A REVIEW OF NATURAL CO2 OCCURRENCES AND RELEASES AND THEIR RELEVANCE TO CO2 STORAGE Background to the Study The security of storage of CO2 in geological reservoirs is a key issue that has been, and will be increasingly, discussed as the technology moves closer to wide scale deployment. There are a number of ways through which the security of storage can be demonstrated. These include: • Development of standards and best practise guidelines that ensure that storage reservoirs are carefully selected and the environmental risks are minimised, • Development of risk assessment procedures that demonstrate long term safe storage is a realistic prospect, • Monitoring of injection projects to confirm the containment of injected CO2. All these activities are now underway in a number of countries worldwide. However it may be several more years before a credible data base is established that will allow the issue of security of storage to be resolved to everybody’s satisfaction. In the intervening period, this issue will represent a potential barrier to the introduction of CO2 storage technology. In that interim period, groups not necessarily supportive of geological storage of CO2, may emphasise the issue of storage security, through reference to natural geological events. In particular, natural events such as Lake Nyos in Cameroon that have resulted in deaths due to an uncontrolled CO2 release may well be those that are focused upon in any debate.

Whether it was coverage of his speech to an oil fo- rum, him answering questions at an OPEC press conference, or simply his comments on the state of the international oil Commentary market, the publication and its readership benefited im- mensely from his views, which covered a wealth of inter- esting and topical subjects. Since his death, the tributes, led by President Jonathan, have been pouring in. There are too many to mention here, but all point to a brilliant and well-liked man who will be sorely missed. Introduction Anthropogenic emissions of greenhouse gasses like CO2 are raising global temperatures ​ ​ at an unprecedented rate. According to the most recent United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change report, global emissions have caused ~1°C global warming above pre-industrial levels, with impacts such as rising sea level and changing weather patterns (IPCC 2018). The IPCC states that the current rate of emissions will lead to global warming of 1.5°C sometime between 2030 to 2052, and that temperature will continue to rise above that if emissions are not halted. They state that impacts of global warming, such as drought or extreme precipitation, will increase with a 1.5°C temperature increase. However, these effects will be less than the impacts of global temperature increase of beyond 2°C. The IPCC also projects that global sea level rise will be 0.1 m lower at 1.5°C warming than at 2°C warming, exposing 10 million fewer people to risks related to sea level rise.

Owoseni Department of Philosophy, University of Ibadan, University of Ibadan Post Office, Nigeria Abstract The observation by scholars that the typical African people are often overtly religious in matters of interpreting reality demands a critical outlook with allusion to apt consideration of phenomena in relevant locale within the African space. The phenomenon of water has received copious attention worldwide and the need to consider this within an African nay Yoruba worldview is timely. The Yoruba of Southwestern Nigeria are wont to express that ‘water is the converge of good health, no one can despise it’ – omi labuwe, omi labumi, eni kan kii ba omi s’oota . This expression among other narratives convey a symbolic and paradoxical representation of water, which depicts the metaphysical dialectics of water in Yoruba belief. Basically, it renders the phenomenon of water as an entity that has the potency to vitalize and disrupt life-forms, given the beliefs regarding its place in relationship with certain animals like buffalo, fish and some endangered species, plants, trees as well as humans. Resultant impediments that fraught environmental order such as flood, draught and water borne diseases or outbreak in this regard are often linked to these beliefs. This is believed to be due to negating demands of the essential place of water by aberrant practices/acts, abuse, negligence of venerating ancestral grooves, goddesses or spirit. In lieu of this, this discourse adopts a hermeneutic analysis of the phenomenon and argues that the understanding of water in indigenous Yoruba belief is underscored by the dialectics of positive and negative causes that also impact the course of environmental sustainability.

This study takes a closer look at the Osun drainage basin with a view to updating the existing records, estimate the morphometric features and make hydrological inferences. The data used in this study include a 30m resolution Digital Elevation Model (DEM) acquired from the United State Geological Survey (USGS), geology map of Nigeria acquired from Nigeria Geological Survey Agency (NGSA), Harmonized World Soil Database (HWSD) prepared by the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), and the 1991 locality population data of Nigeria acquired from National Population Commission (NPC). Remote sensing and GIS techniques were adopted in the analysis of the data using ArcGIS 10.2. The acquired DEM was used to delineate Osun drainage basin and 21 morphometric parameters were estimated. The results revealed that Osun drainage basin is a 4th order drainage basin, with an area of 9926.22km 2 , and a length of 213.08km. The area covered by the two geology types and the four soil types were quantified and it revealed that 93.28% of the basin is underlain by the Basement Complex rocks, while 50.89% of the basin is covered by sandy clay loam soil.

    COUNTRY REPORT Nigeria At a glance: 2001-02 OVERVIEW President Obasanjo’s administration faces the difficult task of uniting a nation divided by regional rivalries, ethnic conflicts and religious tension. Sectarian political campaigning in the run-up to elections in 2003 is likely to accentuate these divisions and further undermine the ability of the state to take decisive steps to tackle the myriad problems arresting national progress, including corruption, mismanagement and decaying infrastructure. The economy will continue to be propelled by the oil sector: strong world oil prices will keep real GDP growth strong. However, the non-oil sector of the economy will remain stagnant in the absence of much-needed reforms. The EIU forecasts that the rate of real GDP growth will rise from 2.8% in 2000 to 3.5% in 2001 and 3.9% in 2002. Although inflation will rise over the outlook period, it will not accelerate out of control. With oil prices buoyant in 2001-02, the current account will remain in surplus. Key changes from last month Political outlook • On January 24th the president sacked his cabinet. At the end of January a new one had not been appointed. Although it will contain new faces it is unlikely to signal a change in policy. Latest reports indicate that at least ten existing ministers will be dropped. Economic policy outlook • Economic policy is expected to be unchanged. However, there are signs of increasing strains with the IMF, which could affect the debt rescheduling deal reached with the Paris Club in December 2000. Economic forecast • The EIU has revised our oil forecasts.
