Music on Sea performs all Core and Extension roles as set out by Arts Council England. These roles underpin all planning and musical activity that we offer. Core roles of Music on Sea: 1 ) Ensure that every child aged five to 18 has the opportunity to learn a musical instrument through whole-class ensemble teaching programmes. 2) Provide opportunities to play in ensembles and to perform from an early stage. 3) Ensure that clear progression routes are available and affordable to all young people. 4) Develop a singing strategy to ensure that every pupil is singing regularly and that choirs and other vocal ensembles are available in the area. Extension roles of Music on Sea: A) Offer Continuous Professional Development (CPD) to school staff, particularly in supporting schools to deliver music in the curriculum. B) Provide an instrument loan service, with discounts or free provision for those on low incomes. C) Provide access to large scale and/or high quality music experiences for pupils, working with professional musicians and/or venues. This may include undertaking work to publicise the opportunities available to schools, parents/carers and students. 3 www.musiconsea.co.uk | [email protected] Music on Sea - National Curriculum National Curriculum Overview KS1 Use voices expressively and creatively, singing songs and speaking chants and rhymes. Play tuned and untuned instruments musically. Listen with concentration and understanding to a range of high-quality live and recorded music. Experiment with, create and combine sounds. KS2 Play and perform in solo and ensembles contexts, using voices and instruments. Improvise and compose. Use and understand staff and other notations. Listen to and appreciate a wide range of music from different traditions and from great composers and musicians. Have an understanding of the history of music. KS3 Playing instruments musically, fluently and with accuracy and expression. Improvise and compose, extend and develop ideas. Use the stave and other relevant notations in a range of genres and traditions. Identify and use inter-related dimensions of music with increasing sophistication, using tonalities and different types of scales. Listening with increasing discrimination. Develop a deepening understanding of music they perform and to which they listen, and its history. A great free resource to support and deliver listening and music appreciation for KS2 and KS3. www.bbc.com/teach/ten-pieces 4 www.musiconsea.co.uk | [email protected] Instrumental Teaching Music on Sea serves all schools promoting high quality music education both in the curriculum and through individual and small group instrumental and vocal teaching. What do we offer? High quality individual and small group tuition from specialist music teachers with appropriate safeguarding and DBS checks A mentoring programme developed in partnership with Trinity College to support tutors through lesson observation and performance management leading to continued professional development (CPD) Full range of instruments and styles taught Fully accountable service who communicate with schools, parents, teachers and our management team Teaching tailored to the needs and aspirations of each student Access to a variety of music examination routes including ABRSM, Trinity College, and Rock School. What does it cost? 15 minute individual lesson costs £7.50 per student per week 20 minute individual lesson costs £10.00 per student per week 30 minute individual lesson costs £15.00 per student per week Prices listed above are set until 31st March 2019. A term’s notice will be given regarding any change in rate. All lessons are based on a minimum package of 10 weeks per term. Schools may agree more weeks in advance. Lessons are invoiced on a termly basis to the school. Is there any financial support available? Schools should have published their policy on providing some financial support for Looked After Children or those who have registered and are eligible for Free School Meals/Pupil Premium. Music on Sea also provides a bursary for students, subject to successful application. Details can be found on page 8. Extra curricular activities Music on Sea is also able to run after school music clubs, school bands, orchestras and groups, including rock and pop at £35 per hour. 5 www.musiconsea.co.uk | [email protected] Instrument Hire and Loan Music on Sea have many musical instruments available to hire for students learning within Southend or to Southend schools. What do we offer? All students attending a Southend school are able to hire an instrument from Music on Sea. What does it cost? Instrument hire is currently charged at £20.00 per term. Each instrument is loaned for a minimum of a term and the parent will be charged, via invoice, on a termly basis. Is there any financial support available? Free hire is available to those: in receipt of Free School Meals or Pupil Premium Grant learners with a statement of Special Educational Needs or EHCP young carers Looked After Children Instrument loans to schools Schools can borrow individual or sets of instruments free of charge (depending on availability) for a term at a time for use in class lessons and school musical activities on the condition that they remain on school premises at all times. Did you know? Music on Sea has a wide range of instruments available for hire and loan including class sets of violins, recorders, and a range of the new plastic beginner instruments: pbones, ptrumpets and clarineos. We have saxophones, keyboards, electric guitars, basses, amps, steel pans, samba drums and full range of good quality orchestral instruments for beginners and emerging players. For short term loan and events, handbells, glockenspiels and a KS1 class untuned percussion box is available. Music on Sea also has a portable PA system that can be hired at a very reasonable rate for a fete or performance. Please note: as instruments are stored offsite at Southend Adult Community College, schools and individuals will need to arrange collection as Music on Sea is unable to deliver. 6 www.musiconsea.co.uk | [email protected] Whole Class Ensemble Teaching A core requirement of the National Plan for Music Education is that every child should have the opportunity to learn a musical instrument through whole class ensemble teaching (WCET). WCET projects are led by high-quality music teachers who will develop musical skills that can be applied in National Curriculum music lessons. For some this may be the start of a life-long hobby or, indeed, the first step on a rewarding career path. What do we offer? A one term programme of free tuition to an identified primary class/year group during the academic year is available through the First Access Programme The ability to extend provision further funded by the school. A minimum of 10 weeks of tuition. Free whole class instrument loan. Free online Music Curriculum resource (Charanga) and Music on Sea support National Curriculum Music delivery.
