Athens Journal of History - Volume 1, Issue 3 – Pages 195-204 Traffic Connectivity in Croatia in the Past: The Dubrovnik Region Case By Marija Benić Penava This paper analyses the development of traffic routes in the far south of Croatia during the 19th and 20th century. Poor traffic connectivity was the consequence of traffic policy which was subordinated to the interests of Vienna in the Austro- Hungarian Monarchy, and after World War I, to Belgrade. Since the Dubrovnik region was oriented towards the sea, and since traditionally it had strong entrepreneurship and sea traffic that enabled great economic prosperity of Dubrovnik in the past centuries. Ships flying the flag of Sveti Vlaho (Saint Blaise, the patron saint of the city) were present in the Mediterranean and the world’s oceans, yet the service industry which Dubrovnik provided was completed by tourism only in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. The perception of Dubrovnik as a world tourist destination was established in the first half of the 20th century and that could only be maintained by quality traffic routes. Therefore it was extremely important for the prosperity of the far south of Croatia to have and retain the best connectivity by railway as well as sea, land and air traffic. Introduction The transition from the eighteenth to the nineteenth century was a period of great economic change in Europe. The discovery of the Watt’s steam engine (1764) enabled mechanical transport, which neither the working animals nor the natural power, on which transportation was dependent previously, could not contest. The steam engine passed the milestone in the field of transport connection. -

Jankovská Department of Forest Protection and Game Management, Faculty of Forestry and Wood Technology, Mendel University in Brno, Brno, Czech Republic ABSTraCT: Forest fires under conditions of the Czech Republic are evaluated from the aspect of their frequency of occurrence in 1992–2004 at a level of particular years, seasons, days and daytime, and causes of their origin. They are confronted with a situation in the CR in 1974–1983. Effects of climatic conditions are a limiting factor not only for the frequency of their origin but also for the size of the burnt area. Spring (April) and summer (August) culminations were balanced. The burnt area of the best part of forest fires (88.9%) was < 1 ha. The increased frequency of forest fires was noted in afternoon hours and during weekends. Areas threatened by fires are characterized by the increased visit number. In the spectrum of causes, a dominant position is taken up by fire raising, smoking and management in the forest. Railway operation and lightning represent minority causes of the origin of forest fires. In the course of the year, the structure of forest fire origin changes depending on activities in the forest and visit number. We have shown such temporal changes in two severely modified reaches of the gravel-bed river Sava, the largest river in Slovenia (11,735 km2). The Ljubljanska Sava has significantly changed since the 19th century until today and this is largely due to long-term regulation of its channel, and later due to construction of hydroelectric power stations upstream of this section. The Lower Sava River, downstream of the confluence with the Savinja River, is severely modified due to regulation works and in the last years due to hydro power plants, in the reach at the Nuclear Power Plant Krško also due to the Krško weir. This study contributes to the understanding of fluvial processes when assessing the Sava River sediment budget, especially at the cross section with the Republic of Croatia. -

Printed in Sweden by ESSELTE AB STOCKHOLM Foreword Forest Economy in the U.S.S.R. is a special study of the forestry sector of the Soviet economy. As such it makes a further contribution to the studies undertaken in recent years to elucidate the means and ends in Soviet planning; also it attempts to assess the competitive potentialities of the U.S.S.R. in international trade. Soviet studies now command a very great interest and are being undertaken at some twenty universities and research institutes mainly in the United States, the United Kingdoin and the German Federal Republic. However, it would seem that the study of the development of the forestry sector has riot received the detailed attention given to other fields. In any case, there have not been any analytical studies published to date elucidating fully the connection between forestry and the forest industries and the integration of both in the economy as a whole. Studies of specific sections have appeared from time to time, but I have no knowledge of any previous study which gives a complete picture of the Soviet forest economy and which could faci- litate the marketing policies of the western world, being undertaken at any university or college. -
