Concebida por la Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, París, con la curaduría de su director, Hervé Chandès , y de su curadora asociada Grazia Quaroni, la muestra continúa su itinerancia hacia el Museu de Arte Moderna do Río de Janeiro de marzo a junio de 2014. Ron Mueck se inscribe en la tradición escultórica donde es representada la figura humana; aunque los temas, materiales y técnicas que utiliza lo convierten en un autor original, innovador y contemporáneo. Sus esculturas cautivan por el cambio de escala en las dimensiones y el realismo de los personajes, cuyos gestos expresan sutilmente situaciones llenas de vida y misterio. Una madre con su hijo, parejas jóvenes o adultas que oscilan entre la tensión y la calma y un hombre desnudo en un barco a la deriva son algunas de las imágenes que forman parte de la exposición. Obras que encierran una interioridad vital y profunda y, a la vez, expresan la perfección técnica del artista y su obsesión por la verdad. Mueck utiliza materiales como resina, fibra de vidrio, silicona y pinturas acrílicas para reproducir fielmente todos los detalles de la anatomía humana y construir esculturas que tematizan la vida y la muerte. Sus obras evocan un tipo de realismo que es, al mismo tiempo, íntimo y monumental. En diferentes escalas, el artista amplía o reduce extraordinariamente el tamaño de los cuerpos para crear situaciones que conmueven al espectador. “Sus viñetas escultóricas forman parte de situaciones que no tienen ni principio ni fin, sino solo intermedios inciertos, situaciones que no existen por fuera de sus encarnaciones individuales como objetos solitarios”, escribió Robert Storr para el catálogo de la exhibición. La exhibición, concebida por la Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain, con el apoyo de la Embajada de Francia en Argentina, cuenta con el auspicio de Tenaris – Organización Techint en Argentina y Brasil. Esa muestra se exhibe ahora íntegramente en Fundación PROA, Buenos Aires, y luego se presentará en el Museu do Arte Moderna de Río de Janeiro. Es la primera vez que la obra de Ron Mueck se exhibe en Sudamérica. Además de las seis importantes esculturas recientes, esta muestra agrega tres esculturas nunca antes exhibidas. También se dará a conocer una nueva película sobre la creación de Mueck realizada por Gautier Deblonde para la muestra de París. Al revelarnos al solitario artista en su proceso de trabajo, el film acentúa aún más la sensibilidad y la potencia de las esculturas de Mueck y pone de relieve la particular resonancia que tiene para nuestro tiempo. Una exhibición de Ron Mueck es un evento inusual. Mueck reside en Londres y sus muestras han sido aclamadas en todo el mundo, desde Japón, Australia y Nueva Zelanda, hasta México. Still Life (Naturaleza muerta, 2009) se enmarca dentro de la tradición clásica de ese género; Woman with Sticks (Mujer con ramas, 2008) se inclina hacia atrás bajo un atado de leña y nos recuerda los cuentos de brujas. Drift (Deriva, 2009) y Youth (Juventud, 2009) parecen inspiradas en titulares de los diarios, aunque también evocan obras del pasado. En otras esculturas de Ron Mueck, como el gran autorretrato dormido Mask II (Máscara II, 2002), los sueños eclosionan en la realidad. Su muy reservado proceso creativo se revela en la nueva película de Gautier Leblonde titulada Still Life: Ron Mueck at Work (Naturaleza muerta: Ron Mueck trabajando). Esta película fue producida para la exhibición en la Fundación Cartier. La más pequeña de las obras de dos personas de Mueck es la escultura Young Couple, que retrata a un hombre joven parado junto a una joven mujer, a la que Cuando los vi por primera vez en el estudio de Ron Mueck en el norte de Londres, parece estar confiándole algo. Lo más sorprendente en ellos —tal vez lo único al hombre y a la mujer les faltaba mucho para estar terminados. Pero de entrada sorprendente— es lo comunes que son.     VCJ12110.1177/1470357212462672Visual CommunicationCranny-Francis 4626722012 visual communication ARTICLE Sculpture as deconstruction: the aesthetic practice of Ron Mueck ANNE CRANNY-FRANCIS University of Technology, Sydney ABSTRACT This article analyses recent (2009) work of Australian-born, British-based hyperrealist sculptor, Ron Mueck, in order to show how it not only engages with a range of specific contemporary concerns and debates, but also operates as a visual deconstruction of Cartesian subjectivity. In order to identify Mueck’s deconstructive practice, the article uses a combination of multimodal, sensory and discourse analyses to situate Mueck’s work discur- sively and institutionally, and to explore the ways in which it provokes reader engagement. As the author identifies, each of the works – Youth, Still life and Drift – addresses specific issues and they all provoke a self-reflexive engagement that brings together all aspects of viewer engagement (sen- sory, emotional, intellectual, spiritual), challenging the mind/body dichotomy that characterizes the Cartesian subject. KEYWORDS being • discursive • intertextuality • meaning • sculpture • sensory • subjectivity • touch • visuality This article begins by locating the discourses within which Mueck’s work is embedded, which influence viewers’ responses to the sculptures and the mean- ings that they generate. It then considers one major characteristic of Mueck’s sculptures – the contradiction between their hyperrealist surface and non-life size – and relates this specifically to the works’ deconstructive practice. This is followed by an analysis of the three new works from 2009 – Youth, Still life and Drift – that were shown in the Mueck exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria (2010). The analysis discusses both specific meanings of each of these works and the way each contributes to Mueck’s deconstructive practice.
