Abstract Title of Dissertation: INFLUENCES AND TRANSFORMATIONS: 19TH- CENTURY SOLO AND COLLABORATIVE PIANO REPERTOIRE Miori Sugiyama, Doctor of Musical Arts, 2012 Dissertation Directed by: Professor Rita Sloan School of Music, Piano Division This dissertation is an exploration of the inter-relationships of genres in the collaborative piano repertoire, particularly in music of the 19th century, an especially important period for collaborative piano repertoire. During this time, much of the repertoire gave equal importance to the piano in duo and ensemble repertoire. Starting with Schubert, and becoming more apparent with the development of the German lied, the piano became a more integral part of any composition, the piano part being no longer simplistic but rather a collaborative partner with its own voice. Mendelssohn transformed the genre of lieder by writing them, without their words, for solo piano. In addition to creating some of the greatest and most representative lieder in the Romantic period, composers such as Schumann, Brahms, and Strauss continued the evolution of the sonata by writing works that were more technically demanding on the performer, musically innovative, and structurally still evolving. In the case of Chopin who wrote mostly piano works, a major influence came from the world of opera, particularly the Bel Canto style. In exploring two specific genres, vocal and instrumental piano works by these composers; it is fascinating to see how one genre translates to another genre. This was especially true in the vocal and instrumental works by Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Chopin, and Strauss. All of these composers, with the exception of Chopin, contributed equally to both the song and sonata genres. -

Dann das Es. Und das Überich erst, lieber Himmel, da hat sich die Menschheit etwas eingebrockt, als sie alle Dämme brechen ließ und den Kaiser wie den Lieben Gott gute Männer sein ließen. Nichts klärt uns über die Befindlichkeit der Sigmund- Freud-Generation besser auf als die Kunst der Ära zwischen 1900 und 1933, ehe die Politik - wie zuvor schon in der sowjetischen Diktatur - auch in 9. Es gab 9. August 2006 SINKOTHEK mehr zwischen Schönberg und Lehar als unsere Schulweisheit sich träumen lässt. Erwin Schulhoff war ein Meister im Sammeln unterschiedlichster Elemente aus den Musterkatalogen des Im- wie des Expressionismus. Er hatte auch ein Herz für die heraufdämmernde Neue Sachlichkeit, ohne deshalb Allvater Wagner zu verleugnen. Seine "Flammen", exzellent instrumentiert mit allem Klingklang von Harfe, Glocke und Celesta, das jeglichen alterierten Nonenakkord wie ein Feuerwerk schillern und glitzern lässt, tönen mehr nach Schreker als nach Hindemith - auch wenn das einleitende Flötensolo beinahe den keusch-distanzierten Ton der "Cardillac"- Musik atmet. -

SCHREKER FRAZ Compositore tedesco (Monaco di Baviera 23 III 1878 - Berlino 21 III 1934) 1 Schreker studiò composizione a Vienna insieme a Robert Fuchs e Hermann Graedener e violino con Sigismund Bachrich e Joseh Rosé. Fondatore (1908), e più tardi anche direttore (1911) del coro filarmonico di Vienna, nel 1912 fu nominato professore di composizione all'Accademia di musica. Dal 1920 fu direttore della Musikhochschule a Berlino, e negli anni compresi tra il 1922 e il 1933 diresse una classe di composizione all'Accademia prussiana delle arti di Berlino. Schreker fu amico di Schonberg e di Berg ed ebbe fra i suoi rilievi Alois Haba ed Ernest Krenek e fu uno dei compositori più celebri del suo tempo. Per numero di rappresentazioni delle sue opere superò addirittura Richard Strauss. Nel 1933 il regime nazista lo privò di tutte le cariche. Schreker è stato il compositore più popolare di un'opera fortemente influenzata dalla psicanalisi e basata sul patetismo di soggetti da cui traspaiono conflitti sessuali carichi di implicazioni simboliche. The Order of Numbers in the Second Viennese School of Music
The order of numbers in the Second Viennese School of Music Carlota Sim˜oes Department of Mathematics University of Coimbra Portugal Mathematics and Music seem nowadays independent areas of knowledge. Nevertheless, strong connections exist between them since ancient times. Twentieth-century music is no exception, since in many aspects it admits an obvious mathematical formalization. In this article some twelve-tone music rules, as created by Schoenberg, are presented and translated into math- ematics. The representation obtained is used as a tool in the analysis of some compositions by Schoenberg, Berg, Webern (the Second Viennese School) and also by Milton Babbitt (a contemporary composer born in 1916). The Second Viennese School of Music The 12-tone music was condemned by the Nazis (and forbidden in the occupied Europe) because its author was a Jew; by the Stalinists for having a bourgeois cosmopolitan formalism; by the public for being different from everything else. Roland de Cand´e[2] Arnold Schoenberg (1874-1951) was born in Vienna, in a Jewish family. He lived several years in Vienna and in Berlin. In 1933, forced to leave the Academy of Arts of Berlin, he moved to Paris and short after to the United States. He lived in Los Angeles from 1934 until the end of his life. In 1923 Schoenberg presented the twelve-tone music together with a new composition method, also adopted by Alban Berg (1885-1935) and Anton Webern (1883-1945), his students since 1904. The three composers were so closely associated that they became known as the Second Viennese School of Music. -

Introduction to Focus 2020 by Joel Sachs The seed for this year’s Focus Festival was planted in December 2018 at a Juilliard doctoral recital by the Chilean violist Sergio Muñoz Leiva. I was especially struck by the sonata of Rebecca Clarke, an Anglo-American composer of the early 20th century who has been known largely by that one piece, now a staple of the viola repertory. Thinking about the challenges she faced in establishing her credibility as a professional composer, my mind went to a group of women in that period, roughly 1885 to 1930, who struggled to be accepted as professional composers rather than as professional performers writing as a secondary activity or as amateur composers. -

Study Guide: Graduate Placement Examination in Music History
GRADUATE PLACEMENT EXAMINATION IN MUSIC HISTORY STUDY GUIDE The Graduate Placement Examination in Music History is designed to ascertain whether incoming graduate students have a knowledge of music history commensurate with an undergraduate degree in music. It is typically offered prior to the first day of classes each semester. Students are asked to identify important historical figures, define important terms, compose a brief essay, and draw conclusions from a musical score. Some knowledge of musical traditions beyond the Western/European classical traditions, including topics such as “world music,” “folk music,” and “popular music,” is also expected. The ninety-minute examination comprises the following sections: 1. identification of composers and schools of composition (choose from a list provided during the exam); worth 25 points, allow approximately 20 minutes 2. identification of terms (choose from a list provided during the exam); worth 25 points, allow approximately 20 minutes 3. essay (choose a topic from a list provided during the exam); worth 30 points, allow approximately 30 minutes 4. score identification, including: historical period and approximate date of composition; genre, its important stylistic features, and how/where they can be seen in the piece; and the name of the likely composer; worth 20 points, allow approximately 20 minutes. This study guide provides lists, organized by historical era (with approximate dates), of major figures, genres, and terms from music history. They are not necessarily complete or comprehensive lists of items that will appear on the test. For further review, the faculty recommend consulting the textbook (and accompanying scores and recordings) used in the undergraduate core music history sequence in the Department of Music. -
