When I put my hand in my pocket The Cross To bring out a coin or key The cross is there to remind me in My Pocket Of the price He paid for me I carry a cross in my pocket It reminds me, too, to be thankful A simple reminder to me For my blessings day by day Of the fact that I am a Christian And to strive to serve Him better No matter where I may be In all that I do and say

This little cross is not magic It’s also a daily reminder Nor is it a good luck charm Of the peace and comfort I share It isn’t meant to protect me With all who know my Master From every physical harm And give themselves to His care

It’s not for identification So, I carry a cross in my pocket For all the world to see Reminding no one but me It’s simply an understanding That Jesus Christ is Lord of my life Between my Saviour and me If only I’ll let Him be.

2 The Iona Pastoral Centre Celebrating 20 Years

Brid O’Connell (RIP), Bernie Rosney, Debbie Moore Borland and now Lynda Bradshaw-Dunn; plus dedicated staff and loyal volunteers, together with tremendous support from the Carmelite Community in Knocklyon. There is a buzz of activity here each day of the week with all the groups, and a very important place in the Centre is the Coffee Dock, where it is said the best scones in Ireland are baked – open from 9.30am to 2.30pm daily. The centre is in great shape and it is hoped that this will continue for the years ahead.

Sunday 8th March, 2020 was a joyous occasion – the 20th anniversary of the Iona Pastoral Centre. A venue providing for meetings, activities and courses like Healing, Parenting, History, Parish Ministry and Spirituality; a place of welcome. The Iona Pastoral Centre moved from a prefabricated building into a fine purpose-built centre 20 years ago. There were a number of successful years in the pre-fab but this was in poor condition and deteriorating rapidly. The Knocklyon community was growing and a larger facility was needed. In came designers Fitzgerald Kavanagh Associates who designed the lovely centre we have today – The Iona Pastoral Centre. It is satisfying to note that some of the groups who were in place from the start are still using the centre today, such as the HSE Mother and Baby Clinic, the History Society and Yoga. There are now many more groups on the books, both fee-paying and parish groups, which include Bridge, GROW Mental Health Movement, Knitter’s Corner, Slimming World, The Parish Forum, SVP, the Eucharistic Ministers and Ministers of the Word meetings, to name but a few. The Iona Centre are very pleased that the Men’s Shed and the Women’s Group, which started from the Centre in 2019, are now well established. The Iona Pastoral Centre has been a great success over the years thanks to committed managers such as

The cycle starts at 9am at St. Enda’s GGA Club. Raglan Rollers are looking for local people to join the cycle and help raise € 20,000. There are two routes - the 35km Johnny Foxes loop for leisure cyclists and the 115km Blessington Loop for the serious cyclist who likes an up-hill challenge. You can register or donate at www,raglanrollers.ie. For non-cyclists there is a big music celebration planned later the same night in Ballyboden Club with well-known trad band Rake the Ashes. ARC Cancer Support offers emotional and psychological support free of charge to people affected by cancer and their families. We are currently looking for volunteers to work in our drop in centres. Training will be provided. For more information, call 01-707888 or Email: [email protected]

4 It is a very sad story as Peter was misdiagnosed with skin allergies in early 2017, diagnosed with Lymphoma in August 2017 and deceased in March 2018. His was a truly horrific cancer journey and Raglan Rollers are trying to help other families in terms of symptom awareness to getting early diagnosis and suitable treatment - the key to successful management of Blood Cancer. On February 18th, The Raglan Rollers launched the Blood Cancer Symptoms leaflet in St. James Hospital. It was a great day as they met lots of people currently undergoing treatment and are heartened that the spotlight is on their condition.

Some of the symptoms of lymphoma are:

• A painless swelling in your neck, armpit or groin • Drenching night sweats • High temperatures or fevers • Loss of appetite • Unexplained weight loss • Feeling tired all the time (fatigue) • Itchy skin

Please support this charity through participation in the cycle or a donation online at www,raglanrollers.ie. You can contact the team at [email protected].

All proceeds will go to Blood Cancer Research for The late Peter O Reilly specific identified needs.

Gaeilge - Caith Amach É All 6th year students who study Irish attended the show called “Caith Amach É” on Friday 6th March. The show is based on the 20 Sraith Pictiúir that all students must study as part of their Irish oral. The students really enjoyed the show and it will greatly benefit them in the exam.

Blood Brothers On Wednesday 26th February, 190 second and third year students attended a performance of “Blood Brothers” in the Bord Gais Theatre. The students left the school at lunchtime and were treated to a wonderful display by renowned actress and singer Rebecca Storm in the lead role. The students and teachers thoroughly enjoyed the live performance.

Girls Basketball Congratulations to the Senior team who reached their second All Ireland Final this year. Unfortunately, St Patrick's Academy, Dungannon beat them this time round in the league final and they narrowly lost 44-40. To reach two All Ireland B finals is a great achievement and something the school has never done before. Both the first and second year girls’ teams are in the East region semi finals. They are both one match away from reaching the All Ireland Playoffs, so fingers crossed they can get close to the senior teams achievements.

The students took part in guided meditation and outdoor activities with a faith dimension. As the sun shone, everyone had a good day.

The third annual breakfast fundraiser for the adult hurlers was held on February 29th and proved again to be a very sociable occasion. It has grown in strength each year, and again this year we had young and old from all sections of the club enjoying the culinary skills of our own Paddy Brady. We cannot thank Paddy and his staff enough for sponsoring this event. Without his skills and organization this event just would not happen.

The 2019 Boden News Annual is now available in the club. Packed with news, reviews and features and a special Caoga Bliain ag Fás section. It’s a must read for all club members!

Congratulations to Seán G Ó Murchú from Colaiste Eanna who won a massive € 15,000 on the club lotto recently, our highest ever jackpot!

11 Zero Waste – Sustainable Living Talk On Tuesday 3rd March we invited Elaine Butler, activist and blogger, to speak about Zero Waste and Sustainable Living. Elaine has previously given talks at Bloom 2019 spoken on Nationwide and Claire Byrne Live. Elaine is particularly interested in plastic waste and what we can do to avoid it. The easiest way to live more sustainably is to have less and use less. Elaine’s blog is all about how to do that as easily and as economically as possible. The key is to refuse, reduce, reuse, repurpose and rehome before we recycle, rot and then dump. Some hints and tips from Elaine: Refuse: Saying no to that freebie pen, t-shirt, refusing packaged food. Reduce: Reduce waste food by freezing food, soups etc. in glass jars. Reuse: Use reusable water-bottles, coffee cups, shopping bags. Try to use refill containers in the kitchen especially. Repurpose: Find another use for something.
