Peduti, S.J. December 2009 Dissertation Supervised by James Swindal, Ph.D. Much neglected is Heidegger’s latter work in favor of the fundamental ontology of Being and Time. Consequentially, conceptions of Heidegger’s question of Being are oftentimes misconceived. Currently three main models have been proposed: (1) existential phenomenology, exemplified by Joseph Langan in the 1950s; (2) the popular thought of Being model in the 1960s as developed by William Richardson; (3) and in counter distinction to these unified models Joseph Kockelmans offers in the 1970s the many ways model, touting the end of systems. These misconstruals have spawned much Heideggerian dialogue, and in recent years, has had its effect upon Western continental scholarship from structuralism to post-structuralism. Rather than usual conceptual models, this dissertation proposes a new model of Heideggerian scholarship seen through the lens of “Being as Saying.” Neither mystical iv nor incomprehensible Heidegger’s unique linguistic turn negotiates the inadequacies of modern conceptions of the subject, object and cognition. Through a careful reading of Heidegger’s work from 1949-1976, I trace Heidegger’s utter reliance upon language as the way-making of Being, “Sprache als Be-wëgen.” More originary than ordinary language, Heidegger’s Being as Saying arises from Nietzsche’s insights on nihilism. For Heidegger Being is no-thing, and as such reveals itself as unconcealment. We hear it as a deep, unsettling silence. From Being’s two-fold character of concealing and revealing and humanity’s subsequent discomfit, we derive all forms of communication, including thought and logic, even our world as a response to, and/or evasion from this pervasive silence. Most notably Heidegger unseats the preeminent stature of thought and subject, only to reincorporate them within language. To achieve this he develops notions of Ereignis and Geviert, at once simple and complex, by which Being manifests itself, no longer through Dasein as prime discloser, but through a crossing of four regions. What emerges is a dynamic gathering-as-separated dialogue, a far richer, relational understanding of the world and the person. Heidegger’s new way can best be described as a “phenomenology of the inapparent,” wherein Being and humanity are in a relational dialogue of unconcealing and revealing. With this insight we can reengage the Western philosophical tradition meditatively. v DEDICATION For Elizabeth, my mother, words simply fail to express my gratitude to her. vi ACKNOWLEDGMENT Not unlike other projects, this thesis had many phases, able hands, and sharp eyes. From the outset it seemed that even its conception was never without assistance. From Tom Sheehan’s plea for a new Heideggerian paradigm to Wilhelm Wurzer’s open-ended questioning, the project emerged over time. Yet its inchoate inception never would have moved forward without the constant encouragement of my director, Jim Swindal. While not a Heideggerian himself, he drew my prose beyond my own comfortable circle of interpretation. Richard Rojcewicz, a seasoned translator of numerous texts of Heidegger, continually tied my own thought closer to Heidegger’s text. Andrew Cutrofello, on the other hand, offered weekly advice on various interlocutors of Heidegger and their concerns. From their guidance I was able to bridge Heidegger’s later work with current Western traditions.     PROLEGOMENON FOR AN ETHICS OF VISIBILITY IN HANNAH ARENDT* Bethânia Assy** ABSTRACT This paper aims to discuss the Arendtian notions of appearance and perception in order to promote a displacement of those conceptions from the generally associated domain of passive apprehension of the faculty of knowledge towards the domain of a praxiology of action and language, based on an active perception. Arendt’s appropriations on the Heideggerian “to take one’s <it> place” (sich hin-stellen) will be discussed, as well as the Augustinian “finding oneself in the world” (diligere). A twofold disposition of appearance will be distinguished: producing and position, whose transposed to the Arendtian notion of world correspond, respectively, to fabrication (poiesis) of the world, man’s objective in-between space, and to action (praxis) in the world, man’s subjective in-between space. Those conceptual replacements, in a broad sense, uphold a closer imbrication between the activities of the mind and acting, stricto sensu, and consequently, foment not only the valorization of the public space, but the visibility of our acts and deeds as well, calling out the dignity of appearance in ethics.     Derrida and Heidegger in France TOM ROCKMORE, Duquesne University For a long period after the war, roughly from the rise of structuralism in the 1950s until the publication of Victor FarIas's Heideggerand Nazism in 1987, Martin Heidegger played a crucial role as the single most important thinker of "French" philosophy.1 In recent years, Jacques Derrida, in some ways a quintessentially French thinker, has become, with Hans-Georg Gadamer, one of Heidegger's two most important exponents. Heidegger's special role in French philosophy is attributable to a number of circumstances, including the tireless advocacy of Jean Beaufret, who, more than any other person, promoted Heidegger's position and defended it against criticism, especially against criticism motivated by Heidegger's turn toward Nazism. After Beaufret's death in 1982, Derrida increasingly assumed Beaufret's mantle as Heidegger's most important French proponent. Derrida's theory emerged within a generally Heideggerian atmosphere. Although never wholly uncritical, he has contributed in important ways to maintaining a French reading of Heidegger. Since the resurgence of interest in Heidegger's Nazism and the subsequent, rapid decline of Heidegger in France, Derrida has assumed a double role as both critic and staunch defender of a certain French view of Heidegger. This paper considers the complex interaction between Denida and Heidegger in France. Heidegger's effect on his students takes different forms. Many limit themselves to exegesis of the master's thought, while others develop ideas that are often influenced, even strongly influenced, by Heidegger's position. Gadamer, who attended Heidegger's lectures as a student, was unable to break free from his master's influence for many years.

Livingston April 12, 2014 65th Annual Meeting of the Metaphysical Society of America Introduction If the work of the vast majority of great thinkers is any indication—from speculative philosophers to natural theologians to epic poets to theoretical physicists—if their work is indicative of any sort of shared sensibility, it is that the desire to make sense of and give expression to the beauty, meaning, and nature of the cosmos is part of what it means to be human at all. In his most recent book Stephen Hawking boldly proposes that we may have finally discovered the holy grail of modern science, a so‐ called theory of everything, what he once said would be “the ultimate triumph of human reason,” the answer to the perennial question of why there is anything at all.1 From the Large Hadron Collider near Geneva to the agora of Athens in ancient Greece, Plato’s Timaeus is every bit as audacious, even if its understanding of the world and method of elucidation differs radically from the likes of Hawking’s Grand Design. Given the immense breadth and depth, as well as the profundity of insight, contained in Timaeus isn’t at all surprising that that dialogue has captured the creative imagination of so many generations of thinkers in such a wide variety of contexts. A hermeneutic phenomenological methodology is used to reveal the phenomena, then to interpret the subsequent text through understandings of accessibility and use-potential which derive from the social barriers model and from affordance theory respectively. The significance of the study for policy, practice and research is a better understanding of how mobility impairment impacts workers who have historically and currently, been and remain, un- and under- employed. Eleven participants, all with mobility impairments, some self-employed and others employed, but all white-collar professionals or management-level ‘knowledge workers’, constitute the purposive sample used in the study.

    Journal of French Philosophy Volume 17, Number 1, Spring 2007 Slaughterbench of Humanisms: The 1987 Heidegger Affair in Intellectual-Historical Perspective Stefanos Geroulanos In the fall of 1987, one of the most significant affairs in recent intellectual history erupted in France when the unknown Chilean writer Victor Farias published a well-researched but philosophically unimpressive book on Martin Heidegger’s Nazism. To publishers abroad, notably in Germany, the volume rang a hollow bell, and remained unprinted, as debates on existentialism, Heidegger’s engagement with the Nazi party, and his continuing political position in the fifties lay in the past.1 But in France, despite a certain academic awareness of Heidegger’s Nazi engagement, the effect was very different:2 Farias struck a nerve, and suddenly the intellectual milieu erupted into furious polemics. This 1987 Heidegger Affair has long been read as the final curtain for a movement that lent support to several epistemological ruptures in French philosophy (according to some of the more positive accounts) or flourished as an uncritical and pretentious audience for Heidegger (in the less generous ones). Yet although it provided a number of signs indicating shifts in intellectual tendencies, the affair has never been seriously treated as a barometer for the recent past of French thought.3 The present essay attempts to offer a necessarily schematic intellectual- historical description of the 1987 affair as an intellectual event emerging with the rise of a neo-humanist politics that
