INTRODUCTION Far too many—if not most—of us in the legal profession who belong to both the disability and LGBTQþ communities have known informally, through our own experi- ences and those of others like us, that workplace bias and discrimination on the basis of disability, sexuality, and gender identity is still widespread. The key contestations have revolved around three issues: First, the question of who constitutes a woman; second, what constitute feminist interests; and third, how trans* politics intersects with feminist politics. Despite decades of debates and scholarship, these impasses remain unbroken. In this article, our aim is to work out a way through these impasses. We argue that all three types of contestations are deeply invested in notions of identity, and therefore dealt with in an identitarian way. This has not been constructive in resolving the antagonistic relationship between the trans* movement and feminism. We aim to disentangle the antagonism within anti-trans* feminist politics on the one hand, and trans* politics’ responses to that antagonism on the other. In so doing, we argue for a politics of status-based recognition (drawing on Fraser, 2000a, 2000b) instead of identity-based recognition, highlighting individuals’ specific needs in soci- ety rather than women’s common interests (drawing on Jónasdóttir, 1991), and conceptualising the intersections of the trans* movement and feminism as mutually shaping rather than as trans* as additive to the feminist project (drawing on Walby, 2007, and Walby, Armstrong, and Strid, 2012).

Bodyminds Reimagined: (Dis)ability, Race, and Gender in Black Women’s Speculative Fiction. Duke UP, 2018. Bodyminds Reimagined is a compelling critical study of the points of contact and convergence between disability studies and Black feminist studies in contemporary Black women ’s spec- ulative fiction. In the first monograph focusing exclusively on the representation of disability by Black authors, Schalk meticulously sketches the contours of the various fields with which Bodyminds Reimagined converses. Schalk begins with the stance that “(dis)ability is rarely accounted for in black feminist theory ” and that disability studies “has often avoided issues of race ” (3 –4). Speculative fiction, Schalk argues, is a rich site to interrogate the contact between Black feminist theory and disability studies because the nonrealist genre elements allow authors to “reimagine the possibilities of bodyminds ” (17) and posit alternative constructions of identity in nonreal worlds that in turn “force readers to question the ideologies undergirding these categories ” (18). Bodyminds Reimagined considers Black women ’s speculative fiction published after 1970 using a three-pronged methodology: rejecting the good/bad binary that characterizes much scholarship on representations of disability; attending to more than just character analysis in close reading individual texts; and approaching speculative worlds on their own terms and reading them through their nonrealist rules. Bodyminds Reimagined is not only a vital examination of disability within Black fiction, but also a methodological manual of sorts for scholars inspired to continue this intellectual project. But what is a “bodymind ”? Schalk borrows this vocabulary from the materialist feminist disability scholarship by Margaret Price.

Walton, Ed.D. Introduction : Over a decade ago, Eddie Glenn called attention to the disparate treatment of African American women with disabilities, suggesting that a triple jeopardy syndrome puts them at a further disadvantage because they are victims of race, gender, and disability bias in our society. Her research explored what it means to be an African American and live with a disability. She also found that African American women with disabilities contribute disproportionately to the population of under educated American women and are least likely to have a high school diploma, do not vigorously participate in the labor force because of the severity of the disability, and are least likely to be married or living in a family arrangement. The impact of triple jeopardy, she found, is observed in several aspects of the lives of African American women with disabilities, including support and family relationships, education, participation in the rehabilitation process, and employment and income (Glenn, 1992). The 1980s saw a flurry of interest in women with physical disabilities (for example, amputees, paraplegics, quadriplegics), but little attention was devoted to the subject in the 1990s, (Danek, 1992). Today, even though a body of literature exists that examines and criticizes rehabilitation services for African Americans with disabilities, there remains a scarcity of literature dedicated to examining the lived experiences of African American women with disabilities, particularly related to self-esteem, self-efficacy and sexual identity.

In today’s world, LGBT issues are being discussed more than ever before…in the media, in community programs, in schools, churches, offices, in the streets, and in people’s homes. These discussions are often emotionally charged as this can be a threatening topic for many people, and clear information is often difficult to find. Being an ally is important, but it is challenging as well as exciting. This list is not exhaustive, but provides some starting points. Add your own ideas and suggestions! Don’t assume heterosexuality. We tend to assume that everyone we meet is heterosexual even though we know this is not true. Often people hide that they are LGBT until they know it is safe to “come out” in a given situation. Use neutral language when first working with students/clients/customers until you know for certain what the person prefers (for example, the gender of their significant other). Educate yourself about lesbian, gay, bi, and transgender issues. There are many resources, reading lists, and organizations available for information. Don’t be afraid to ask questions. Explore ways to creatively integrate LGBT issues in your work. Doing so can be a valuable process for everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Integrating LGBT people and issues instead of separating them out as a “special topic” is an important strategy for conveying and creating respect and acceptance.

However, less attention is paid to the sexuality of people diagnosed with intellectual disabilities. This narrative review summarises what is currently known about the level of sexual health knowledge of people with intellectual disabilities. A literature review was conducted of the published literature using Google Scholar, PubMed, PsychInfo, EBSCOhost, and Science Direct. Forty eight articles were identified that addressed the question about the level of sexual health knowledge of people with intellectual disabilities. Overall, studies demonstrate that people with intellectual disabilities are highly variable in levels of sexual knowledge, but on average have a range of deficits in knowledge compared to non-disabled individuals. More tailored education and support in accessing formal and informal sources of information are needed. However, disabled Christians are capable of being active agents in churches, with service, ministry and theologies of their own to offer. In Part A, I explore the discourses that have historically functioned in churches to marginalise disabled Christians. Using a Foucauldian approach, I argue that the Christian pastoral model has a fundamental orientation towards individualism, addressing disability through frameworks of care and charity, rather than through a model of justice.
