Peutan, T.D., M.A. An deidh deich bliadhna tha am Mod Naiseanta air ais a rithist an Sruighlea— an Dorus, mar a their iad, a tha fosgladh a mach fo shrathan farsaing na Galldachd gu beanntan is gleanntan na Gaidhealtachd. Mar aite-cruinneachaidh sluaigh as gach cearn a dh’Alba cha b’urrainn a bhith na b’fhearr. A thuilleadh air a sin, chan eil Sruighlea ach mar gum biodh ceum no dha air falbh bho fhaiche Allt a’ Bhonnaich, an raon ainmeil ud far an do choisinn feachd na h-Albainn “ urram is gloir ” nuair a shaor iad an duthaich bho chuing a namhaid. Chan eil mi’n duil, mar sin, gum b’urrainn bad nas freagarraiche fhaotainn gu “ Bratach na Gaidhlig ” a sgaoileadh aig an am so agus sinn a’ feuchainn ri curam a thaobh cor na Gaidhlig a bhrosnachadh aig Mod. Tha cuimhn’ agam leughadh an ait-eigin mineachadh annasach air mar a thug armailt na h-Albainn a bhuaidh a mach an aghaidh feachd lionmhor Shasainn air an latha ainmeil ud. Bhuadhaich iad, bha an sgriobhaiche am beachd, chan ann gu buileach le neart is seasmhachd nan seoid a bh’air an raon ach ann an seadh neo-shuarach, le cuideachadh a fhuair iad bho mhuinntir eile nach robh idir air an ciinntas ’nan luchd-cogaidh. B’iadsan luchd-leanmhainn a’ champa— cocairean, sgalagan agus eadhon searbhantan — a bha ri faire gu h-eagalach ag amharc sios air an raon bho fhasgadh ballachan a’ Chaisteil. Chunnaic iad mar bha’n cath a’ dol, agus an uair a chunnaic iad gu robh am feachd Albannach an cunnart a bhith air a ruagadh, ghlac iad gach bata, speal is coran a bha laimh riutha, agus mar bheum-steibhe, ghabh iad ’nan deann-ruith sios an sliabh gu raon Allt a’ Bhonnaich agus thilg iad iad fhein an teis-meadhon a’ bhatail! Tha’n eachdraidh ag radh air do na Sasannaich so fhaicinn gun do shaoil iad gu robh feachd ur air tighinn a chum an sgrios—thainig crith-cath orra air fad ’s ghabh iad an ratreut, a’ fagail na buaidh-laraich aig Brus is a chuid ghaisgeach. Mas ann mar sin gu fior a thachair tha so fior cuideachd ann an cath sam bith—cha ghabh tomhas cur air de an toradh a leanas beartan dileas treubhantais. Cha suarach a’ chobhair as lugha a gheibhear an latha na h-eigin. ’S ann aig Ni Math fhein tha fios de a b’urrainn am prasgan ud a dheanamh aig Blar Allt a’ Bhonnaich’s gun aca ’nan doirn ach spealan is corain is steafagan an aghaidh marcaichean is fir-bogha Shasainn. Dh’fhaodte nach robh fios aca fhein! Ach tha so soilleir co dhiiibh — nach robh e ’nan nadur seasamh gun spairn air choireigin a dheanamh, ’s iad a’ faicinn an luchd-cinnidh an cunnart a bhith air an sgrios. Co dhiiibh, rinn iad an dicheall, ged bu bhochd e le cuid, agus le bhith deanamh sin dh’fhag iad comharradh bith-bhuan air eachdraidh na tire so, chuidich iad an duthaich gu buaidh, agus ghleidh iad na nithean sin a bha priseil dhaibh fhein is do gach al a bha ri teachd. Saoil a bheil teachdaireachd sam bith aca dhuinne is sinn, mar gum biodh, ’nar seasamh aig starsnaich an raoin far an do chuir iad sinn a chaoidh fo fhiachaibh dhaibh? Tha mi’n duil gu bheil. ’San latha a th’ann, cha namhaid bhorb a duthaich chein tha maoidheadh na nithean a tha priseil leinn a sgrios, ach naimhdean innleachdach ’nar tir fein— Cion-mothachaidh, cion-suim, agus eas-aontachd a measg clannaibh nan Gaidheal fhein. Mar tha lan fhios agaibh, tha moran d’ar luchd-cinnidh an diugh a tha a’ caoidh’s a’ gearan nach gabh Cor na Gaidhlig a leasachadh’s gu bheil ar dileab caillte. Ged nach cuir sinne ar n-aonta ri sin, ’s ann direach mar sin a dh’fhaodas e bhith, ma dh’eisdeas sinn ri gearan is ma leigeas sinn le eu-dochas bacadh a chur air an obair fheumail anns a bheil sinn an drasda an sas. Tha mise lan chinnteach, co dhiiibh, gu bheil miltean ann a theireadh gum bu mhasladh siorraidh a bhiodh ann a’ Ghaidhlig a leigeil bas agus gu bheil iad deonach oidhirp air choir-eigin a dheanamh chum sin a leasachadh. Tha’n cothrom sud aca a nis. Agus dhaibh-san ’s do luchd-ieanmhainn a’ Mhoid thugainn-sa dubhlan Allt a’ Bhpnnaich as ur—“ Thigeamaid agus deanamaid Mod na bliadhna so ’na buaidh-laraich air am bi cuimhn’ is cliu.” President’s Message After a lapse of ten years the Mod is back again in the Ancient Royal Burgh of Stirling — the Gateway, as they say, that opens out from the broad plains of the Lowlands to the bens and glens of the Highlands. As a meeting place of people from every corner of Scotland, and beyond, it could not be bettered. As well as that, Stirling, as you know, is but a stone’s throw, as it were, from the site of “ Bannockburn,” that famous field where the Scottish Army won renown and glory when they freed their country from the enemy yoke. Thus, I do not think there could be found a more suitable spot to unfurl the Gaelic banner at this particular time when we are trying to rouse concern for Gaeldpm’s cause at the Mod. I remember reading somewhere a strange explanation of how the Scottish host won a victory against overwhelming odds. They achieved this, the writer suggested, not merely by the strength and steadfastness of the warriors on the field but in no small way with the help received from others who were not at all counted as combatants. These were the Scottish camp followers — cooks, lackeys and even women servants — who were anxiously watching the struggle from the shelter of the battlements of the castle. They saw how the battle was going, and thinking that the Scottish army was in danger of being routed, they grasped every stick, scythe and hook at hand, and, like a torrent, they poured downhill to the field of Bannockburn, throwing themselves into the midst of the fight. At sight of which, the enemy, thinking this to be a new army, broke and fled, leaving the field to Bruce and his warriors. Just what these unarmed servants and womenfolk imagined they could do against the mailed cavalry and famous archers of Proud Edward’s army goodness only knows. Maybe they did not know themselves, but one thing was obvious —when they felt that their fellow countrymen were in danger of shameful defeat they simply could not stay out of the fight. Therefore, they did what they could, poor though their contribution at the time might have seemed—and in so doing, they left a tremendous mark on history, and saved not only Scotland’s Freedom but also the things that were priceless to themselves and the generations yet to come. In this year of grace, it is no alien foe from a foreign land that threatens us but a much more subtle enemy — Apathy, Indifference, and lack of unity among Gaels themselves. The issue which we face is not simply the revival of the economic welfare of the Highlands, but also the rescuing of our Highland heritage of Language, Culture, Literature and Song. There are many who shake their heads and mournfully declare that ours is a hopelessly lost cause, and so indeed it is if we listen to their complaints and let their despair dominate our thinking and actions. But just as surely as there were on this hill of Stirling a group of nameless folks, who felt that they could not stand unconcerned watching Scotland’s Freedom being destroyed without doing something courageous about it, so too there must be in our midst to-day, throughout and far beyond Scotland’s borders, folks who love this heritage of ours. I am convinced they are by no means resigned to see it, and all it stands for, in danger of being lost forever without doing something to rescue it. That opportunity is presented now. To them, and to all followers of the Mod, I would repeat afresh Bannockburn’s challenge of old and say, “Come and let us make this year’s Mod an occasion to be remembered with justifiable pride.” is e ’n ionnsachadh og an ionnsachadh boidheach Learning young is learning well Generation after generation in Scotland has handed down sound traditions—especially in husbandry.
