Auckland Transport have announced they will introduce sweeping changes to speed limits as they signalled some time ago. As I have commented before their rationale is that “inappropriate speed” contributes to 20% of deaths and serious injuries in the Super City. So, from June next year the CBD will be saddled with a blanket 30 kph speed limit, and many of the Franklin and Rodney rural roads will reduce from 100 kph to 80 or 60 kph. A record 11722 submissions were received, of which 2503 were in support, 3317 against and the balance had no firm stance. I could point out that 80% of deaths and injuries have no connection with inappropriate speed. I could surmise that the decision largely flies in the face of public opinion. I could wish them luck in getting public buy-in and compliance. I could question how a major regulatory constraint on all rate payers can be decided by unelected bureaucrats rather than the Council. But frankly, why bother? They are Council Controlled Organisation but seem to have an independence that suggests no Council control exists. I sincerely hope I am proved wrong, but I foresee very little change to the accident statistics and very little adherence to the new limits. Enough said... I have been following the MotoGP with interest this season (yes, I know they are missing 2 wheels) and it’s been well worth it. With World Champion Marc Marquez being given a curry up by the rookie Quartararo, privateer teams often out-performing the factory teams and some scintillating racing it has been great to watch.

Second and third were the similarly Michelin-equipped N°8 and N°7 Toyota TS050 Hybrids in the hands of Mike Conway/Kamui Kobayashi/Jose María López and Sébastien Buemi/Kazuki Nakajima/Brendon Hartley respectively. In contrast, the French firm’s LMP2 partners were down on luck in Shanghai. The class’s pole-winning N°42 ORECA 07-Gibson of Cool Racing, Lapierre/Borga/Coigny was halted by Race Control after suffering an electronics problem, while the N°22 United Autosports car of Hanson/Albuquerque/Di Resta lost power after debris got blocked in the air intake of its engine, eliminating it from the scrap for victory. Despite an unscheduled pit stop to cure the problem on Lap 8, it still completed the distance in third place – just 21 seconds short of the winner – to showcase the potential of its Michelin rubber both in qualifying and on race day. The LMGTE Pro class was topped by the N°92 Porsche 911 RSR of Christensen/Estre, ahead of Bruni/Lietz’s N°91 sister car and Aston Martin Racing’s N°97 Vantage AMR (Lynn/Martin).     B Page 1 of 45 EDITORSPEAK … email Trevor [email protected] I’m a few weeks into my new role now and I think I’m beginning to get my head back into the car industry after a 3-year break while I fulfilled the farmer / sheep milk entrepreneur / builder / plumber / electrician / handyman brief. I’ve enjoyed the flexibility of being on the farm (let) and getting out in the open air every day (yes even the wet days can be OK …. the wet AND cold less so), plus no motorised transport other than the tractor equals great fitness, and I will miss that. However, like most of you, cars are in my blood, and you never quite get rid of that, so the transition hasn’t been too hard. Like most moves it’s the people that I will miss most - the peninsula is just isolated enough to attract the creative, independent, idiosyncratic types which make the community such an interesting and vibrant place to live. That and the sea views …. and the beach at the end of the farm …. sigh. That said I am looking forward to reconnecting with everyone we left behind when we moved up north and intend to be racing in the next FAE Winter Series, so look out for the loony with the “L” plates wobbling around at the back of the field. Anyway, here comes the blatant plug. Feel free to call in to Ian Humphrey Motors on Tremaine Ave and have a chat and a coffee anytime.
