The texts I focus on are Heidegger’s Sein und Zeit (1927), “Vom Wesen des Grundes” (1928), “Vom Wesen der Wahrheit” (lecture 1930, print 1943), Beiträge zur Philosopie (vom Ereignis) (written 1936-38, but not published until 1989), and Deleuze’s Différence et répétition (1968). My focus is on the way each philosopher advances an account of the event in relation to a set of key fundamental themes. For Heidegger, these are truth, difference, ground, and time-space. For Deleuze I also discuss ground and time, but focus especially on difference. Deleuze’s account of difference entails a distinction between a “virtual” register of dialectical Ideas and an “actual” register of systems of simulacra, and clarifying his concept of event in relation to these plays a dominant role in my analysis. Deleuze’s account of dialectical Ideas is profoundly influenced by that of the iv early twentieth century mathematician and philosopher, Albert Lautman (1908-1944). Lautman, in turn, developed his account through an engagement with Heidegger’s early work. In Chapter V, I reconstruct the Heideggerian line of influence on Deleuze via Lautman. Beginning in the mid-1930s Heidegger understands being to be evental in nature, while difference constitutes an essential dimension of the event, though the latter point is often neglected in the scholarship. Truth, ground, and time-space articulate the structure and dynamics of being as event. For Deleuze, being is difference, but difference differentiates by way of events. Ground, time, systems of simulacra, and dialectical Ideas articulate the structure of being’s evental differentiation and the genesis of worlds of beings possessing quasi-stable identities modulated     PROLEGOMENON FOR AN ETHICS OF VISIBILITY IN HANNAH ARENDT* Bethânia Assy** ABSTRACT This paper aims to discuss the Arendtian notions of appearance and perception in order to promote a displacement of those conceptions from the generally associated domain of passive apprehension of the faculty of knowledge towards the domain of a praxiology of action and language, based on an active perception. Arendt’s appropriations on the Heideggerian “to take one’s <it> place” (sich hin-stellen) will be discussed, as well as the Augustinian “finding oneself in the world” (diligere). A twofold disposition of appearance will be distinguished: producing and position, whose transposed to the Arendtian notion of world correspond, respectively, to fabrication (poiesis) of the world, man’s objective in-between space, and to action (praxis) in the world, man’s subjective in-between space. Those conceptual replacements, in a broad sense, uphold a closer imbrication between the activities of the mind and acting, stricto sensu, and consequently, foment not only the valorization of the public space, but the visibility of our acts and deeds as well, calling out the dignity of appearance in ethics. At first glance, this term is an appeal to the revolutionary mass- es of the National Socialist revolution in a way that demarcates a distinction between the rootedness of the German People (capital “P”) and the rootlessness of the modern rabble (or people). But this distinction is not a sufficient explanation of Heidegger’s position, because Heidegger simultaneously seems to hold that even the Germans are characterized by a lack of identity. What is required is a further appropriation of the proper. My suggestion is that this logic of the Volk is not only useful for understanding Heidegger’s thought during the war, but also an indication of what happened after he lost faith in the National Socialist movement and thus had to make the lack of the People the basis of his thought. For Heidegger, this term functions as the intersection between phi- losophy and politics and, consequently, it preoccupies him throughout the turbulent years from the National Socialist revolution in 1933 to the end of WWII in 1945. The shift from individual Dasein to the Dasein of the German People has often been noted as the very point at which Heidegger’s fundamen- tal ontology intersects with his disastrous political views.

    52 Philosophy in a Dark Time: Martin Heidegger and the Third Reich TIMOTHY O’HAGAN Like Oscar Wilde I can resist everything except temptation. So when I re- ceived Anne Meylan’s tempting invitation to contribute to this Festschrift for Pascal Engel I accepted without hesitation, before I had time to think whether I had anything for the occasion. Finally I suggested to Anne the text of a pub- lic lecture which I delivered in 2008 and which I had shown to Pascal, who responded to it with his customary enthusiasm and barrage of papers of his own on similar topics. But when I re-read it, I realized that it had been written for the general public rather than the professional philosophers who would be likely to read this collection of essays. So what was I to do with it? I’ve decided to present it in two parts. In Part One I reproduce the original lecture, unchanged except for a few minor corrections. In Part Two I engage with a tiny fraction of the vast secondary literature which has built up over the years and which shows no sign of abating. 1. Part One: The 2008 Lecture Curtain-Raiser Let us start with two dates, 1927 and 1933. In 1927 Adolf Hitler’s Mein Kampf (volume II) was published. So too was Martin Heidegger’s magnum opus Being and Time. In 1933 two appointments were made: Hitler as Chancellor of the German Reich and Heidegger as Rector of Freiburg University. In 1927 it was a case of sheer coincidence; in 1933 the two events were closely linked.

Livingston April 12, 2014 65th Annual Meeting of the Metaphysical Society of America Introduction If the work of the vast majority of great thinkers is any indication—from speculative philosophers to natural theologians to epic poets to theoretical physicists—if their work is indicative of any sort of shared sensibility, it is that the desire to make sense of and give expression to the beauty, meaning, and nature of the cosmos is part of what it means to be human at all. In his most recent book Stephen Hawking boldly proposes that we may have finally discovered the holy grail of modern science, a so‐ called theory of everything, what he once said would be “the ultimate triumph of human reason,” the answer to the perennial question of why there is anything at all.1 From the Large Hadron Collider near Geneva to the agora of Athens in ancient Greece, Plato’s Timaeus is every bit as audacious, even if its understanding of the world and method of elucidation differs radically from the likes of Hawking’s Grand Design. Given the immense breadth and depth, as well as the profundity of insight, contained in Timaeus isn’t at all surprising that that dialogue has captured the creative imagination of so many generations of thinkers in such a wide variety of contexts. A hermeneutic phenomenological methodology is used to reveal the phenomena, then to interpret the subsequent text through understandings of accessibility and use-potential which derive from the social barriers model and from affordance theory respectively. The significance of the study for policy, practice and research is a better understanding of how mobility impairment impacts workers who have historically and currently, been and remain, un- and under- employed.     Was Heidegger a Mystic? Jeff Guilford North Carolina State University Faculty Mentor: Marina Bykova North Carolina State University ABSTRACT The goal of Martin Heidegger’s philosophy is to lead his readers to an experience of Being. Because Being is not conceived of as a thing, but as that which ‘transcends’ things, thinking and talking about it in traditional terms becomes impossible. Such a goal is strikingly similar to the goals of many of the world’s most prominent mystical traditions, and prompts the question, was Heidegger a mystic? In this paper I seek to answer this question by comparing the ways in which Heidegger be- lieves that an experience of Being may be attained to the ways that mystics from many cultures have gone about bringing themselves to an experience of the transcendent. After demonstrating the strong analogies between the methods of Heidegger and of the mystics, I conclude that Heidegger is indeed a mystic and that the experience that he hopes to help people attain is probably the same experience toward which the mystics have traditionally striven. “There is a thinking more rigorous than the not red,’ the house is presented as an ob- conceptual” ~Martin Heidegger ject that lacks the property of redness. Magrini DePaul University ABSTRACT: Analyzing the fundamental ontology of Dasein in Martin Heidegger's Being and Time, this essay details the essential relationship between the mood of "anxiety" (Angst) and Dasein ' s authentic comportment to existence. Although a highly disturbing experience, anxiety holds the potential for enlightenment, as it opens Dasein to the fundamental characteristics of its temporal authenticity. Dasein assents to its Selfhood and enacts its freedom in a "resolute," authentic manner only when it grasps the difficult and burdensome aspects of life revealed by way of Angst's attunement. Thus, I argue that anxiety is the single most important mode of human attunement that Heidegger describes.
