    MR NIK GOWING Main Presenter BBC World, British Broadcasting Corporation, United Kingdom Since February 1996, Nik Gowing has been the main presenter on BBC World News, the BBC’s 24-hour international television news and information channel. He also fronts the channel’s flagship hour-long news programme World News Today. From 1996 to March 2000, Nik was principal anchor for weekday news programme The World Today, and its predecessor, NewsDesk. He was a founding presenter of Europe Direct and has been a guest anchor on both HARDtalk and Simpson’s World. He is also a regular moderator of the Sunday news analysis programme Dateline London. Nik has been a main anchor for much of BBC World News coverage of major international crises including Kosovo in 1999, and the Iraq war in 2003. Nik was on air for six hours shortly after the Twin Towers were hit in New York City on 11 September 2001 and fronted coverage of the unfolding drama of Diana, Princess of Wales’ accident and made the announcement of her death to a global audience estimated at half a billion. He also anchors special location coverage of major international events, and chairs World Debates at the World Economic Forum in Davos and the annual Nobel Awards in Stockholm. We are here to get the best out of the BBC for licence fee payers and one of the ways we do this is by carrying out an in-depth review of each of the BBC’s services at least once every five years. This review is looking at the BBC’s network news and current affairs output. The BBC’s journalistic output lies at the heart of its public service remit, and providing the ‘best journalism in the world’ is the foremost of the BBC’s five editorial priorities. Volume 12, Issue 1 May 2015 Infiltrating the space, hijacking the platform: Pussy Riot, Sochi protests, and media events Kenzie Burchell, University of Toronto, Canada Abstract: The contemporary reformulation of the media events framework often focuses on the transformative role of mobile, video and social networking technologies in a global context, eclipsing another fundamental dimension: the geographically-bounded space of the media event. This article examines the surveillance and control of the physical space by organizers of the media event in an effort to control the wider global narrative extending beyond it, in this case the narrative of the controversial 2014 Winter Olympic Games in Sochi, Russia. For activists and other actors excluded from contributing to this narrative, infiltration of the physical space represents a potential vehicle for mobilizing media attention and engaging audiences with an alternative interpretation of the spectacle. Key words: Media Events, Protest, Geography, Olympics, Russia, Pussy Riot, LGBT, Twitter Introduction The contemporary reformulation of the media events framework often focuses, justifiably, on the transformative role of mobile, video and social networking technologies. When concentrating on these new media practices and the related changes to audience engagement and broadcasting formats, however, a particular element of Dayan and Katz’ (1992) original media events framework is overlooked, if it is not eclipsed altogether: namely, the geographically-bounded space of the media event. This article examines the centrality of the physical space of the media event in controlling the wider performance of the mediated narrative, using as a case study the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games. For the event organizers, the physical space is of increasing importance, as control and surveillance of the space provides an extended and militarized media infrastructure for constructing and protecting the global narrative extending beyond the event and the success of the event itself.

    NEW RESEARCH REVEALS THAT 7 OUT OF 10 PEOPLE ARE MORE CONCERNED ABOUT WORLD EVENTS THAN EVER BEFORE Study by BBC World News also shows that almost two thirds of people feel that news from other parts of the world is more relevant to them now than in the past Terrorism, conflict, health and the environment are biggest issues but the global economy is also important to Australians Over half discuss international news with friends and family 38% have turned to social media to read about news stories Sydney, June 9th. BBC World News today announced the findings of a new global survey* into changing attitudes towards international affairs. The study showed that an average 69% of people are more concerned about world events now than they have ever been before. 73% of Australians cited terrorism as a global news story they are currently most concerned about, followed by war/conflict (61%) and the global economy (51%). Globally, the main areas of concern were terrorism (70%), war/conflict (59%), health (55%) and the environment (52%). Corruption was cited as the biggest issue in South Africa (65%), health was number one in Hong Kong (71%) and war/conflict came first in Germany (73%). Globally, nearly two thirds of respondents (64%) said that news stories from other parts of the world felt more relevant to them than they had in the past and in Australia 73% of respondents were more concerned about global issues than five years ago. The study revealed that Australians feel that global news plays an important role in making them feel informed about what’s going on in the world (72%) and understanding it (60%).

    A Comparative Study of Television Coverage of the 2014 Hong Kong Protests on Global Media BBC World News and CCTV News Tianzi Wang Master Thesis Media and Communication Studies Supervisor: Prof. Alexa Robertson, Hlazo Mkandawire Department of Journalism Media and Communication (JMK) Stockholm University Submission Date: May 2015 ABSTRACT In a globalizing world, different media representations have been witnessed from various global newsrooms, particularly with reference to issues relating to politics such as war and protest. This study focuses on cross-cultural media representations of the 2014 Hong Kong Protests on two leading global media: BBC World News based in the United Kingdom and CCTV News based in China. Drawing from a comparative perspective of the traditional and new global powers, this research sheds more light on representation of protest by global media. By using a combination method of quantitative content analysis and qualitative framing analysis, two television flagship news programs broadcast on BBC World News and CCTV News in the two weeks following the 2014 Hong Kong Protests (i.e. from 26th September to 9th October 2014) have been analyzed to find out similarities and differences between their representations. The results show that there is a significant difference in the way the 2014 Hong Kong Protests were portrayed by the two global media. The BBC World News frames the protest as a democracy movement driven by students against the government for the election issue; while CCTV News claims the protest is illegal, and argues more about the negative economic consequences of the protest by quoting much from local retailers and general publics.
