Celebrating our new Partnership with our sister Reform Synagogue Rosh Pina, Israel

The Galilee lies in northern Israel and is lush, green and mountainous, with forests, rivers and waterfalls. Unlike the center of the country it isn’t densely populated. Its citizens mostly live in small towns such as Safed, Tiberias and Nazareth as well as in kibbutzim and other villages, spread through the area and along Israel’s northern border.

Those living in kibbutzim and villages are often the descendants of early pioneers who arrived believing in a socialist way of life and saw little place for religion. For the most part today, kibbutzniks still lack religious inclina- tions, whereas Jews living in towns are more likely to lead a traditional way of life.

Against this background, we established the Reform Community of the Galilee eight years ago. Our aim was to provide a home for those families who do not feel connected to orthodox congregations, but who do feel con- nected to Jewish values, history and tradition. The group has, during these years, grown to be a warm supportive community that offers a Jewish way of life for its members. We work to bring Jewish education to our adult mem- bers as well as the children of the community in order to provide them with a Jewish basis. The community is the only one of its kind in the Northern Region and as such, our members feel they are pioneers of reform Judaism.

“To be honest, I had only seen a synagogue from the inside once in my life before we started the community here”, says Ma’ayan, one of our Israeli born members. “But I did feel a deep desire to engage with Jewish life. I felt there was more to life than our day to day worries and that in a country, that is more and more dominated by orthodox streams, there should be a place for Jews like me with a different opinion” “I wanted to be part of a kehila (community)”, tells Tali, the present chair, “but this had to be a kehila that allows for different ideas about religion, that allows me to ask open questions and find answers that lead to meaningful action. We call that pluralistic: There’s room for differences of opinion and beliefs.”

One of our founding members is Professor Anthony Luder, a pediatrician. “As secular immigrants from England I and my wife were looking for a non-orthodox way to better educate ourselves in the heritage and traditions of Ju- daism. The community enhanced our feeling of belonging to Israeli society and provided us with support during a difficult period.”

The community organizes regular services, especially kabalat Shabbat and we have a weekly Beth Midrash for our members. A very special feature of our community are the services we hold in ancient synagogues, which were built after the destruction of the Second Temple in . They were abandoned in the early Middle Ages and since then have been in ruins. Now, once again the sounds of Jewish life, music and prayer can be heard when we meet together on a Friday night in these old places of gathering.

Currently our base is a community center in an old winery, but we are in the early stages of establishing our own synagogue in the town of Rosh Pina.

Rabbi Tlalit Shavit was born in kibbutz Sedot Yam and during her life followed a path of learning and teaching. She developed a deep personal connection to Jewish spiritual life. We make efforts to reach out to other communities. Israel is absorbing large numbers of Ethiopian and Indi- an Jews. The process of integration in a modern western society is a slow and difficult one. We connect to these groups in our area and we have set up joint projects that can help strengthen these communities.

In the Galilee there is also a large Arab population. Our community supports a bilingual kindergarten for both Arab and Jewish children.

The Reform Community of the Galilee is seeking a sister community to consult when we need advice and to orga- nize activities together. We value relations between Israel and the diaspora. They are an important lifeline for us. During the last year meaningful contact has been established with Marc and Karen Rivo of Temple Beth Sholom. We are looking forward to joining hands and minds for the sake of a bright future for our two communities. HAKOL January 2019 Page 16 Page 17
