Wee Choo Keong Witnessed Signing of SD Malaysiakini.Com October 12, 2010 PKR duo: Wee Choo Keong witnessed signing of SD Malaysiakini.com October 12, 2010 PKR turncoat and current independent MP Wee Choo Keong has been named as witness to the statutory declaration signed by party de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim's former aide, Rahimi Osman. The two PKR lawyers Rahimi accused of "coercing" him into signing the SD - party information chief Latheefa Koya and Kedah Youth chief Saiful Izham Ramli ( right ) - said the contentious SD was signed in front of Wee, then the PKR Wangsa Maju MP. "Rahimi signed the first statutory declaration on June 29, 2008, at the Quality Hotel in Shah Alam. He signed it voluntarily in front of lawyer, Member of Parliament and Commissioner of Oaths Wee Choo Keong. "The allegation that we 'confined' him in Quality Hotel is ludicrous and totally untrue. He was there on his own free will at all times and volunteering information to assist us with Anwar's case," Latheefa said in a statement given to the police. Before sending a copy of her statement to reporters as well, she and Saiful Izham were this morning questioned by the police for close to an hour at the Commercial Crimes Investigation Department in Kuala Lumpur. Three years' jail if found guilty They were also accompanied by their respective lawyers, N Surendran and Rashid Ismail. They were questioned under Section 199 of the Penal Code for allegedly making a false statement in any declaration receivable by law as evidence. If found guilty, they face a jail term of up to three years and a fine. Rahimi ( left ) gave his statement to the police on Friday. In his explosive revelation on Oct 6, Rahimi had claimed that he was forced into signing two SDs in 2008, implicating Prime Minister Najib Razak and his wife Rosmah Mansor in Anwar's current sodomy trial. He said both Latheefa and Saiful Izham had "detained" him at a hotel for several days after that. Copyright © 1999-2007 Mkini Dotcom Sdn. Bhd. Source : http://www.malaysiakini.com/news/ 145084 .

  • 519 Straight Fights (HL) (NST 21/11/1999)
21/11/1999 519 straight fights (HL) Joceline Tan; Sarban Singh KUALA LUMPUR, Sat. - The Barisan Nasional and the Opposition will face off in 192 parliamentary and 393 State constituencies in one of the most hotly-contested general elections since Independence. When nominations closed today, the two remaining seats - one for Parliament and the other for the Johor State Assembly - were won unopposed by the BN. The winners were incumbent Douglas Ugah Anak Embas for Betong in Sarawak, and Yap Chik Dong for the Tangkak State seat in Johor. Most of the constituencies - 152 parliamentary and 367 State - will see straight fights between candidates from the BN and the Alternative Front - a loose coalition of Pas, Parti Keadilan Nasional, DAP and PRM. Altogether 425 candidates will be vying for parliamentary seats and 811 for State seats come polling day on Nov 29. The scene at many nomination centres took on a festive air when candidates showed up with supporters bearing flags and banners. Although there was much competitive shouting and cheering, no untoward incidents were reported. The Election Commission also lived up to its promise to be liberal about technicalities because although scores of objections were filed, there were only four disqualifications including that of Malaysian Democratic Party secretary-general Wee Choo Keong in the Bukit Bintang parliamentary seat. Prime Minister and BN chairman Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad arrived to file his nomination papers at the Kubang Pasu district office at about 9.20am to cries of "Hidup Mahathir!" Dr Mahathir, who has held Kubang Pasu since 1974, was accompanied by BN State candidates Barishah Saad (Tunjang), Prof Othman Ishak (Jitra) and about 5,000 supporters.

Mixed responses to Federal Territory retreat Malaysiakini.com Apr 17, 2008 Soon Li Tsin The Pakatan Rakyat parliamentarians offered mixed responses when asked for their views on the Federal Territory roundtable discussion retreat which began in Kuala Lumpur today. MCPX federal territory round table retrieat zulhasnan rafiqueFederal Territories Minister Zulhasnan Rafique in his opening speech said the closed-door retreat at Istana Hotel seeks to obtain views and feedback from parliamentarians, NGOs, resident associations and interested parties in a move to enhance the administration of the ministry. The first retreat held at the Cyberview Lodge and Spa, Putrajaya, last November was attended by 50 NGOs and 29 government agency representatives. Each parliamentarian will be given 20 minutes to talk, followed by a 30 minute question and answer session. Several group discussions will be held tomorrow on the final day of the retreat. Malaysiakini approached several MPs that were present to comment on the FT ministry-oganised retreat. Here are their views: Tian Chua (PKR -Batu) tian chua 02Well, it’s just starting, we’ll see. We hope to see greater transparency in the operations of the KL and FT authority. We also hope that it’s not going to be a PR (public relations) exercise but a genuine sense of responsibility-sharing in planning and developing this area. I hope that our intervention as MPs could effectively bring about the long overdue change in KL administration. (The issues that I will be raising) are very much the old songs we’ve been singing (smiles) which the minister himself picked it up (in his speech).

  • PKR Prepares the Ground in Tipping Rafizi for Pandan Malaysiakini.Com June 18, 2012 by Terence Netto
PKR prepares the ground in tipping Rafizi for Pandan MalaysiaKini.com June 18, 2012 By Terence Netto COMMENT The disclosure - said to be inadvertent - that PKR strategic director Rafizi Ramli is certain to be its candidate for the parliamentary seat of Pandan in Kuala Lumpur has had supporters hoping that as Pandan goes, so will the rest of the party. This is so because, in happy contrast with the prelude to the last general election, there is now in PKR no dearth of candidates vying for selection. Before the last general election in March 2008, party adviser Anwar Ibrahim had virtually to go around begging supporters to contest. The hammering the opposition took at the 2004 general election at the hands of Umno-BN, under the ‘new broom' leadership of Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, had a shriveling effect on the pool of available candidates for PKR. Sympathisers and supporters the party had aplenty. However, from among this crowd those willing to place their fealty on the line were but a few. The tsunami of support for the opposition at the 2008 polls has changed all that, particularly for PKR, the newest of the opposition triad whose other components are PAS and DAP. These days PKR is rife with choice, a situation which cannot exactly be described as an embarrassment of riches but things are pretty close to that. This situation has its downside: in some seats there are as many as four aspirants pushing their claims. In at least one constituency there are two ‘bilik gerakan' (operations centre) up and running, one for each probable.

Parliament turns into a 'war zone' Malaysiakini.com Jul 14, 2008 The opposition today accused the government of turning Parliament into a "war zone" as armed police sealed off the building amid fears of a protest. MCPX parliament building police blockade 140708 07Roads leading to parliament, which are important entry points to Kuala Lumpur, were closed down by 1,600 heavily armed police, causing massive traffic jams that left motorists fuming over the move. The security measures were put in place as the opposition attempted to hold a parliamentary debate on the shortcomings of beleaguered Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, who is fending off calls to resign. As expected, the parliament's speaker rejected the motion, triggering a walkout of lawmakers from the three-party opposition alliance led by Anwar Ibrahim. opposition pakatan rakyat parliament walkout pc 140708 07"Today is a day we have never seen before in the history of the country, where parliament has become a war zone," said Anwar's wife, Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who leads the PKR. Anwar was banned from coming to parliament by a court order. The opposition has consistently denied it was planning a protest and there were no signs of gatherings at Parliament. Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng from DAP condemned the decision to roll out police and barbed-wire barricades. parliament building police blockade 140708 16"Why do we put Parliament under siege, turning Parliament into a police state? It is unnecessary and the government is trying to instil fear using the police," he told reporters. "Parliament should be open to the public to participate so they can listen to the debates and see how participatory democracy works.
