It examines how the overarching shared culture of the area could evolve under altering economic conditions, and how expressions of identity fluctuated through the cotton industry’s peak and decline. In effect, it explores how local populations could shape and be shaped by the cotton industry. By focusing on a compact area with diverse settlements, this thesis contributes to the wider understanding of what it was to live in an area dominated by a single industry. The complex legacy that the cotton industry’s decline has had is explored through a range of settlement types, from large town to small village.

The fields are almost clear of bushes and the sledging run that we enjoyed as youngsters shows beautifully in this colour shot. The challenge was to clear the path and get as far as Needham’s Dyke at the bottom. Great memories. The Cricket was sporting it’s ‘Ward’s Brewery’ livery in those days – probably about 30 years ago. Totley Residents Association Update We had our first meeting of 2013 on Wednesday, January 9th, and were joined by Councillors Colin Ross and Keith Hill. We would like to thank them for their continuing support. Roger Hart also attended and spoke to us about Traffic and Parking Issues; he informed us of The Streets Ahead Roadshow which was held at Abbeydale Sports Club on 15th January. A TRA Committee Member also attended. Our next Farmers’ Market/Spring Fair will take place on Sunday, 17th March 2013 from 11am – 3pm at Totley Rise. We have a very broad Database of Stallholders; however, we are always looking for new ones. Printed by the Supplies Section of the Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council (Administration Department) FOREWORD When walking or driving along Pemberton Road and Billinge Road, you are aware of the new housing estates and the rush of traffic. It is not difficult to imagine that the Parish of Highfield is one of the new suburbs created to absorb the workers of Lancashire and Merseyside. The truth is very different as you will discover in the pages of this book. The history of this area can be traced back to the Domesday Book of 1086 A. D. and by far the most historic building is Winstanley Hall. As a legal parish we can only go back to 1910, but as a church we go back to 1867 when the Pemberton Colliery Church School was built. The name of Pemberton Colliery gives us a clue to the origin of a church on this site. The link between the Blundell family and the Church has given to this parish the schools, the cricket Field, the graveyard and the vicarage. The present church, completed in 1894, was the gift of Col. Blundell in memory of his wife, Lady Blundell. The Blundell family were generous benefactors to the parish. Although the physical area referred to in this book is that of the parish of St Matthew, this is the history not just of a church, but of a whole community.

Introduction A visitor to any large technical library in the heart of the textile industries, on discovering the collection of textile books in stock, would be astonished to realise how small a space they occupy. The Textile Institute, for example, has most of the live books in English, but can accommodate them all in one small room. The Shirley Institute has for 24 years pursued the policy of acquiring every book on the cotton, rayon and silk industries that could be secured, whether old or new, and in whatever language, and yet the shelf space now occupied by books—apart from bound volumes of periodicals— is only some 160 feet.

    Identifying Woven Textiles 1750–1950 DATS in partnership with the V&A 1 Identifying Woven Textiles 1750–1950 This information pack has been produced to accompany two one-day workshops taught by Katy Wigley (Director, School of Textiles) and Mary Schoeser (Hon. V&A Senior Research Fellow), held at the V&A Clothworkers’ Centre on 19 April and 17 May 2018. The workshops are produced in collaboration between DATS and the V&A. The purpose of the workshops is to enable participants to improve the documentation and interpretation of collections and make them accessible to the widest audience. Participants will have the chance to study objects at first hand to help increase their confidence in identifying woven textile materials and techniques. This information pack is intended as a means of sharing the knowledge communicated in the workshops with colleagues and the wider public and is also intended as a stand-alone guide for basic weave identification.
