religions Article Spiritual Ecology: On the Way to Ecological Existentialism Sam Mickey Theology and Religious Studies, University of San Francisco, San Francisco, CA 94117, USA; [email protected] Received: 17 September 2020; Accepted: 29 October 2020; Published: 4 November 2020 Abstract: Spiritual ecology is closely related to inquiries into religion and ecology, religion and nature, and religious environmentalism. This article presents considerations of the unique possibilities afforded by the idea of spiritual ecology. On one hand, these possibilities include problematic tendencies in some strands of contemporary spirituality, including anti-intellectualism, a lack of sociopolitical engagement, and complicity in a sense of happiness that is captured by capitalist enclosures and consumerist desires. On the other hand, spiritual ecology promises to involve an existential commitment to solidarity with nonhumans, and it gestures toward ways of knowing and interacting that are more inclusive than what is typically conveyed by the term “religion.” Much work on spiritual ecology is broadly pluralistic, leaving open the question of how to discern the difference between better and worse forms of spiritual ecology. This article affirms that pluralism while also distinguishing between the anti-intellectual, individualistic, and capitalistic possibilities of spiritual ecology from varieties of spiritual ecology that are on the way to what can be described as ecological existentialism or coexistentialism. Further distribution or reproduction in any format is prohibited without the permission of the copyright holder. ii - ABSTRACT - Dada is often dismissed as an anti-art movement that engaged with a limited and merely destructive theoretical impetus. French Existentialism is often condemned for its perceived quietist implications. However, closer analysis reveals a preoccupation with philosophy in the former and with art in the latter. Neither was nonsensical or meaningless, but both reveal a rich individualist ethics aimed at the amelioration of the individual and society. It is through their combined analysis that we can view and productively utilise their alignment. Offering new critical aesthetic and philosophical approaches to Dada as a quintessential part of the European Avant-Garde, this thesis performs a reassessment of the movement as a form of (proto-)Existentialist philosophy. The thesis represents the first major comparative study of Dada and Existentialism, contributing a new perspective on Dada as a movement, a historical legacy, and a philosophical field of study. -

Running head: BRAINS, BELIEFS, AND EXISTENTIALISM Brains, Beliefs, and Existentialism: Philosophies and Treatments Pertaining to Three Approaches to Social Anxiety Disorder, and the Prospect of a New Mental Health Paradigm Jason Campbell Advised by Michael J. Crowley, Ph.D. Yale University April 20, 2018 BRAINS, BELIEFS, AND EXISTENTIALISM 1 Introduction This paper provides a brief overview of social anxiety disorder, and outlines three approaches discernible in the scientific literature to understanding the etiology and maintenance of social anxiety disorder. The connection of each of these approaches to a certain type of treatment is discussed, as well the philosophical assumptions supporting each of these approaches. These three approaches are then comparatively assessed in terms of their suitability for explaining the etiology and maintenance of social anxiety disorder, with an emphasis on the relationship between dynamics at distinct levels of abstraction. The shortcomings of the current DSM paradigm of mental illness are explored, and how improvements thereof may be related to the development of a more robust understanding of the mechanisms of mindfulness-based interventions. This paper concludes with a brief discussion of the potential value of existential philosophy in grounding and guiding the project of developing a new conceptual framework for mental health and illness that is less susceptible to the criticisms of the current DSM framework, and which can satisfyingly account for the effectiveness of mindfulness-based interventions for a wide range of psychiatric disorders. Social anxiety disorder Social anxiety disorder (SAD), alternatively referred to as social phobia, is an anxiety disorder that pertains specifically to social situations. SAD affects approximately seven percent of Americans annually (American Psychiatric Association, 2013), and has a lifetime prevalence of approximately twelve percent (Kessler et al., 2005). -

John McDowell has responded by claiming that skillful coping is pervasively conceptual and by dismissing the relevance of the normative phenomena to which Dreyfus calls attention. I argue that a more careful analysis of both reflective and unreflective experience reveals that possessing conceptual capacities—no less than possessing skillful, action-oriented bodies— changes the nature and content of perception. Consequently, while Dreyfus is right to insist on the relevance of our skillful and unreflective bodily practices, he misunderstands the relationship between coping and language specifically, and hence between coping and conceptuality more generally. Murdoch University Perth, Western Australia 2004 I declare that this thesis is my own account of my research. ------------------------------------- Robert Daniel Victorin-Vangerud i Abstract “Facing Nature: The Infinite in the Flesh” by Robert Victorin-Vangerud This thesis explores the relation between two interpretations of chôra, drawn from a reading of Plato’s Timaeus. The first I label the elemental chôra. The second, I call the social chôra. The first chapter addresses the elements in Ionian philosophy, with an eye toward the political and social backdrop of the important cosmological notion of isonomia, law of equals. Here social and elemental are continuous. Chapter two looks at the next phase of Presocratic thought, Elea, specifically Parmenides and his influence on later thought, then turns to Heidegger’s reading of Parmenides’ through the key word of alêtheia. Finally, I offer a reading of Parmenides through a different key word— trust. The third chapter examines Plato’s cosmology in the Timaeus, focusing on the way the beginning of this dialogue inflects the dialogue in a political/social direction, putting the social chôra in tension with the elemental chôra that the body of the Timaeus’ discusses. In the fourth chapter, which examines the Phaedrus, this tension is inverted, since this dialogue on writing and justice set in what proves to be the mesmerizing and erotic elemental milieu of the world outside the walls of the polis. The second half of the dissertation turns to some modern thinkers within the phenomenological tradition or its wake who write about elementals. -

It is “ethics." 1 – Martin Heidegger Senne van den Berg Abstract: Martin Heidegger’s 1947 Letter on Humanism takes up a significant place in the oeuvre of the German philosopher. This important text is often discussed for two topics: Heidegger’s discussion of humanism, and his discussion of ethics as ‘abode.’ However, these two topics are being discussed isolated from each other, which obscures the inherent relation there is between the two for Heidegger. This paper will show that Heidegger’s discussion of humanism in the Letter is decisively shaped by his ethical preoccupations. I. Hatab EGINNING WITH Being and Time, Heidegger was engaged in thinking the Bword truth (Wahrheit) in terms of the notion of un concealment (aletheia).1 Such thinking stemmed from a two-fold interpretation: (1) an etymological analy sis of the Greek word for truth, stressing the alpha-privative; (2) a phenomenolog ical analysis of the priority of disclosure, which is implicit but unspoken in ordinary conceptions of truth. In regard to the correspondence theory, for example, before a statement can be matched with a state of affairs, "something" must first show itself (the presence of a phenomenon, the meaning of Being in general) in a process of emergence out of concealment. This is a deeper sense of truth that Heidegger came to call the "truth of Being." The notion of emergence expressed as a double-negative (un-concealment) mirrors Heidegger's depiction of the negativity of Being (the Being-Nothing correlation) and his critique of metaphysical foundationalism, which was grounded in various positive states of being. The "destruction" of metaphysics was meant to show how this negative dimension was covered up in the tradition, but also how it could be drawn out by a new reading of the history of metaphysics. In regard to truth, its metaphysical manifestations (representation, correspondence, correctness, certainty) missed the negative background of mystery implied in any and all disclosure, un concealment. At the end of his thinking, Heidegger turned to address this mystery as such, independent of metaphysics or advents of Being (un-concealment), to think that which withdraws in the disclosure of the Being of beings (e.g., the Difference, Ereignis, lethe). -

This striving toward connectedness with the totality of life, with nature itself, a nature into which we are born, this is the deepest meaning and the true essence of National Socialist thought:' 1 In our zeal to condemn the status quo, radicals often carelessly toss about epithets like "fascist" and "ecofascist;' thus contributing to a sort of conceptual inflation that in no way furthers effective social critique.
