The Odeon is a covered building, but more modest in size than traditional open-air theatres without roofs. The Odeon could hold a few hundred spectators and therefore a smaller audience. The roof covering allowed the possibility of meetings even in adverse weather conditions. The etymology of the word of the Odeon (covered theatre) means the place of the ode, or of the songs. In this paper are discussed the architectonic and acoustic characteristics of the Odea of Pompeii and Posillipo. With commercial software (Odeon, Room Acoustics Software, Lyngby Denmark) we assess the acoustic characteristics of the Odea of Pompeii and Posillipo in the presence of an original roofing system and show that these buildings were well suited for music, songs and speech.     DINING IN ATHENS Athens is a haven of bustling eateries, ouzeries, ‘souvlaki’ (shishkebob) joints, even Michelin-rated international restaurants and other international cuisine. Our hotel is just a stone’s throw from Syntagma Square (where you’ll want to view the changing of the guard), Plaka (the heart of old Athens) and the Acropolis. A couple of informative websites are: • “Matt Barrett’s Top 10 Things to Do in Athens”: www.athensguide.com/top-10/index.htm • www.athensinfoguide.com Syntagma, Plaka and Monastiraki boast mainly Greek restaurants (simple eateries are known as “tavernas” as opposed to more formal restaurants), although right on Syntagma Square you’ll find the requisite McDonald’s, plus Everest sandwiches and Loxandras souvlaki (on Ermou St). On Mitropoleos Street at Nos. 12-14, is O Tzitzikas kai O Mermigas (‘The Grasshopper and the Ant’), an excellent “mezedopoleio” which serves “mezedes”, like Middle Eastern ‘mezes’ and Spanish ‘tapas’. Call ahead for reservations: 210-324-7607. Off of Stadiou St., near Syntagma, is a sophisticated, slightly upscale restaurant called Pasaji, serving ‘modern’ Greek food. From Syntagma Square, go one block on Stadiou St, turn right at Voukourestiou St, and on the left is City Link - the Stoa Spiromiliou (a covered walkway), where the restaurant is located.     Proceedings of the Institute of Acoustics AN INVESTIGATION INTO THE ACOUSTICS OF THE ODEON OF HERODES ATTICUS Eleni Tavelidou MSc, Solent University Chris Barlow Prof, PhD, MIOA, MAES, Solent University 1 INTRODUCTION An increased interest in the study of the acoustical properties of ancient performance spaces has been reported in recent years. The revival and reproduction of the sound of historical monuments can nowadays be achieved by means of computer modelling software as well as in situ measurements in the view to clarify their acoustic evolution over time[1]. This work has also been encouraged by a number of charters, guidelines and projects put forward from 1931 till nowadays [2], [3]. With the advent of Virtual Reality technologies and 3D environments of high level of detail and accuracy, a realistic representation and navigation within those monuments can also be achieved. This remote real-world experience can serve educational purposes and enhance visitor experience in museums and historical exhibitions. This study investigates the acoustics of an ancient Greek Odeon; the Odeon of Herodes Atticus. Odea were ancient Greek and Roman roofed theatres mainly intended for recitations of an ode (song), hence the name of the structure “Odeon” or “Odeion” as it is also found in the current literature [4], [5].They were often funded by private bodies and tended to be smaller in size compared to the open- air theatres of the same era, but comprised a more elaborate internal décor than the latter [6]. The Odeon of Herodes Atticus (hereafter Odeon HA) is located in Greece in the western part of the ancient Athenian city, Acropolis and it was built by Herodes Atticus, a rich Greek aristocrat and sophist, between 160-169 A.D.
