Georges Pompidou PLACE MARGUERITE DE NAVARRE ASCENSEUR RUE DE LA FERRONNERIE Rue du Louvre du Rue Rue de Rivoli Point central du réseau de transport francilien, le pôle RER Châtelet-Les Halles appelle le constat suivant : • des accès RER peu visibles depuis la surface, • des espaces parfois saturés, au niveau des accès et des zones de correspondance entre RER et métro, • des espaces voyageurs vieillissants, La Seine • une signalétique complexe et foisonnante, VUE AÉRIENNE DU QUARTIER DES HALLES. • un accès diffi cile pour les personnes à mobilité réduite. Un aménagement intégré au projet urbain, porté par la Ville de Paris. UN NOUVEAU MAIL POUR DESSERVIR LE NIVEAU -3 DU FORUM DES HAllES Depuis le nouvel accès Place Marguerite de Navarre, un mail au niveau -3 permettra de rejoindre le Forum des Halles.     La Conciergerie This is ancient royal palace, built by Philippe the Fair (1284-1314). It is a place of imprisonment, torture, and death. Its gothic halls date from the Middle Ages. During the Revolution, it became a prison for thousands of arrested and condemned people. During the Reign of Terror, nearly 3 000 people left from here to meet their death on the Guillotine. See if you can track down the lists of their names. Marie Antoinette, Louis XVI and their children were imprisoned here, and the King and Queen left from here to be beheaded. The Revolutionary Tribunal kept court here. In the cells, prisoners were housed according to their means. The “pailleux” were the most numerous and slept on “paille” or straw in “La Rue de Paris” as they could not afford to bribe the guards for better accommodation. The “pistolés" were those who could pay “un pistol” (the name of a coin) and they could share a bed. There were the privileged who could afford their own private cell. You can also visit the women’s courtyard and the dungeon occupied by Marie Antoinette which is now a chapel dedicated to her memory. Pont Neuf the « new bridge » is in fact, the oldest bridge in Paris, so called because in 1578 it was the newest, and the only, stone bridge across the river. The contemporary Parisians liked their bridge because it was innovative: there were no houses built on it, so you could admire the views over the river and the Louvre; it was large, and its passing bays made it even larger; there were footpaths to protect pedestrians from mud and people on horseback.

Copyright: Rehs Galleries, Inc., New York City, 2008 The Sites of Paris - Yesterday and Today Featuring Paintings by EDOUARD LÉON CORTÈS (1882-1969) Paris has been a cultural center for hundreds of years, as well as a world capital for fashion, food, art, and literature. The many monuments built throughout the centuries have documented its illustrious history. Countless artists have celebrated Paris by illustrating its history through their paintings; one such artist was EDOUARD-LÉON CORTÈS (1882-1969). It was at the turn of the century, c.1900, that he began painting scenes that he would become most famous for – Paris’ streets and monuments. One of the more prolific artists of his time, Cortès found his niche and stayed with it. His views of Paris are among the most telling and beautiful of this genre; capturing the city during all its seasons for almost 70 years. The attention and great interest surrounding Cortès’ paintings and the city of Paris, has inspired us to create an ‘historical’ virtual tour and exhibition of the streets and monuments once painted by him. Included are paintings by Cortès that depict the Paris of old and photographs taken by Lynsi Spaulding* during the summer of 2005. We trust you find this exhibition not only enjoyable, but educational. *Lynsi Spaulding completed her MA degree in art history in 2006.

You may have already earned the Paris Worlds to Explore Patch either by visiting Paris or by fulfilling the requirements through independent research online or in your local library. Now you can earn another patch by exploring the Paris underground. The Michelin Guide, a map of Paris, a Paris metro map and various websites will be very helpful to you as you earn this patch. Visit or learn about as many sites as you can and then answer the questionnaires. Keep a scrapbook of tickets, photos or sketches of anything you have visited during your research. And if you discover any other underground sites in Paris or the close suburbs, please give that information to your leader so that she can send it to the Paris Patch Coordinator. Minimum time to complete the patch if visiting Paris in person: 2-4 days Requirements: Visit or learn about at least one underground site from each part of the information section and follow the instructions to complete the Metro quizzes at the end.
