APPLICATION FOR MEMBERSHIP UNDERGRADUATE STUDENT APPLICATION

Congratulations on your academic achievement in the baccalaureate nursing program. Tau International Honor Society of Nursing provides leadership and scholarship in practice, education, and research to enhance the health of all people. Its members support the learning and professional development of its members who strive to improve nursing care worldwide. Furthermore, the Society promotes the use of nursing research in health care delivery and makes its resources available to all people and institutions interested in the latest knowledge in nursing care.

Members of Sigma Theta Tau International are nurses who have demonstrated personal commitment to nursing excellence. Membership is more than an academic destination; it is a dynamic partnership to be integrated and renewed throughout your career.

Sigma Theta Tau began at Kent State University in 1975 as the School of Nursing Honors Organization, with the formation of a constitution and admission requirements modeled after those established by Sigma Theta Tau. The Nursing Honors Organization was reviewed for acceptance as a Sigma Theta Tau Chapter in the fall of 1979, and accepted as the Chapter in November 1979. The first members were inducted in the spring of 1980.

The Delta Xi Chapter Eligibility Committee is now accepting applications from students who wish to be considered for induction into Sigma Theta Tau International.

Criteria for membership as an undergraduate student include submission of evidence of completion of the following requirements.

1. Enrollment in the Kent State University College of Nursing baccalaureate nursing program. 2. Completion of at least ½ of the nursing curriculum 3. Ranking in the upper 35% of the graduating class 4. Cumulative grade point average of at least a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale 5. Two letters of endorsement from members of Sigma Theta Tau International, one which must be from a Kent State faculty member. 6. Meet the expectation of academic integrity

Process

The Membership Intent Form and two letters of endorsement are to be downloaded from the Delta Xi website located at http://www.kent.edu/nursing. Click on the link ‘Associations’. There is an additional link for the Delta Xi Chapter at this site. Forms are provided under eligibility/membership. Once the forms are completed they are to be submitted via e-mail attachment to Gingy Stypa ([email protected]), Administrative Assistant OR together (as a packet) to the Sigma Theta Tau mailbox in Room 113, Henderson Hall College of Nursing by March 15, 2014. If you are submitting your application by e-mail attachment, you may scan the signed letters of endorsement and send them by attachment.

The “Membership Intent Form” is to be completed by each applicant. You will also find “Endorsement for Membership” forms; these are to be completed by persons who endorse your membership in Sigma Theta Tau International. At least one of your endorsees must be a faculty member and both must be members of Sigma Theta Tau International. Remember, if submitting materials by e-mail, it will be necessary to scan and attach your endorsement forms. ALL OF THE COMPLETED FORMS ARE TO BE SUBMITTED by E-MAIL ATTACHMENT OR RETURNED TOGETHER IN ONE PACKET TO THE OFFICE OF THE COLLEGE OF NURSING NO LATER THAN, OR POSTMARKED BY, March 15, 2014. All properly completed applications will be considered. All G.P.A.’s and endorsement information of prospective members are reviewed by Faculty Counselors and may be reviewed by other members of the Eligibility Committee.

Sigma Theta Tau International provides support for membership to a limited number of applicants who experience severe financial challenges. The Edith Anderson Membership Subsidy Fund has been established for this purpose. A description and application for this fund is available on the Sigma Theta Tau website.

If you are accepted for membership, there will be an $85.00 induction fee (includes both local and international fees). This also covers your first year membership. Renewal feels for the organization are $90.00 per year. Those accepted will be inducted at a ceremony scheduled for April 27, 2014. Please keep this in mind.
