He revealed a world Americans didn’t know was out there and by doing so, multitudes took to the wilderness to see it for themselves. In 1958, decades before anyone heard the term thru-hiker, he walked the length of California. Five years later he became the first person to traverse Grand Canyon National Park in one arduous, solitary journey, and, at age 69, became the first to travel the entirety of the Colorado River in a single craft. Each of these feats generated a book. Fletcher enchanted and enlightened millions of readers with his immense knowledge, curmudgeonly wit, unique style, and strongly conservationist views. Through his ten books, including The Complete Walker, which sold nearly a million copies, and The Man Who Walked Through Time, the largest selling book ever written about Grand Canyon (it’s still in print after more than fifty years), he earned his great reputation as a celebrator of the natural world and stood ever vigilant against the plundering and despoiling of the planet. As an eminent iconoclast writer, he inspired millions to follow his tracks out of the cities and into wilderness—sometimes into very dangerous places—in order to forge their own connection with the planet. Fletcher the Welshman turned a British custom—long distance walking—into something decidedly American. About the Book The story of Colin Fletcher's life, up until now, has never before been told, for its primary sources were only recently made available. The book focuses on Fletcher’s explorations, writings, world-view, and most importantly, his highly complex personality. It is not a literary biography, nor a rehash of his writings. It is the chronicle of a large, adventure-filled life that takes place in the exotic and often spectacular regions where he lived and the lands through which he trekked and wrote about. With the passing of Carl D. Brandt and Ash Green, Fletcher's literary agent and editor, respectively, there remain no living authorities on his literary career. Because he was obsessed with keeping his life private there is very little information available to the public. Indeed even his closest friends knew only bits and pieces of the entire story. Walking Man is the only place where all the components of Fletcher’s life come together. "Fans of Fletcher's work will be glad to see this biography. As Colin and I worked on The Complete Walker IV, he was keen to finish so he could concentrate on his autobiography, for which he'd been preparing over the years. The accident made that impossible, a bitter disappointment. Thus, I'm grateful to Wehrman for his well-researched account of a memorable life, enabling Colin Fletcher to walk on in memory." Chip Rawlins, co- author of The Complete Walker IV. The Unnatural Act. David Warren, a.k.a. Skeet, is found wandering aimlessly across the Mojave Desert in August 1971. He tells us the tale of his incredible adventures in the Nam. He is a 19 year old, abstemious Presbyterian when he arrives in Vietnam. He is a naive patriotic bumbling virgin tuba player who comes of age under the tutelage of two drug-head hippies, a warlock, and a master musician. Although they are seasoned professional musicians, the band to which Skeet is assigned prides itself in getting away with playing insufferably bad - and suck they did. The cruel band flies into extremely dangerous areas to support firefights by playing putrid arrangements of banal tunes such as The Girl from Ipanema or The Shadow of Your Smile. The guys risk their lives daily to play this dreadful music. Skeet forms The Sky Trippers - an avant-garde electric band that the grunts love and the lifers hate. They fly around the Nam in their chopper playing electric acid concerts in the jungle. Along the way they have many adventures ranging from drug smuggling and whoring to practicing witchcraft and rescuing foot soldiers from the true enemy (the American lifers). Sometimes they perform knee-deep in mud, or use fallen trees for a stage. They often come under enemy fire during their performances - a seriously tough audience! Skeet watches as, one by one, his comrades are injured or killed. The lucky ones leave for home. Toward the end, he finds himself alone in Vietnam so he goes on R & R to Bangkok where he falls in love with a prostitute with a surprise. Eventually he returns home for the biggest shocker of all! Walking Man: The Secret Life of Colin Fletcher (1) Title: Walking Man: The Secret Life of Colin . Publisher: BookBaby. Publication Date: 2016. Binding: Soft cover. Book Condition: Good. About this title. Walking Man is the biography of Colin Fletcher, the man who walked through time. He was an iconic American folk hero best known as the first person to force a passage through the length of Grand Canyon National Park in one arduous solo journey. He was the world's most famous long- distance walker. He was the first thru-hiker. Called the father of modern backpacking by Backpacker Magazine and others, Fletcher was the one who showed us the way―more than a million people followed his shadow into the green world. Born in Wales, he was in the first wave of British Marines to hit the beachhead in Normandy on D-Day. After the war he farmed in Kenya, prospected in British Columbia, and then began his writing career in California where he wrote and published ten books. Fletcher's was a preeminent and powerful voice for environmental concerns on par with Edward Abbey and John Muir. He was to the outdoor world and its preservation, what Leonard Bernstein was to music, or Walter Cronkite to reporting. When Colin Fletcher had something to say, people listened. The impact of his work, while unacknowledged, is seen far and wide today. Although most of them don't know it, the hordes of hikers on the Pacific Crest Trail today would not be there without Fletcher's pioneering work. Colin Fletcher was a backpacker and writer , best known as the author of The The Complete Walker , the comprehensive guide to backpacking that Field and Stream magazine has called ‘the hiker’s Bible’. Born in Cardiff, Wales March 14th 1922, Fletcher was educated in England. He served as a captain in the Royal Marine during World War II and emigrated to Africa after the spook was over. For nine years he was a restless spirit, engaged into farming in Kenya, construction in Zimbabwe, and prospecting in Canada. In 1956 he moved to California. Most likely he wouldn’t have stayed there for long, if he hadn’t got the crazy idea of discovering it on foot. In 1958 he walked the length of the state from the Mexican Border to Oregon, a journey that was the basis for his book The Thousand-Mile Summer . 50 years later and through a chain of serendipitous encounters, Andreas M Cohrs became the first one to retrace the original route through California, based on Fletcher’s personal notes, photos, and his maps. In 1963, Fletcher became the first man to walk the length of Grand Canyon National Park entirely within the rim of the canyon ‘in one go’, as chronicled in his book The Man Who Walked Through Time.
