30 November 2010 Call for Symposia/ Workshop 31 January 2011 Deadline for Abstract Submissions 15 March 2011 Notification of the acceptance of the abstracts 31 March 2011 Deadline for early registration 30 April 2011 Deadline on submission of speakers presentation 18 May 2011 Registration Closed 1 22nd Pacific Science Message from the President Congress of Pacific Science Association

On behalf of the Paci c Science Association (PSA), I would like to invite you to participate in the 22nd Paci c Science Congress in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia from 14 – 17 June 2010.

e theme of the 22nd Congress is “Asia Paci c Science in the 21st Century: Meeting the Challenges of Global Change”. is key concept encompasses both global environmental change and globalization – two of the most signi cant forces reshaping our planet, and how they interact and reinforce the other.

e scale, pace, and complexity of issues now facing humanity are daunting to scientists, policymakers, and the public alike. Indeed, the nature of the problems facing us makes it essential that we broaden the scope of scienti c inquiry, using interdisciplinary and synergistic approaches to understand and address increasingly complex challenges.

No single scholarly discipline possesses the range of analytical tools needed to illuminate the full complexity of phenomena such as global climate, for example. is requires approaches and tools of physics, meteorology, computer sciences, economics, and many other disciplines. Moreover, changes in environmental processes are often driven by larger social and economic phenomena that are themselves undergoing rapid change. Accelerating economic and cultural linkages between nations, as well as social changes within countries, are changing our social and physical landscapes. Security issues, growing vulnerability to natural hazards, access to water and energy resources, health, education and income inequality, the provision of ecosystem services required for human civilization – these are all complex issues that interact and mitigate or amplify each other.

We live in a world full of feedback loops. It is essential for the scienti c community to better understand these interactions. is will require more fruitful cooperation across national and regional borders, as well as multidisciplinary approaches that integrate the traditional “hard” sciences with the tools and approaches of the social sciences.

is is not an easy endeavor. But it is essential if we are to solve the enormous problems facing our planet. PSA and our partners are committed to the goal of enhancing international cooperation and collaboration in order to advance what some call “sustainability science”. e U.S. National Academy of Sciences has described sustainability science as “bring[ing] together scholarship and practice, global and local perspectives from North and South, and disciplines across the natural and social sciences, engineering, and medicine. It can be usefully thought of as "neither ‘‘basic’’ nor ‘‘applied’’ research but as a eld de ned by the problems it addresses rather than by the disciplines it employs.”

PSA was founded ninety years ago to promote the study of natural, social and cultural phenomena in the Asia-Paci c region. We are very pleased to hold our 22nd Paci c Science Congress in Kuala Lumpur, and hope it will catalyze scholarly collaboration and cooperation, facilitate information exchange, enhance opportunities for training and funding, and illuminate critical areas for future research.

We invite you to join us in this very important meeting to advance science in the service of human needs and to improve both the environment and the quality of life for the peoples of the Asia-Paci c. We look forward to seeing you in Kuala Lumpur in June 2011.

Prof. Dr. Congbin Fu President Paci c Science Association

Prof Congbin FU is the Director of the Institute for Climate and Global Change Research (ICGCR) at Nanjing University, and is a member of Chinese Academy of Sciences. He currently serves as Vice President of China Association for Science and Technology, the President of Paci c Science Association, and Executive Board member of International Council for Science (ICSU) and he chairs the scienti c committee for Monsoon Asia Integrated Regional Studies (MAIRS) of Earth Science System Partnership (ESSP). He has long been engaged in the study of Climate variability and dynamics, including air-sea interaction and air-land interaction, and climate-ecosystem interaction on global and regional scales, in particular the modeling and diagnosis of the variations of the monsoon system and its response and feedback to earth system dynamics.

A Brief Introduction To Malaysia

e Federation of Malaysia comprises of Peninsular Malaysia and the states of Sabah and Sarawak in Borneo, totaling to a population of 25 million. ere is only one place where all the colours, avours, sounds and sights of Asia come together – Malaysia. No other country has Asia's three major races, Malay, Chinese, Indian, plus various other ethnic groups in large numbers. Nowhere is there such exciting diversity of cultures, festivals, traditions and customs, oering myriad experiences. One of Malaysia’s key attractions is its extreme contrasts. Towering skyscrapers look down upon wooden houses built on stilts, and ve-star hotels sit several metres away from ancient reefs.

Kuala Lumpur, the country’s capital, oers an experience of modern sophistication and nostalgic old-world charm in a single destination. Tour the city to see stunning skyscrapers standing alongside charming pre-war heritage buildings. e city brings together Malaysia’s past and present, its many constituent cultures, and even its remarkable natural treasures.

Climate Malaysia has a tropical, humid climate with temperatures averaging 86°F (30°C), though it is cooler in the highland areas. e major change in seasons is marked by the arrival of the monsoons that bring heavy downpours on the east coast of Peninsula Malaysia, the northeastern part of Sabah and the western end of Sarawak (from November to February). e best time to visit Malaysia is between April and October.
