SECOND READING, Romans 4:13 - 5:2 For the promise that he would inherit the world did not come to Abraham or to his descendants through the law but through the righteousness of faith. If it is the adherents of the law who are to be the heirs, faith is null and the promise is void. For the law brings wrath; but where there is no law, neither is there violation. For this reason it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his descendants, not only to the adherents of the law but also to those who share the faith of Abraham (for he is the father of all of us, as it is written, “I have made you the father of many nations”) — in the presence of the God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist. Hoping against From the “” (1958) hope, he believed that he would become “the father of many nations,” according to what was said, “So numerous shall your descendants be.” He did not weaken in faith when he considered his own body, which was already as good as dead (for he was about a hundred years old), or when he considered the barrenness of Sarah’s womb. No distrust made him waver concerning the promise of God, but he grew strong in his faith as he gave glory to God, being fully convinced that God was able to do what he had promised. Therefore his faith “was reckoned to him as righteousness.” Now the words, “it was reckoned to him,” were *GOSPEL, Mark 8:31-38 *HYMN, “How Firm a Foundation” LBW Hymn 507 P The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the eighth chapter. 1. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord; Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, Born of the Virgin Mary; Suffered under Pontius Pilate, Was crucified, dead and buried. He descended into hell. OFFERING OF OURSELVES AND OUR GIFTS TO GOD We are not passing the offering plates during worship for health reasons. Offerings may be left in the offering plate on the table near the entrance to the sanctuary at any time during the week. *LORD’S PRAYER LBW Page 91 COMMUNION Please be mindful of social distancing recommendations as you come to receive Holy Communion — leaving significant distance between yourself and those who are not a part of your immediate family. Please come down the center aisle in a single line to receive the Body of Christ and then turn to the right to receive the Blood of Christ. After receiving the Blood of Christ, please leave the empty cup in the basket near the pillar.

During the distribution of Communion, the congregation sings: This hymn is by (1485-1550), a monk who became a part of the “Lamb of God Most Holy” Reformation. This translation by Arthur T. Russell was included in “The Lutheran Hymnary” (1913), “The Concordia Hymnal” (1932), and the “Service Book and “According to Thy Gracious Word” Hymnal” (1958). A newer translation appears as Hymn 111 in the “Lutheran Book “O Jesus, Blessed Lord, To Thee” of Worship” (1978). This hymn was included in the “The Lutheran Hymnary” (1913), “The Concordia Hymnal” (1932) and the “Service Book and Hymnal” (1958).

This hymn text by great Danish Thomas Kingo (1634-1703) was included in the “The Lutheran Hymnary” (1913), “The Concordia Hymnal” (1932), the “Service Book and Hymnal” (1958) and the “” (1978). Each of those hymnals uses a different tune for this hymn. “The Lutheran Hymnary” used the tune “Old Hundredth” which we associate with “Praise God, from Whom All Blessings Flow” and several other hymns. “The Concordia Hymnal” (reprinted above) used the tune “From Heaven Above,” that used for his great Christmas hymn. *COMMUNION BLESSING *BENEDICTION P Our crucified and risen Lord, Jesus Christ, who now hath bestowed upon you His holy Body and Blood, whereby He hath made full satisfaction for all your sins, strengthen and preserve you in the true faith unto everlasting life.
