For more information, please contact the WRAP Team at: [email protected] warwick.ac.uk/lib-publications Virgil’s Carthaginians at A. 1.430-6: Cyclopes in Bees’ Clothing* Even before the Eclogues, Virgil-Tityrus had been used to shifting from small to large scales, fusing microcosm and macrocosm, exchanging miniatures and the gigantic.1 With a proverbial2 and at the same time programmatic line, E. 1.23 sic paruis componere magna solebam, ‘thus I used to compare small things with great,’ he announced the rise not only of an enlarged, augmented – i.e. Augustan – Rome, but also of the new poetics of comparison necessary to make her description possible: it is like ‘cypresses among the bending osiers’ that Rome ‘has reared her head so high among all other cities’ (E. 1.24-5 uerum haec tantum alias caput extulit urbes, / quantum lenta solent inter uiburna cupressi). Virgil asks for permission to employ such poetics of comparison in the fourth Georgic, after he has already ventured to associate the tiny bees of his narrative with gigantic, and yet Callimachean,3 Cyclopes forging weapons:4 * This paper originated from a 2008 undergraduate commentary thesis. Translations are Fairclough’s with minor changes. 2 For some watch over the gathering of food, and under fixed covenant labour in the fields; some, within the confines of their homes, lay down the narcissus’ tears and gluey gum from the tree bark as the first foundation of the comb, then hang aloft clinging wax; others lead out the full- grown young, the nation’s hope; others pack purest honey, and swell the cells with liquid nectar. To some it has fallen by lot to be sentries at the gates, and in turn they watch the rains and clouds of the sky, or take the load of incomers, or in martial array they drive the drones, a lazy herd, from the folds. All aglow is the work, and the fragrant honey is sweet with thyme. And as, when the Cyclopes in haste forge bolts from tough ore, some with oxhide bellows make the blasts come and go, others dip the hissing brass in the lake, while Aetna groans under the anvils laid upon her; they, with mighty force, now one, now another, raise their arms in measured cadence, and turn the iron with gripping tongs – even so, if we may compare small things with great, an inborn love of gain spurs on the Attic bees, each after its own office. As in a diptych which has been separated, both sides of this simile, tenor and vehicle,5 surface again through direct self-quotation in the texture of the Aeneid: the bees of G. 4.162-9 reappear almost uerbatim in a simile that compares the Carthaginians, hard at work building their city, to a swarm of busy bees working at their hive (A. 1.430-6); in symmetrical fashion, the same Cyclopes of the Georgics, self-quoted in Aeneid 8, exit the realm of similes and concretely enter epic narrative in order to build the shield of Aeneas (A. 8.449-53). Bees and Cyclopes bring into the epic the same poetics of comparison highlighted at the beginning of the Eclogues: they set in motion a game of abrupt changes of scale and perspective, from small to great, from great to small. Yet these sudden shifts are only activated by an intratextual memory: the Aeneid passages may appear quite different from what they seemed at first sight, once readers remember their original Georgic context. 5 To use Richards’ (1936) terms instead of H. Fraenkel’s (1921) wiesatz and sosatz. 3 Before homing in on the bee simile in Aeneid 1, which is the focus of this paper, it is worth mentioning that a similar technique is used by Virgil in Book 4, when the Trojans leaving Carthage appear similar, in the eyes of Dido, to a column of ants gathering food: ac uelut ingentem formicae farris aceruum cum populant hiemis memores tectoque reponunt, it nigrum campis agmen praedamque per herbas conuectant calle angusto; pars grandia trudunt obnixae frumenta umeris, pars agmina cogunt castigantque moras, opere omnis semita feruet. (A. 4.402-7) Even as when ants, mindful of winter, plunder a huge heap of corn and store it in their home; over the plain moves a black column, and through the grass they carry the spoil on a narrow track; some strain with their shoulders and heave on the huge grains, some close up the ranks and rebuke delay; all the path is aglow with work. It may come as a surprise that Virgil employs such miniaturization in order to convey the strong sense of menace that the Trojans are posing to Dido. Yet, if we turn to look at the intra- and intertextual connections of the passage, we may notice that these evoke further images, amplifying the scale and adding extra layers of threat to the scene. First, the memory of the Georgics, where ants are described as plundering the harvest (G. 1.185-6), helps in expressing Dido’s feelings that the Trojans have already been looting Carthage, as readers know well that their Roman descendants 4 will do.6 In addition, Servius tells us that the first half of line 404, it nigrum campis agmen, had been used by Ennius for elephants and by Accius for Indians. The intertext, far from being ‘the classic example of Virgil’s disregard from the original application of an Ennian phrase,’7 with an ‘almost comic effect,’8 dramatizes the scene by adding a military colouring to it, and emphasizes the danger that the Trojans represent for Dido.9 Moreover, if we champion the possibility that Ennius’ phrase was originally applied to Hannibal’s elephants,10 it suddenly lets the unsettling and traumatic memory of the Second Punic War crash into the fiction of the myth. As I am going to argue in this paper, an analogous shift is activated in the bee simile of Aeneid 1.430-6,11 where the intertextual memory of other epic bees lets the military sphere intrude into the picture, while the explicit self-quotation from Georgics 4 evokes the second half of that Georgic diptych, the simile of the Cyclopes forging weapons.

Despite their longevity, the members of the senatorial aristocracy faced an existential crisis following the Ostrogothic conquest of the Italian peninsula, when the forces of the Byzantine emperor Justinian I invaded their homeland to contest its ownership. Considering the role they played in the later Roman Empire, the disappearance of the Roman senatorial aristocracy following this conflict is a seminal event in the history of Italy and Western Europe, as well as Late Antiquity. Two explanations have been offered to explain the subsequent disappearance of the Roman senatorial aristocracy. The first involves a series of migrations, beginning before the Gothic War, from Italy to Constantinople, in which members of this body abandoned their homes and settled in the eastern capital.

All rights reserved. ii Reinventing Epic: Traditional Poetry and the Annales of Quintus Ennius John Francis Fisher Abstract The present scholarship views the Annales of Quintus Ennius as a hybrid of the Latin Saturnian and Greek hexameter traditions. This configuration overlooks the influence of a larger and older tradition of Italic verbal art which manifests itself in documents such as the prayers preserved in Cato’s De agricultura in Latin, the Iguvine Tables in Umbrian, and documents in other Italic languages including Oscan and South Picene. These documents are marked by three salient features: alliterative doubling figures, figurae etymologicae, and a pool of traditional phraseology which may be traced back to Proto-Italic, the reconstructed ancestor of the Italic languages. A close examination of the fragments of the Annales reveals that all three of these markers of Italic verbal art are integral parts of the diction the poem. Ennius famously remarked that he possessed three hearts, one Latin, one Greek and one Oscan, which the second century writer Aulus Gellius understands as ability to speak three languages.

I investigate digressions and excurses on mountains, rivers, and certain myths associated aetiologically with the land, and demonstrate how Stoic physics and cosmology – in particular the concepts of cosmic (dis)order, collapse, and conflagration – play a role in the way Lucan writes about the landscape in the context of a civil war poem. Building on previous analyses of the Bellum Civile that provide background on its literary context (Ahl, 1976), on Lucan’s poetic technique (Masters, 1992), and on landscape in Roman literature (Spencer, 2010), I approach Lucan’s depiction of the natural world by focusing on the mutual effect of humanity and landscape on each other. Thus, hardships posed by the land against characters like Caesar and Cato, gloomy and threatening atmospheres, and dangerous or unusual weather phenomena all have places in my study. I also explore how Lucan’s landscapes engage with the tropes of the locus amoenus or horridus (Schiesaro, 2006) and elements of the sublime (Day, 2013).

    Epic Anger, and the State of the (Roman) Soul in Virgil’s First Simile1 Kirk Freudenburg Yale University Virgil’s Aeneid begins with the goddess, Juno, both ‘still’ and ‘already’ angry: mene incepto desistere victam? ‘Am I to desist from what I’ve begun, beaten?’ Rivers of Trojan blood have been spilt, and Priam’s city has been looted and leveled. Extreme revenge has been exacted in the form of retaliatory rapes, forced enslavements, and so on. And yet somehow Juno thinks that her project of paying back the Trojans is not only not f nished, but only just begun.     VISIONS OF GRANDEUR: HANNIBAL’S GAZE AND EKPHRASIS IN THE PUNICA OF SILIUS ITALICUS by SEAN MATHIS (Under the Direction of Mario Erasmo) ABSTRACT This is a thesis about Silius Italicus, a Latin poet, who wrote his epic poem, the Punica, during the reign of the emperor Domitian. Silius wrote his epic poem in the period after Vergil’s Aeneid, and, like his literary contemporaries, was forced to contend with his poetic forebears in order to insert his own poem into the Latin epic tradition. Thus, the poet looks back to Vergil, his principal poetic predecessor, through his use of allusion, metaphor, and other poetic imagery. The poem is also historical in nature, covering the period leading up to the Second Punic War, and Silius necessarily looks back to his historical predecessors, notably the Latin historian Livy. Silius creates, within the Punica, an interesting allusive technique that allows for a literary dialogue between the historical and epic genres, thus guaranteeing his position as a successor to both Vergil and Livy.     "The Roman Republic in the Long Fourth Century" Princeton University: May 16-18, 2019 Abstracts and Participant Bios Cornell, Timothy. “Timaeus and the Romans” In the course of his long life (96 years according to one source) the Sicilian historian Timaeus of Tauromenium witnessed the most dramatic changes in the geopolitical structure of the Mediterranean world since the end of the Bronze Age: the decline of the Greek city-states, the conquests of Alexander the Great, the struggles of the Successors and the formation of the Hellenistic monarchies, the rise of Rome, and the outbreak of the first war between Rome and Carthage. His Histories in 38 books were centred on Sicily, but also covered Italy, Spain, the western Mediterranean islands, Gaul, and North Africa, and broke new ground in making the history of the ‘barbarian’ West known to the Greek world. Although his works are no longer extant, and survive only in fragments (quotations in later texts), his influence was pervasive. Timaeus was the first to carry out research on the Romans and their history, and to attempt to grasp their impact on the changing world of his time. Dionysius of Halicarnassus tells us that Timaeus wrote about the Romans twice, first in his general History, which covered the western Mediterranean from the earliest times to the death of Agathocles (289 BC) in thirty-eight books, and then again in a separate account of the wars between Pyrrhus and the Romans. It can be argued that in the former work Rome appeared in passing as one of the non-Greek communities of Italy, but that in the later monograph the city occupied centre stage.

Classical scholarship has long thought the nature of this relationship settled: in a surge of revolutionary force (so goes the story), Catullus and his poetic peers (the “neoterics”) broke violently away from Ennius and the dominant Ennian tradition, turning instead to the recherché Greek poetry of the Hellenistic period for their inspiration. My study complicates this dominant narrative: Ennius, I argue, had a foundational, positive influence on Catullus; Catullan poetry was evolutionary, not revolutionary at Rome. Chapter 1 sets the stage by redefining neotericism: this was a broad poetic movement that included, not just Catullus and his friends (“the neoteric school”), but a majority of the Latin poets writing c. 90-40 BCE. Neotericism, moreover, was an evolutionary phenomenon, an elaboration of second-century Latin poetry. Chapters 2-4 attend to specific Catullan poems that engage closely and allusively with Ennius. Chapter 2 shows how, in poem 64, Catullus reinvents Roman epic on the model left to him by Ennius. Chapter 3 takes up poem 116, which I read as a programmatic statement of its author’s Ennian-Callimachean poetics.

Littlewood, (Department of Greek and Roman Studies) Department Member iii Abstract Pliny’s Naturalis Historia is remarkable for its references to its sources throughout the text. There is little space between citations in the text, and Pliny provides much information in indirect statements. As a result, scholarship previously treated the work as a compilation. Pliny appeared to echo his sources, and so he provided a treasury of literary fragments which scholars attempted to extract. More recent scholarship has observed that Pliny’s use of the auctores is more involved than mere repetition. He criticizes, questions, compares, contrasts, and denies their statements. Similarly, recent scholarship, notably Doody, has demonstrated that identifying the Naturalis Historia as an encyclopedia is anachronistic, but both Doody and Naas make only passing remarks about the text being a historia. I argue in this thesis that the Naturalis Historia is a Roman historia and that Pliny’s references to his sources function within this historical project.
