NORTH CAROLINA CIRCULATION: 15,000 VOL, 83, NO. 60 Football beats UNC 25-10 to reclaim bell By BRENT BELVIN CHAPEL HILL — The Victory Bell, given to the win ner of the annual season-ending Duke-North Carolina football game, returns to Durham after the Blue Devils pasted the Tar Heels 25-10 Saturday afternoon in Chapel Hill. The victory raised Duke's record to 5-6, the Blue Devils' best record since 1982, while UNC dropped to 5-6. In a season full of narrow and bitter defeats, eighteen seniors were able to walk away from their collegiate ca reers on a positive note. At halftime, however, they might have wondered if Duke was on its way to another devastating loss. Sophomore placekicker Doug Peterson had missed an extra-point after Duke's first touchdown, and after a penalty nullified a touchdown pass, senior quarterback Steve Slayden threw an ill-advised pass that was picked off in the endzone. Instead of leading by seven at halftime, Duke found it self down by one — 10-9. But the Blue Devils, aided by injuries to Tar Heel quarterback Mark Maye and star tailback Torin Dorn, exploded in the second half to out- LANCE MORITZ/THE CHRONICLE score the Tar Heels 16-0. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 9/22/19 http://twitter.com/NFL345 SEVEN FROM SUNDAY – WEEK 3 A look at seven statistical highlights from games played at 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. ET on Sunday, September 22, the third week of the 2019 season. • Four teams that missed the postseason in 2018 – the BUFFALO BILLS (3-0), DETROIT LIONS (2-0-1), GREEN BAY PACKERS (3-0) and SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS (3-0) – are undefeated through the first three weeks of the 2019 season. 2019 marks the fourth time that at least four teams have started the season undefeated through their first three games after missing the postseason the previous year since 1990 when the current playoff format was instituted, joining 2013, 2003 and 2002. • The NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS defeated the New York Jets, 30-14, in Week 3. New England is the first team to not allow a passing or rushing touchdown in each of their first three games of a season in the Super Bowl era. Additionally, the Patriots are the first team to hold opponents scoreless in the first half of five consecutive games, including the postseason, the longest such streak in the Super Bowl era. Patriots quarterback TOM BRADY, who passed for 306 yards and two touchdowns in the victory, has 71 career games with at least 300 passing yards and two touchdowns, surpassing PEYTON MANNING (70) for the second-most such games in NFL history. Only DREW BREES (93) has more such performances in league annals. • Appearing in his 20th career game, Kansas City quarterback PATRICK MAHOMES passed for 374 yards with three touchdowns and zero interceptions for a 132.0 rating in the Chiefs’ 33-28 win over Baltimore.

  • Famous NFL Couples Throughout History
A DESTINY’S CHILD TO MARRY A DALLAS COWBOY There was one big offseason engagement … A big offseason wedding … And a “Save-The-Day” move by an NFL quarterback for his famous wife. NFL players and their well-known wives (or wives-to-be) certainly had a busy offseason this spring and summer. In May, Dallas Cowboys Pro Bowl safety ROY WILLIAMS proposed to Grammy Award-winning singer KELLY ROWLAND of the singing group Destiny’s Child. Williams proposed to Rowland in New York in a room filled with friends, including Rowland’s fellow Destiny’s Child singer Beyonce. The wedding date has not been set. In June, Williams’ new teammate, running back EDDIE GEORGE, married yet another singer, TAMARA JOHNSON of the R&B group Sisters With Voices. How did Eddie propose to Tamara? The couple was standing on New York’s Brooklyn Bridge and George had a five-carat ring delivered by an English bulldog. That’s original! Like with all married couples, one had to lean on the other this June.
