October 30, 2020 Happy last school day of October. I want to personally thank each of you for all your support, encouragement, and partnership thus far. In some ways it feels as though we’ve just begun the school year and yet, in other ways, it feels like we started a lifetime ago. I know many families are feeling the same. The struggles and challenges are real and I want you to know that we empathize. I also want each of you to know that we are in this together. If you need support of any kind, please reach out. We are here for you and your child. Our counseling team is on standby for any need that arises, as are we as teachers, administrators, and support personnel. We care deeply about every single student and family we serve. At Leota, we are a family and we are honored that you are a part of our family. Monday begins second quarter. With it are many new things going on around campus. Below are just a few of them. Be sure to read the entire newsletter for important school- related information. A Thank You from the Family of Jonah Espinosa: As you know, we lost a beautiful soul with the tragic death of Jonah Espinosa. Jonah was a former student of Leota. His bright smile, laid back demeanor, and kind heart will never be forgotten. Despite their grief and sadness, Jonah's family wanted to express their deepest gratitude for all the love and support our Leota community has given them during this very difficult time. Thank you! Support for Basic Family Needs: We know that the current times we are living in are causing unforeseen financial stressors on many of our students and families. If your family needs help with any basic needs, please fill out the form on this link and we will reach out to you to see how we can help. Request for Assistance PTSA Fund Drive: Don’t forget to scroll down to see how you can participate in the joint PTSA/ASB Fund Drive. All funds go to support programs at Leota. Thank you for your support. Today (Oct. 30th) is End of First Quarter: First quarter ends today. Grades and 2nd quarter schedules can be viewed via StudentVue or ParentVue as well as in Schoology. Remember that all 6th graders in quarter electives will see a final grade for those quarter classes and will begin their 2nd quarter elective on Monday. Be watching for an email from 2nd quarter teachers if you have a class change. For all other classes, students will receive mid-term progress reports. Progress reports will be mailed home after teachers have finalized grades in mid-November. Daylight Savings Time Ends: Don’t forget to turn your clocks back one hour this weekend. Daylight Savings Time officially ends Sunday, November 1st at 2:00am. Second Quarter Materials/Textbooks: If your child missed the materials pick up this week, please call the main office to coordinate a time to pick them up. The main office number is 425-408-6501. Below are the teachers and classes for which new materials were distributed: • Mr. Adams: Period 1 Math 7, Period 4 Math 7, and Period 6 Challenge Math 7 • Ms. Duffy: All students who have Ms. Duffy for 6th grade AAP English and 7th grade AAP English • Mr. Keller: Period 4 English 7 • Ms. Kelly: Period 3 English 7 and Period 4 English 7 • Ms. Stevens (Kilgore): Periods 1, 2 and 3 AAP English 8 • Ms. Millers: Period 1 - 2nd quarter 6th grade art • Mrs. Poon: Period 1 Choir • A select group of four students and families were contacted directly by Ms. Anderson, our OT/PT to pick up some supplies. Hispanic Scholarship Fund: This is an exciting program for students and their parents to gain access to virtual HSF College Camp programs via Zoom. It’s free, bilingual, and designed for students in 6th-12th grades, and their families, to receive valuable information about how to prepare, plan, and pay for a college education. Space is limited, so if you are interested please click on the link above to register before sessions close. WEB on Wednesday, November 4th: This coming Wednesday (Nov. 4th) is our monthly WEB social for all 6th graders and WEB leaders during Club Time. Sixth graders will receive an email with the Zoom link so they can attend this event. These socials are always the highlight for students and staff, so please encourage your child to attend. It’s a great way to connect, have fun, and deepen friendships. All other students will participate in their Working Wednesday as normal. All students will check in with their 4th period teacher from 8:30-8:50 as usual. Attendance on all Wednesdays is required and will be taken either live during the 8:30 check-in or asynchronously by verifying each student’s submitted Working Wednesday plan, which they complete each Wednesday via Google Form. Students will complete their individualized learning plan with support from their teacher. The school day for students will end at 1:35. Wednesday, November 11th is Veteran’s Day: Due to Veteran’s Day being celebrated on the 11th, this will be a non-school day and students are not required to complete their usual Working Wednesday plan, nor check in with their 4th period class. This will NOT affect the schedule the other days of the week. I hope you have a safe and happy Halloween weekend. Warmly, Audee Gregor Principal Happy Friday to you! Paving the Way Together Annual Fund: 10/19 – 11/06 WHY are we raising funds? PTSA and ASB are active in very different ways this year, but are dedicated to making our student, teacher, and parent experiences the very best they can be. Especially in these unusual and difficult times, we want to provide impactful educational and community building programs to help our students and families thrive. Thus, we are kicking off our Annual Fund drive that will benefit both PTSA and ASB at Leota Middle School. This year we would like to continue offering grants for the classroom, library, special education, WEB Leaders, staff appreciation, Career Day, Science Olympiad Club, Math Olympiad Club, 8th Grade Party, and ASB programs. These only happen through amazing volunteers and donations from our community. We thank everyone for their generosity whether it is a donation, being a volunteer or an awesome community member. It is completely understandable if a donation is not possible at this time. We wish all our Leota families stay safe and healthy. WHY are PTSA and ASB combining forces? Because we want to make it clearer and easier than it has ever been while slashing the cost to raise funds by over 90%. How Can I participate? There are two ways to participate. Option 1 is able to accept membership + sponsorship + Corporate Matching + Donations through the www.leoatptsa.com website. For Option 2, a separate website has been set up on a platform called 99pledges that will accept donations and allow you to engage friends and family to participate. On Monday, October 19, each family that has not opted out of information sharing will have a link sent to them DID YOU KNOW CORPORATE MATCHING DOLLARS INCLUDES DONATIONS AND VOLUNTEER TIME?
