Bengal Vaishnavism has cast his doubts on this connection including S. K. De, Surendranath Dasgupta, Sundarananda Vidyavinoda, Friedhelm Hardy and others. The degree to which these various authors reject this connection is different. According to Gaudiya tradition, Madhavendra Puri appeared in the 14th century. He was a guru of the Brahma or Madhva-sampradaya, one of the four (Brahma, Sri, Rudra and Sanaka) legitimate Vaishnava lineages of the Kali Yuga. Madhavendra’s disciple Isvara Puri took Sri Krishna Chaitanya as his disciple. The followers of Sri Chaitanya are thus members of the Madhva line. Less attention, however, has been paid to comparable developments within the regionally situated vernacular religious traditions. The present dissertation addresses this issue by considering how several distinctly vernacular Śaiva traditions in Tamil-speaking Southern India transformed through the impact of the colonial encounter. At the center of this transformation, which produced “Tamil Śaivism” as a monolithic Tamil religion, was a shift in the way in which these sectarian traditions articulated and contested specific interpretations of Śaiva theology and sacred textuality. Chapter One contextualizes the thesis’ arguments by focusing on the internally diverse character of early-modern Tamil Śaiva intellectual culture, and more especially on the phenomenon of pan-sectarianism in two contemporary eclectic Tamil Vīraśaiva treatises. The next three chapters explore how such pan-sectarian claims were placed under enormous pressure in the nineteenth century. Chapter Two examines a low-caste commentary on a classic of Tamil Advaita Vedānta that attempts to critique the orthodox religious establishment and reinscribe Śaivism as a monism. -

[1] The term Bhagav ān does not appear in Vedas, nor in early or middle Upanishads.[2] The oldest Sanskrit texts use the term Brahman to represent an abstract Supreme Soul, Absolute Reality, while using names of deities like Krishna, Vishnu, Shiva to represent gods and goddesses. Bhagvan Krishna The term Ishvara appears in later Vedas and middle Upanishads where it is used to discuss spiritual concepts. [3][4] The word Bhagav ān is found in later era literature, such as the Bhagavad Gita and the Purana s. [2] In Bhakti school literature, the term is typically used for any deity to whom prayers are offered; for example, Rama, Ganesha, Kartikeya, Krishna, Shiva or Vishnu. -

Charismatic Renewal in Gaudiya Vaishnavism (Part I) Charismatic renewal and institutionalization in the history of Gaudiya Vaishnavism and the Gaudiya Math – Jagadananda Das – “History is the biographies of great men.” Thomas Carlyle. If traditional India could be said to subscribe to a theory of history, it would be the “great man theory,” which holds that history moves by the actions of great men upon it. Perhaps the best known of the Bhagavad-gita’s 700 verses is the one in which Krishna promises to appear in the world whenever there is irreligious practice or rampant injustice in human society (Gita 4.7). However different this belief may be from the Shi’a’s belief in the Mahdi or the Jew’s expectation of a Messiah, its influence has been equally pervasive in Hindu society. Not only has it led to messianic hopes for a savior, but also to the conviction that wherever or whenever greatness appears in human society, it is a manifestation of the divine (Gita 10.42). Though such a belief can naturally be exploited for political ends or to buttress the status quo, it has also played a role in the religious sphere as a means of legitimizing change. It thus seems that almost every prominent spiritual leader who makes a mark on Hindu society sooner or later claims to be an avatar, or becomes, as the Indian media disparagingly call them, “a God-man.” This belief is present in almost every branch of Hinduism, whether Vaishnava, Shakta or Shaiva, though its expression may take different forms. -

THE ROLE AND LARGER MEANING OF SAKHI IN INDIAN DANCE 2 Preface: While the sakhī has been a perennial presence right from the Sangam age and the Vedic age even, if we may say so; not much thought has been given to her vital presence or philosophical inferences, if any. Composers down the ages have generally couched deep significances of Indian philosophy and thought within poetic imagery. The sakhī comes out as a very interesting conundrum. How does one infer her presence. While many aver her to be in place of the Guru, many have also argued against that possibility saying then, she would need to be venerated. The prime and living characterisation of the sakhī was clearly seen in Kalidasa‟s „Shakuntala‟ where she assumed a highly important role and meaning. This study was to largely and generally look into the many facets associated with the sakhī. Understanding her presence and meaning through many compositions used in Bharata Natyam and other dance styles was one way that was adopted. While the aim was lofty, I still feel much more can be done to give a more clear analysis and philosophical meaning to her raison d‟etre of existence. This work can thus be deemed to be a starting point. It was a supposition to check whether the sakhī was merely an imaginative idea as conveyed through many dance compositions or whether she could be the mind or the heart or inner conscience. -
Translating Wisdom: Hindu-Muslim Intellectual Interactions in Early Modern South Asia
Religion | AsiAn studies NAIR TRANSLATING WISDOM During the height of Muslim power in Mughal South Asia, Hindu and Muslim schol- ars worked collaboratively to translate a large body of Hindu Sanskrit texts into the Persian language. Translating Wisdom reconstructs the intellectual processes that underlay these translations. Using as a case study the 1597 Persian rendition of the Yoga-Vāsis.t.ha—an influential and popular Sanskrit philosophical tale—Shan- kar Nair illustrates how these early modern scholars drew upon their respective tra- ditions to forge a common vocabulary through which to understand one another. These scholars thus achieved, Nair argues, a nuanced cultural exchange significant not only to South Asia’s past but also its present. “An erudite and valuable contribution. At one time, they were considered lower caste.2 F RIEDHELM H ARDY chal- lenged this thesis by arguing that they had a strong elite component as indicated by their use of the terms k 0 , k 0 n (which mean head/ chief/king), and # l v # r (noble person/saint).3 Some of them (such as To3<ara< ippo< i, Periy$ l v $ r, and his daughter #3<$/) were Br $ hma3 as according to the hymns themselves; others (such as Kulac( karan and Tiruma* kai) might have been chiefs. Whatever their social identity, these bhakti poet-saints developed a distinct religious identity based on Tamil hymns with early ca( kam poetic tropes; a northern deity (N $ r $ ya3 a-Vi:3u-K 6:3a 4 ); and concepts of refuge and service.5 How that happened remains obscure. 1 I would like to thank L ESLIE O RR forgenerously showing me her published and unpublished work on South Indian inscriptions and discuss- ing several drafts of this essay.
