Amazon Alive! A decade of discovery 1999-2009 The Amazon is the planet’s largest rainforest and river basin. It supports countless thousands of species, as well as 30 million people. © Brent Stirton / Getty Images / WWF-UK © Brent Stirton / Getty Images The Amazon is the largest rainforest on Earth. It’s famed for its unrivalled biological diversity, with wildlife that includes jaguars, river dolphins, manatees, giant otters, capybaras, harpy eagles, anacondas and piranhas. The many unique habitats in this globally significant region conceal a wealth of hidden species, which scientists continue to discover at an incredible rate. Between 1999 and 2009, at least 1,200 new species of plants and vertebrates have been discovered in the Amazon biome (see page 6 for a map showing the extent of the region that this spans). The new species include 637 plants, 257 fish, 216 amphibians, 55 reptiles, 16 birds and 39 mammals. In addition, thousands of new invertebrate species have been uncovered. Owing to the sheer number of the latter, these are not covered in detail by this report. This report has tried to be comprehensive in its listing of new plants and vertebrates described from the Amazon biome in the last decade. But for the largest groups of life on Earth, such as invertebrates, such lists do not exist – so the number of new species presented here is no doubt an underestimate. Apistogramma barlowi sp. n. is separated from all other Apistogramma species by the combination of over- proportionally large head and jaws, in males lyrate caudal-fi n horizontally divided in two colour zones, extended fi rst mem- branes of the dorsal fi n, a distinct breast band in basal part of vertical bar 2 and posterior lateral spot in females, missing caudal peduncle spot, and, unique in Apistogramma, facultative biparental mouth-breeding. Apistogramma barlowi sp. n. is a representative of the Apistogramma-cacatuoides-complex living in small brooks. -

Abstract A new species of Apistogramma, Apistogramma aguarico sp. n., is described from Ecuador, based on a total of 9 specimens collected from an oxbow lake (appr. 09°47′ S / 75°57′ W) connected to the Rio Lagartococha, an affluent of the Rio Aguarico, which is part of the Rio Napo system in the north east of Ecuador close to the border with Peru. Apistogramma aguarico sp. n. is distinguished from all other Apistogramma species by the combination (in adult males) of: truncate unmarked caudal fin with streamer-like extensions to both up- per and lower lobes in large individuals; four irregular abdominal lines formed by series of highly variable spots; serrate dorsal fin with membranes clearly prolonged past tips of spines; and ivory spot surrounding and including pectoral-fin base. The species is thought to be a representative of the Apistogramma eunotus complex within the Apistogramma regani lineage. -

The ray-finned fishes are a highly diverse group of vertebrates. Yet, our understanding of diversification in this group is incomplete, and the role of body size in creating this diversity is largely unknown. I examined body size in Neotropical cichlids (Cichlinae) to elucidate the large- and small-scale factors affecting body size diversity and distribution, and how body size shapes species, morphological, and ecological diversity in fishes. Characterization of body size distributions across the phylogeny of Neotropical cichlids revealed considerable overlap in body size, particularly in intermediate-sized fishes, with few, species-poor lineages exhibiting extreme body size. Three potential peaks of adaptive evolution in body size were identified within Cichlinae. I found freshwater fishes globally tend to be smaller and their distributions more diverse and right-skewed than marine counterparts, irrespective of taxonomy and clade age, with a strengthening of these trends in riverine systems. Comparisons of Neotropical cichlid body size diversity and distribution to this broader context shows that body size patterns are largely abnormal compared to most freshwater fishes, particularly those of the Neotropics. -

The species is a moderately large (males up to 49 mm, females to 38 mm SL), high-backed, laterally compressed, and only slightly elongated Apistogramma species.
