It examines Bourdieu´s central concepts particularly in relation to Heidegger´s major work Being and Time. In the thesis it is shown, what kinds of similarities and differences can be found between the two thinkers. The thesis is also a summary of Bourdieu´s ontology. The thesis is the first extensive treatise on the influence of Heidegger on Bourdieu´s thought. Bourdieu has written about Heidegger at different stages of his career but the relationship between the two has not been discussed much in scholarly literature. With the help of Heidegger´s thought, the thesis clarifies the philosophical dimension in Bourdieu´s thought, especially his social ontology. The relationship between Bourdieu and Heidegger is approached through three questions in the thesis. These are: 1. What are the philosophical similarities between Bourdieu and early Heidegger? 2. What are the differences between them? 3. How is Bourdieu´s social ontology complementary in relation to Heidegger? The questions are examined by close-reading Bourdieu´s theoretical writings and Heidegger´s early philosophical works. The thesis shows that habitus and the social field, the conceptual pair central to Bourdieu´s so called “theory of practice”, is a modification of the conceptual pair Dasein and world that Heidegger uses in Being and Time. This similarity is connected to a broader connection between Bourdieu and Heidegger: both thinkers do away with the subject – object –distinction and show how out experience of reality is constituted in practical, always already interpreted acting in the world. Bourdieu´s thought is also shown to differ from Heidegger´s : Bourdieu emphasizes the significance of empirical findings for understanding social reality. He explicitly criticizes Heidegger for ahistoricality, namely for not examining the societal and historical conditions of the possibility of being human. Bourdieu sees the importance of Heidegger´s phenomenological hermeneutics but demands that it engage in dialogue with empirical research. The thesis brings to light how Bourdieu on the basis of Heideggerian fundamental ontology has developed a social scientific research program and thus taken Heidegger´s early thought on a new path. Bourdieu reforms the Heideggerian conception of the social and builds critical social scientific thought on the foundation of Heideggerian ontology. Bourdieu also attempts to bring out social and historical conditions of the possibility of Heidegger´s thought. As the conclusion of the thesis it is stated that the influence of Heidegger´s early thought on Bourdieu is apparent and complex, even though clear differences between the two thinkers can also be shown. Bourdieun keskeisiä käsitteitä suhteutetaan Heideggerin ajatteluun ja osoitetaan, millaisia yhteyksiä ja eroavaisuuksia näiden kahden ajattelijan välillä on. Tutkielma on samalla kokonaisesitys Bourdieun ontologisesta ajattelusta. Tutkielma on ensimmäinen laaja esitys Heideggerin vaikutuksesta Bourdieun ajatteluun. Bourdieu on uransa eri vaiheissa kirjoittanut Heideggerista, mutta näiden kahden ajattelijan suhde on jäänyt tutkimuskirjallisuudessa muutaman viittauksen tasolle. Tutkielma selventää Heideggerin avulla Bourdieun ajattelun filosofista ulottuvuutta, erityisesti hänen sosiaalista ontologiaansa. Bourdieun ja Heideggerin suhdetta lähestytään tutkielmassa kolmen kysymyksen kautta. Nämä ovat: 1. Mitkä ovat Bourdieun ja Heideggerin ajattelun samankaltaisuudet?, 2. Mitkä ovat näiden kahden ajattelijan eroavaisuudet? ja 3. Miten Bourdieun ajattelu täydentää Heideggerin varhaisfilosofiaa? Kysymyksiä tarkastellaan käymällä läpi Bourdieun teoreettisia kirjoituksia ja Heideggerin varhaisfilosofiaa lähiluvun menetelmällä. Tutkielmassa osoitetaan, että Bourdieun niin kutsutun "käytännön teorian" keskeinen käsitepari habitus ja sosiaalinen kenttä on muunnos Heideggerin Olemisessa ja ajassa käyttämästä käsiteparista Dasein ja maailma. Tämä samankaltaisuus liittyy yleisempään ontologiseen yhtäläisyyteen Heideggerin ja Bourdieun välillä: molemmat murtavat subjektin ja objektin välisen erottelun ja osoittavat, miten kokemuksemme todellisuudesta konstituoituu käytännöllisen, aina jo tulkitun yhteisessä maailmassa toimimisen kautta. Bourdieun todetaan poikkeavan Heideggerista siinä, että Bourdieu korostaa empiiristen tutkimustulosten merkitystä sosiaalisen todellisuuden ymmärtämisessä. Bourdieu kritisoi Heideggeria eksplisiittisesti historiattomuudesta eli siitä, että Heidegger ei tarkastele ihmisenä olemisen yhteiskunnallis-historiallisia ehtoja. Bourdieu näkee Heideggerin fenomenologis-hermeneuttisen ajattelun tärkeyden, mutta vaatii että se asetetaan dialogiseen suhteeseen empiirisen tutkimuksen kanssa. Tutkielma tuo näkyviin, miten Bourdieu on kehittänyt heideggerilaisen fundamentaaliontologian pohjalta sosiaalitieteellisen tutkimusohjelman ja siten vienyt Heideggerin varhaisajattelun uudelle polulle. Bourdieu vahvistaa ja uudistaa heideggerilaisen ajattelun ymmärrystä sosiaalisen luonteesta ja rakentaa Heideggerin ontologian perustalle yhteiskuntakriittistä ajattelua. Bourdieu pyrkii myös osoittamaan Heideggerin ajattelun yhteiskunnallis-historiallisia ehtoja. Tutkielman johtopäätöksenä todetaan, että varhaisen Heideggerin vaikutus Bourdieun ajatteluun on ilmeinen ja monisyinen, vaikka ajattelijoiden välillä on osoitettavissa myös selviä eroja. Arendt’s appropriations on the Heideggerian “to take one’s <it> place” (sich hin-stellen) will be discussed, as well as the Augustinian “finding oneself in the world” (diligere). A twofold disposition of appearance will be distinguished: producing and position, whose transposed to the Arendtian notion of world correspond, respectively, to fabrication (poiesis) of the world, man’s objective in-between space, and to action (praxis) in the world, man’s subjective in-between space. Those conceptual replacements, in a broad sense, uphold a closer imbrication between the activities of the mind and acting, stricto sensu, and consequently, foment not only the valorization of the public space, but the visibility of our acts and deeds as well, calling out the dignity of appearance in ethics. Livingston April 12, 2014 65th Annual Meeting of the Metaphysical Society of America Introduction If the work of the vast majority of great thinkers is any indication—from speculative philosophers to natural theologians to epic poets to theoretical physicists—if their work is indicative of any sort of shared sensibility, it is that the desire to make sense of and give expression to the beauty, meaning, and nature of the cosmos is part of what it means to be human at all. In his most recent book Stephen Hawking boldly proposes that we may have finally discovered the holy grail of modern science, a so‐ called theory of everything, what he once said would be “the ultimate triumph of human reason,” the answer to the perennial question of why there is anything at all.1 From the Large Hadron Collider near Geneva to the agora of Athens in ancient Greece, Plato’s Timaeus is every bit as audacious, even if its understanding of the world and method of elucidation differs radically from the likes of Hawking’s Grand Design. Given the immense breadth and depth, as well as the profundity of insight, contained in Timaeus isn’t at all surprising that that dialogue has captured the creative imagination of so many generations of thinkers in such a wide variety of contexts. A hermeneutic phenomenological methodology is used to reveal the phenomena, then to interpret the subsequent text through understandings of accessibility and use-potential which derive from the social barriers model and from affordance theory respectively. The significance of the study for policy, practice and research is a better understanding of how mobility impairment impacts workers who have historically and currently, been and remain, un- and under- employed. ISBN 978-3-030-24639-6 Matthew Kruger-Ross (West Chester University of Pennsylvania) In Heidegger on Affect, Christos Hadjioannou gathers recent and rele- vant philosophical contributions on topics at the intersection of Martin Heidegger and “affect.” “Affect” is selected as the best all- encompassing English word to refer at once to Stimmung (mood) and Befindlichkeit (disposition or attunement). Each of the twelve chapters presents and discusses a topic within the realm of affectivity, including contributions from some of the most eminent Heidegger scholars. All of the authors also provide their own translations of the key terms Heideg- ger uses to think the affective realm. Rather than unnecessarily muddy- ing the waters, this editorial decision works well for each of the contrib- uting authors, allowing them to develop their analyses, so to say, in their own terms. The contributions increase the philosophical attention paid to emotion and affect in Heidegger’s thought and make Heidegger’s unique terminology more accessible to the English-speaking scholarly community. Mahon O’Brien’s opening chapter provides a grounding in Hei- degger’s thinking on affect by drawing attention to Heidegger’s writings on nothing and nothingness. In referencing the 1935 Introduction to Metaphysics, as well as the iterations of Heidegger’s inaugural “What is Metaphysics?” lecture, O’Brien argues that Heidegger’s thought about “nothing” continues the analyses begun on anxiety/angst in Being and Time, thereby demonstrating the presence of a connection between these two periods of Heidegger’s work.

Hatab ROM EARLY IN HIS THINKING Heidegger subordinated the question of F ethics to the question of Being. Like other ontical matters, ethics could not be addressed adequately until the ontological question of Dasein's general mode of Being was given priority. I Heidegger often indicated that this should not be taken to mean a rejection of, or indifference toward, ethics; rather, ethics, again like other ontic regions, has concealed within its mode of thinking a primordial dimension that can open up the way in which Dasein is in the world. My reading of this ontic-ontological differentiation is as follows. Ethics is rich in its analysis of normative topics but poor in attention to our being-ethical-in-the-world, in the fullest sense that Heidegger would give to such a phrase. This coordination of ethics and ontology suggests the possibility of taking up ethics anew once we have clarified the overall existential constitution of Dasein. Although Heidegger often gives the impression of segregating ontology from "practical" disciplines like ethics, I am convinced that this was an analytical division and not a substantive one. 2 Much in the early Heidegger has seemed promising for an investigation of ethics. 3 But there is also a good deal of suspicion about the ethical possibilities in Heidegger (notably in the work of Habermas and Levinas). Given the Olympian distance of Heidegger's later thought (e.g., the claim that Denken has "no result" and "no effect"4) and given his fascist politics together with the deceit and galling silence of the postwar years, the segregation of ethics from ontology can be interpreted as a more heinous division-that Heidegger's thought was or became indifferent to ethics, or worse, inseparable from something dark and barbaric.

    1 First European Pragmatism Conference, Rome, September 19-21, 2012 “Pragmatism in the Context of Modern Philosophy” THE UNITY AND DIVERSITY OF PRAGMATIST THOUGHT Sami Pihlström Helsinki Collegium for Advanced Studies & University of Jyväskylä, Finland E-mail: [email protected] Introduction This paper revisits the issue of the unity vs. diversity of pragmatism. As is well known, this topic was explored almost immediately after pragmatism had been introduced by William James and other classical figures as a new philosophical method and orientation – Arthur Lovejoy’s critical analysis “thirteen pragmatisms” is a famous early contribution – and the discussion was intensified again in the 1980s when several scholars of classical pragmatism accused leading neopragmatists of misinterpreting or misrepresenting the pragmatist tradition. For example, it has been argued – in my view compellingly – that Richard Rorty’s radically antirepresentationalist conception of pragmatism is based on problematic understanding of what pragmatism originally was or is. However, I will suggest in this paper that it can be argued, applying the pragmatic method itself, that the question concerning unity vs. diversity must itself be examined pragmatically, i.e., in terms of the potential difference it makes in our pragmatist philosophizing. For antiessentialist pragmatists, there can hardly be any timeless, ahistorical, universal essence of pragmatism (that is, no single fundamental criterion that pragmatist thought must fulfill, distinguishing pragmatism from other philosophical methods or frameworks), but on the other hand pragmatism cannot be defined so widely that “anything goes” within it. The need to find a balance between these implausible extremes – a search for a pragmatically workable “middle ground” in this metaphilosophical issue – will be illuminated by drawing attention to the relation between pragmatism and some other modern philosophical orientations, including Wittgensteinian philosophy in particular.
