Issues of Image and Performance in the Beatles' Films
“All I’ve got to do is Act Naturally”: Issues of Image and Performance in the Beatles’ Films Submitted by Stephanie Anne Piotrowski, AHEA, to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English (Film Studies), 01 October 2008. This thesis is available for Library use on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgement. I certify that all material in this thesis which in not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. (signed)…………Stephanie Piotrowski ……………… Piotrowski 2 Abstract In this thesis, I examine the Beatles’ five feature films in order to argue how undermining generic convention and manipulating performance codes allowed the band to control their relationship with their audience and to gain autonomy over their output. Drawing from P. David Marshall’s work on defining performance codes from the music, film, and television industries, I examine film form and style to illustrate how the Beatles’ filmmakers used these codes in different combinations from previous pop and classical musicals in order to illicit certain responses from the audience. In doing so, the role of the audience from passive viewer to active participant changed the way musicians used film to communicate with their fans. I also consider how the Beatles’ image changed throughout their career as reflected in their films as a way of charting the band’s journey from pop stars to musicians, while also considering the social and cultural factors represented in the band’s image. -

The British Invasion: Finding Traction in America by Piacentino Vona A
The British Invasion: Finding Traction in America by Piacentino Vona A thesis presented to the University Of Waterloo in fulfilment of the thesis requirement for the degree of Master of Arts in History Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, 2018 © Piacentino Vona 2018 Author’s Declaration I hereby declare that I am the sole author of this thesis. This is a true copy of the thesis, including any required final revisions, as accepted by my examiners. I understand that my thesis may be made electronically available to the public. ii Abstract As a period of American History, the 1960s has provided historians and academics with a wealth of material for research and scholarship. Presidents John F. Kennedy, Lyndon B. Johnson and Richard Nixon, the Vietnam War, the hippie era, and the Civil Rights Movement, among other topics have received thorough historical discussion and debate. Music was another key aspect in understanding the social history of the 1960s. But unlike the people and events mentioned above, historians have devoted less attention to music in the historical landscape. The British Invasion was one such key event that impacted America in the 1960s. Bands such as the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and the Who found their way into the United States and majorly impacted American society. Using secondary sources, newspaper articles, interviews and documentaries on these bands, this thesis explores the British Invasion and its influence in the context of 1960s America. This thesis explores multiple bands that came in the initial wave. It follows these bands from 1964-1969, and argues that the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and the Who shared common multiple factors that allowed them to attain the traction to succeed and to maintain that success in the United States. -
The Preface 2002
The First Forty Years A Book In The Cyber Age (Planned Book Preface, 2002) Each edition of my Rolling Stones discography so far has been preceded by the success of one or more new media formats. For my 1985 book Heart Of Stone it was the VHS tape, for the 1996 publication it was the CD and this time it is the CD-R, the DVD and the Internet. CD-Rs are not being dealt with here in any detail; suffice it to say that today almost anybody can burn their private copies of existing CDs and CD-Rs, hence it is virtually impossible to say what’s on the market. DVDs are something different, offering the best both in audio and in picture quality. In the past four or five years a number of important Rolling Stones films have officially been released in this fascinating format: “THE STONES IN THE PARK” (originally released in 1969), “GIMME SHELTER” (1970) , “ROLLING STONES LIVE AT THE MAX” (1990), “ROLLING STONES VOODOO LOUNGE” (1995), and “BRIDGES TO BABYLON WORLD TOUR ‘97”/’98”. “LET’S SPEND THE NIGHT TOGETHER” (from 1982) also saw the light of day, at least in Brazil. Only five or six years ago, no-one could foresee the changes the Internet would bring about in our daily lives - and it goes without saying that a lot of information assembled in this book has been gathered from the web. Perhaps just as important: e-mail has made world-wide contacts so much simpler. And I’m glad to say that I have experienced a lot of support and enthusiasm from collectors, authors, musicians and producers from all over the world. -
