Declared the World Year of Physics by the United Nations, the year provided a unique opportunity for the international physics community to reach out to the general public while celebrating the centennial of Einstein’s “miraculous year.” The year started with an international Launching Conference in Paris, France that brought together more than 500 students from around the world to interact with leading physicists. -

DUNITZ INUS CARL PAULING was born in Portland, Oregon, on LFebruary 28, 1901, and died at his ranch at Big Sur, California, on August 19, 1994. In 1922 he married Ava Helen Miller (died 1981), who bore him four children: Linus Carl, Peter Jeffress, Linda Helen (Kamb), and Edward Crellin. Pauling is widely considered the greatest chemist of this century. Most scientists create a niche for themselves, an area where they feel secure, but Pauling had an enormously wide range of scientific interests: quantum mechanics, crys- tallography, mineralogy, structural chemistry, anesthesia, immunology, medicine, evolution. In all these fields and especially in the border regions between them, he saw where the problems lay, and, backed by his speedy assimilation of the essential facts and by his prodigious memory, he made distinctive and decisive contributions. FALL 2014 Welcome from the Head Construction Begins on Greetings from the Department of Chemistry! This has been Science Learning Center another successful year for UGA Chemistry, and I am pleased to report more good news about our department, faculty and students. University enrollment continues to grow each year – this fall, the university enrolled 35,197 students. The increase in student numbers, particularly in the rapidly growing engineering program, has created significant extra demand for Chemistry courses. This growth in instructional demand will help us to make a case for the continued growth of our faculty numbers. As I have mentioned in the past, faculty recruiting is one of the most significant and satisfying parts of my job. Jon Amster In the last year, we were able to recruit a new organic faculty member. Prof. Eric Ferreira comes to us from Colorado State University, where he established a successful and well-funded research program in synthetic organic chemistry. Eric and four Rendering of the future Science Learning Center of his graduate students moved to Athens over the summer. While his laboratory renovations are taking place, his students are hard at work in temporary space, and his program has hit he long-awaited Science Learning Center (SLC) the ground running. History of Physics Newsletter Volume VII, No. 3, Aug. 1998 Forum Chair From the Editor Forum News APS & AIP News Book Review Reports Forum Chair Urges APS Centennial Participation The American Physical Society celebrates its 100th anniversary in Atlanta, Georgia, at an expanded six-day meeting from March 20-26, 1999, which will be jointly sponsored by the American Association of Physics Teachers. This will be the largest meeting of physicists ever held, and the APS Forum on the History of Physics will play a central role in making it a truly memorable event. The 20th century has been the Century of Physics. The startling discoveries of X-rays, radioactivity, and the electron at the end of the 19th century opened up vast new territories for exploration and analysis. Quantum theory and relativity theory, whose consequences are far from exhausted today, formed the bedrock for subsequent developments in atomic and molecular physics, nuclear and particle physics, solid state physics, and all other domains of physics, which shaped the world in which we live in times of both peace and war. A large historical wall chart exhibiting these developments, to which members of the Forum contributed their expertise, will be on display in Atlanta. Also on display will be the well-known Einstein exhibit prepared some years ago by the American Institute of Physics Center for History of Physics. Two program sessions arranged by the Forum at the Atlanta Centennial Meeting also will explore these historic 20th-century developments. The first, chaired by Ruth H. The POCC will control AMS-02 for its entire lifetime. Data-taking started soon after AMS-02 was installed on the ISS on 19 May, when the spectrometer began detecting cosmic rays at a rate of about 50 million a day. Becker Volker Lindenthal Monash U and U Warwick University of Munich Sharun Mukand Fabian Waldinger University of Warwick University of Munich March 2021 Abstract We study the role of professional networks in facilitating the escape of persecuted academics from Nazi Germany. From 1933, the Nazi regime started to dismiss academics of Jewish origin from their positions. The timing of dismissals created individual-level exogenous variation in the timing of emigration from Nazi Germany, allowing us to estimate the causal eect of networks for emigration decisions. Academics with ties to more colleagues who had emigrated in 1933 or 1934 (early émigrés) were more likely to emigrate. The early émigrés functioned as “bridging nodes” that helped other academics cross over to their destination. Furthermore, we provide some of the rst empirical evidence of decay in social ties over time. The strength of ties also decays across space, even within cities. The work was carried out in the dark, often to the accompaniment of Rutherford singing „Onward Christian Soldiers“. Rutherford had already proposed the neutron in 1920 in his Bakerian Lecture at the Royal Society. He talked about a “neutral doublet” (at that time considered a proton and electron) that could be difficult to detect and move easily through matter. Curie & Joliot published (incorrectly) in Jan. 1932 the observation: 9Be + 4He → 12C + 1n I. Curie and F. Joliot, C. R. Acad. Sci. Paris 194, 273 (1932) When the radiation was passed through wax the ionisation increased! This increase was due to knock-on protons. To explain this the Curie’s suggested that the emission was of a 55 MeV γ ray, an energy much greater than anything yet seen!
