  • How to Make a Difference at a Planning Commission Or City Council Hearing
How to Make a Difference at a Planning Commission or City Council Hearing by Amanda Fritz, Portland Planning Commission member 1996 - 2003 1. Provide information, in plenty of time and in useful formats. 2. Be polite and respectful, both to the decision-makers and to any opponents. 3. Plan your testimony, and use your time wisely. 4. Say what you want the decision-makers to do, clearly and repeatedly, and why. 5. Know the rules, and quote them. 6. The Rule of Three - Tell them, tell them again, tell them what you told them. 7. Organize diverse participation with more than a single constituency. 8. Use Meeting Mechanics to your advantage. 9. Use Personal Contacts to your advantage. 10. Be gracious in victory and defeat - use either to prepare for Next Time. ****************************************************************************** * How to Make a Difference at a Planning Commission or City Council Hearing 1. Provide information, in plenty of time and in useful formats. Often, decision-makers don't know as much about the issue as you do. They have to vote on multiple issues, week after week. You care most about one item on their agenda, and can research it in far greater detail than they can. Your goal is to convince them your position has more support (factually and/or in citizen popularity) than the other side. • Present your position in several formats. Different people have different ways of processing information. So provide a one-page overview with bullets, for those who don't read much, followed by several pages with all the details you feel are important, for those who like to consider all the facts.

Are your memories true? John “Fig” Newton thinks much the same as you do. But in three separate episodes of his life, he comes to see things are a little more strange and less straightforward than everyone around him has been inured to the point of pretending they are; maybe it's all some kind of bizarre form of torture for someone with the misfortune of assuming they embody a real and actual person. Whatever the case, Fig is sure he can't trust that truth exists, and over the course of his many doomed relationships and professional foibles, he continually strives to find another like him—someone incandescent with rage, and preferably, as insane and beautiful as he. i Extracts “Whose blood do you still thirst for? But sacred philosophy will shackle your success, for whatsoever may be your momentary triumph or the disorder of this anarchy, you will never govern enlightened men.

  • Devotions 71-80
71 Scripture: Ephesians 4:25-32 Pastor Wayne Memory Verse: Psalm 127:1 Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain. Have you ever been to the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, California? Sarah Winchester, heir to the Winchester Rifle Company fortune, built the home in the late 1800’s. After the death of her husband and child she was told by a medium that she needed to build a house for all of the people that were killed by Winchester rifles. Construction on the house was continuous for 38 years 24 hours a day. There are roughly 161 rooms, including 40 bedrooms, 2 ballrooms (one completed and one unfinished) as well as 47 fireplaces, over 10,000 panes of glass, 17 chimneys (with evidence of two others), two basements and three elevators and 20,500 US gallons of paint! It is obvious that Sarah had some mental and emotional problems, but she did have a good idea for you and I to apply to our marriage: Never stop building! . The word edify (vs. 29) means “to build up”. It comes from two root words, both meaning house or home. We should never stop building our marriage. Keep working on it 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, every year until you die. Someone once said that buying a house is buying a never-ending project. There is always something to work on, something to fix, and new additions or changes to be made.
