From Motors To Money By: Julia Nelson

Mr. Work Arefaine, an immigrant from Ethiopia, moved to Harrisonburg 34 years ago and it’s been his home since. For most of those years, he and his family have been NPR enthusiasts because it offers such a vast window to the rest of the world.

“I have an app on my phone so I can listen to the local station, no matter where I am in the country,” Arefaine said. “I can also hear it from Ethiopia because of the app.

In 2004, Arefaine opened an Ethiopian restaurant and music venue called The Blue Nile. After deciding to close its doors and start a real estate career two years ago, he was left with a Toyota Previa that had been used for the catering part of his business. He donated the Previa to WMRA as part of the Car Talk vehicle donation program, in which donated vehicles are picked up (or towed, if neces- sary) and then sold at auction. Proceeds from the vehicle sales help to sustain WMRA’s programming throughout the year. “The main thing is I feel good about it, supporting a radio station,” Arefaine said. “Especially because it comes to this station, to the local station. The other thing is I got a tax deductible. [The tax deduction] is very insignificant, but it makes me feel good that I can support my local radio station.”

After more than three decades in Harrisonburg, Arefaine continues to embrace new opportunities and ways of supporting his local public radio station. If you share his affection for WMRA and have a vehicle–car, truck, van, boat, motorcycle, etc.–that you no longer need or want, please consider adding your support to our station through the Vehicle Donation Program. The Phone Call A submission from Patrice Ludwig

I don’t get many calls to my office phone in the JMU Biology department, so I always get a little nervous when the phone rings. I squinted my eyes and winced, and said “Hello,” a voice I recognized as part of my daily life said “Hi Patrice, this is Al Bartholet from WMRA,” as if I need that last part! He explained the purpose of the call was to ask if I would be willing to serve on WMRA’s Community Advisory Council and he went on to explain the role of the Council.

What an opportunity! I was being asked to serve on a Council of a resource I use every single day! I love our local NPR station! There are so many conversations I start with “Did you hear the piece on Morning Edition yesterday?” My kids and I talk about daily news events regularly because they are backseat NPR kids.

So, I said yes! I said because I want to be a part of continuing to make our public radio station great. I said yes because it would make me a more intentional member of a vibrant community. I said yes because I cannot imagine trying to teach my courses without referencing local and national news that I’ve heard on WMRA. I said yes in order to interact with a group of people that is diverse and insightful.

I walk away from each Council meeting excited to be a part of this community. I get charged up for the ideas we generate. I love hearing the insights of the other members. I think the WMRA community is a creative visionary bunch that rallies around our station. It really is an honor to serve WMRA in this way.

I’m so glad I took that call. Steve Davis: Grand Home Furnishings’ Coca-Cola and White-Glove Service By: Caroline McLaughin

Grand Home Furnishings has made its home in the South for the last 105 years and has been a key part of Harrisonburg’s business community since 1965. Customers are greeted with a Coca-Cola and a smile when they arrive, and they are encouraged to make themselves at home. In their 19 stores across Virginia, West Virginia and Tennessee, Grand prefers to settle in small communities where they can serve customers for years, or even decades, with white-glove service.

Steve Davis is vice president of marketing for Grand Home Furnishings. In that role, he oversees TV and radio advertising, mailings, event marketing, and all print or online electronic messaging. He considers the company connection to WMRA to be essential in his marketing strategy as well as in the civic-minded focus that Grand Home Furnishings maintains in the community.

“Underwriting gives us an additional level of exposure that introduces us to a select group of consumers, without being in a clutter of other businesses,” says Davis about Grand’s relationship with WMRA. “We’re able to stand out.”

The company also supports other NPR stations such as Roanoke’s WVTF. “[NPR] listeners mirror our ideal customer. We offer good services and products, and we want to give as many benefits as we can to customers looking to make a thought-out purchase.”

WMRA Executive Director Al Bartholet says that the station is very pleased to have Grand Home Furnishings as a long-time corporate sponsor. “This partnership is a great representation of a company that understands quality in its products and the quality represented by the public radio audience.” May Community Events
