CITY OF SASKATOON Saskatoon, also known as the “Hub City” refers to its favourable central location in the province of Saskatchewan. The 2016 Statistics Canada Census reported a total of 295,095 people, including the bedroom communities, making it Saskatchewan’s largest city. The City of Saskatoon website is reporting a number of 265,300 residents in the City of Saskatoon alone in 2016. Saskatoon has a largely diversified economy with a wide range of products and services in demand from around the world. With steadily growing infrastructure, natural resources, research and development, and a well-educated workforce it is seen as one Canada’s fastest growing cities according to Statistics Canada. CITY MAP Real Estate Market Saskatoon experienced prominent real estate growth starting in 2007 and saw a growing population, which expanded the suburban areas to include Stonebridge, Willows, University Heights, Rosewood, Blairmore, Hampton Village, Evergreen and the extension of Parkridge. Additional suburban developments announced in 2014 include Kensington and Elk Point in the Blairmore subdivision; and Brighton, the first development in the Holmwood subdivision. One indicator of the prominent growth in Saskatoon is noted in the Multiple Listing Service, which revealed a 66% increase in the average single-family dwelling sale price from $233,399 in 2007 to $350,227 in 2016. The year 2016 saw a decrease in housing sale prices of $3,820 from $354,047 in 2015. The first portion of 2017 has seen a further decline with a drop from 2016 with an average sale price of $337,980. There were 3,719 single-detached dwelling and multifamily unit sales in 2016 compared to 3,959 resale transactions in 2015. -

1 Growing up Jewish on the Prairies: Rural Manitoba and Saskatchewan By Chana Thau, Winnipeg, MB, February 14, 2012 Introduction The Jewish population of Manitoba is located almost entirely in Winnipeg. Many Winnipeg Jews, especially younger ones, know nothing of the days when Jews lived on farms and small towns throughout the region. Yet a surprising number of Winnipeggers have roots outside of Winnipeg, in Manitoba and Saskatchewan towns. They remember their origins vividly and, for the most part, fondly. Jews began coming to Canada, to the Prairies, in the late 1800s. Farm colonies were established with the assistance of the Jewish Colonization Association (JCA). In Saskatchewan, there were settlements at Moosomin (New Jerusalem) and Wapella, and later at Sonnenfeld, Edenbridge and Hirsch, near Estevan. In Manitoba, there were colonies at Camper (New Hirsch) and Bender Hamlet, near Narcisse. The Russian immigrants came to escape persecution and pogroms in Tsarist Russia; others came to escape compulsory conscription, or poor economic or social conditions in their country of origin. Whether they had any experience with farming or not, they came ‐ in response to the government’s offers of free land and freedom in Canada, or to the encouragement of their relatives or friends who were already there. Jewish settlement in Canada was not undertaken in pursuit of ideological goals. The JCA assisted settlers because it believed that shifting the emphasis of Jewish life from trade to agriculture would reduce anti‐Semitism among gentiles. Imagine their dismay when they arrived and found heavily forested land that required clearing in order to build a primitive house and plant crops (Lehr 23). -

Five years ago we launched the first issue with a mandate to inform you about the successes, priorities, research, news and events of the College of Arts & Science. Later that year, we began work on another new magazine aimed at our alumni called DiversitA&S. We decided it was time we ask our readers what they thought about both magazines. With help from University Advancement, two surveys went out to Arts&Science and DiversitA&S readers in 2012. Your responses were both helpful and enlightening. We were happy to discover that most of you agree with this statement: “The maga- zine strengthens my connection to the College of Arts Science.” We learned that many of our alumni enjoy reading about the history and traditions of the college, would like to see more campus news and definitely disliked the magazine’s name, DiverisitA&S. We also found out that readers of Arts&Science would like to see more fea- tures on new initiatives, profiles on alumni and opinion pieces on “hot topics.” In response to this information, we have combined the two magazines into one, called Arts&Science. The magazine, which covers faculty, students, alumni and staff of the College of Arts & Science, will be pub- lished twice yearly. -

Construction and Post-Construction Deformation Analysis of an MSE Wall using Terrestrial Laser Scanning and Finite Element Modelling by Devon Joseph Adamson A Thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies of The University of Manitoba In partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Master of Science Department of Civil Engineering University of Manitoba Winnipeg, Manitoba Copyright © 2020 by Devon Joseph Adamson Abstract Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) is a new technology surveying tool that can collect highly accurate cartesian coordinates of data points surrounding the scanner in a 360° field of view. This technology can be useful in the field of monitoring heavy civil structures, in the case of this research, the settlement of bride interchange abutments. Two bridge abutments were monitored with TLS, designed with Cast-In-Place (CIP) belled piles and Mechanically-Stabilized Earth (MSE) retaining walls with a segmented precast concrete panel facing system. The foundation was further reinforced with vibration-compacted rockfill columns supporting the approach embankments, which increased the stiffness of the soil and acted as drains to dissipate pore water pressure. The wall facing panels had discernable edges that could easily be identified by the scanner, allowing for a total wall survey rather than the limited discrete location surveying used by traditional methods. Multiple scan surveys were taken along each wall face and were registered together to create a larger Project Point Cloud (PPC). Once PPCs were collected for successive survey dates, point clouds were aligned in the same coordinate system and relative movement was measured. These measurements were then compared against the surveying performed on site by the contractor to observe discrepancies in measured readings.
