Anthropocene Entanglements Anthropocene Entanglements: The Novum, Policy, and Environment in Science Fiction by Wyndham, Atwood, and Liu by Jeremy Ross Strong A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies of The University of Manitoba in partial fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of English, Theatre, Film, and Media The University of Manitoba Winnipeg Copyright © 2020 Jeremy Ross Strong Abstract This dissertation argues that Darko Suvin’s proposed literary device unique to science fiction, “the novum”, is entangled with national state policy and environmental politics, and that up to now this has not been studied with sustained focus. I propose that the emergent sub-genre cli-fi is really just the distillation of ongoing concerns about the compounding problems of life in the Anthropocene that have long been present in much science fiction. By exploring the relationship between the novums of science fiction novels and national state policies the project reveals the unique perspectives the science fiction genre offers for addressing the Anthropocene. I put forward the notion of the “national political imaginary” as a concept useful in understanding temporary landscapes of thought that include political discourse and artistic production alike. I argue that the novum helps reveal how the subtext and themes within the fiction and the social forces driving the policy are connected through an axis of environmental concern. The case studies span three distinct time periods in the UK, Canada, and China connecting geo-political, bio-cultural, and socio-political policies to novels by John Wyndham, Margaret Atwood, and Cixin Liu respectively. Adopting a New Historicist approach, the chapters first explain the historical conditions and particular cultural and national elements that give rise to each policy, before undertaking close readings of the novels. The close readings explore the environmental subtext in the novels that is revealed through each novum’s function as a conduit to each respective national state policy. Ultimately finding the novum to have more significant political dimensions than previously theorized, and that it is resonant with Fredric Jameson’s theory of the political unconscious, the project serves as a bridge between policy studies and literary studies, potentially opening new dialogical possibilities for future scholars. ii Acknowledgements I could not have written this dissertation without financial support from Canada Research Chair Dr. Diana Brydon. Ellison* Harvard Forest, Harvard University, 324 North Main Street, Petersham, Massachusetts, 01366, USA Abstract Carnivorous plants are pure sit-and-wait predators: they remain rooted to a single location and depend on the abundance and movement of their prey to obtain nutrients required for growth and reproduction. Yet carnivorous plants exhibit phenotypically plastic responses to prey availability that parallel those of non-carnivorous plants to changes in light levels or soil-nutrient concentrations. The latter have been considered to be foraging behaviors, but the former have not. Here, I review aspects of foraging theory that can be profitably applied to carnivorous plants considered as sit-and-wait predators. A discussion of different strategies by which carnivorous plants attract, capture, kill, and digest prey, and subsequently acquire nutrients from them suggests that optimal foraging theory can be applied to carnivorous plants as easily as it has been applied to animals. Carnivorous plants can vary their production, placement, and types of traps; switch between capturing nutrients from leaf-derived traps and roots; temporarily activate traps in response to external cues; or cease trap production altogether. Future research on foraging strategies by carnivorous plants will yield new insights into the physiology and ecology of what Darwin called “the most wonderful plants in the world”. At the same time, inclusion of carnivorous plants into models of animal foraging behavior could lead to the development of a more general and taxonomically inclusive foraging theory.

These works, referred to as “climate fiction” or “cli-fi,” explore humanity’s connection to- and impact upon Earth by asking questions such as: what will human and nonhuman communities look like after sea-level rise, desertification, and biodiversity loss remap our planet?; how might species evolve in response to ecological collapse?; what affects— melancholy, despair, hope—will eulogize a lost home-world? Reading cli-fi novels, short stories, poetry, and film, this course will situate our texts within the Environmental Humanities, an interdisciplinary field that combines scientific and cultural discourses about the environment with humanistic concerns for social justice. Working through the narrative conventions of the utopian, dystopian, and apocalyptic genres, we will ask how cli- fi not only narrates impending disaster on a global scale but also strives to imagine a more just future, one that combines environmentalism and social equality. These texts will be paired with excerpts from philosophical and ecocritical writings which will aid our development of the humanistic methodologies needed to analyze and appreciate this new genre.     The Chrysalids Introduction to the Author John Wyndham was born in England, on July 10, 1903. When he was growing up, he went to a series of boarding schools because his parents were separated. He then attended an advanced co- educational school until he reached the age of eighteen. After he left school, Wyndham studied farming for a while, then "crammed" to write the examinations for Oxford University. Finally, in 1929, Wyndham picked up a copy of an American magazine called Amazing Stories, and became very interested in science fiction. Not long after that a series of stories under the name of John Beynon began to appear in Amazing Stories, and in another publication called Wonder Stories. He wrote English science fiction stories under the names "John Beynon Harris," "John Beynon," and "Lucas Parkes," as well as John Wyndham. By 1937, he was being called the best living British science fiction writer. Wyndham's work in science fiction is interesting in its emphasis. He does not generally concentrate on amusing the reader with strange inventions of technology from a bewildering future. The settings he employs for the future are logical, identifiable extensions of the world of today. His consuming interest lies in speculation about human nature and human behaviour. This would account for his attention to customs and moral codes displayed in the different societies in his books. Thus, time and again he points out the hypocrisy, bigotry and ignorance which are so often a part of our social life, and he stresses that changing conditions demand new ways, new customs and new codes of conduct.

It also focuses on the story of a young woman trying to change her life, and a deeply humane account of working people responding to the local effects of the global climate crisis. Kingsolver has carved a career from examining social issues in her novels, from economic inequality to environmentalism. Flight Behaviour portrays the inducement and consequences of climate change that forms the butterfly effect. During the 19th Century, the practice of science became professionalized and institutionalized, which continues to today. So, upon this stage in the 19th Century strode the “Mother of Science Fiction,” Mary Shelley (1797- 1851), whose Frankenstein of 1818 electrified the world! The promotion of the 1931 film featured a supply of smelling salts in theatre lobbies for those who might swoon! The “Co-Father of Science Fiction” was H. G. Welles (1866-1946), whose War of the Worlds of 1898, as adapted on radio by Orson Wells on Halloween, 1938, sparked a mini-panic of alien invasion terror! His The Time Machine of 1895 and The Invisible Man of 1897 became best sellers. Hints of our future were depicted by aircraft, tanks, space and time travel, nuclear weapons, satellite television, and the World-Wide Web. Page Two The other “Co-Father of Science Fiction” was the commercially-successful French author Jules Verne (1828-1905). I remember watching, with wonder, the 1954 Disney film of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea, of 1870. And I remember riding on the ride in Disneyland in California in the 1950’s. The 1959 film of Journey To The Center Of The Earth, starring James Mason and an unknown Pat Boone, featured an epic battle of dinosaurs, joining Arthur Conan Doyle’s The Lost World, of 1912, and the 1993 film Jurassic Park with dinosaur themes in science fiction.

Unlike the savaGely satirical approaches of other Left plays around the same time, such as Brenton and David Hare’s Pravda and Caryl Churchill’s Serious Money (both sardonic travesties of the riGht-winG press and the City of London in Thatcher’s Britain) Greenland attempts to reconstruct a utopian future. The second act of Greenland partially resembles a utopian space usually encountered in a conventional utopian narrative, and in doinG so, has led some commentators to dismiss the play as tedious and lackinG in dramatic interest. Its lack of conflict and the contentment of its inhabitants have led to it being described as static and dull. This interpretation has brouGht with it a readinG that concurs with the character, Severan-Severan, whose view is that misery and sufferinG are essential to the human condition and that liberation is a living death. However, this approach neglects a more complex engagement with utopia that can be traced in the play. Spectators of the play - along with the non-utopian character, Joan - respond to Greenland in a way that can be illuminated by Frederic Jameson’s idea of the ‘terror of obliteration’. This paper will explore ways in which Greenland exposes psycho-political barriers to utopia, barriers that frame the spectator’s view of the play, and it will also reveal ways in which bridGes to utopia are constantly at stake.

Bekkevold http://www.duo.uio.no/ Trykk: Reprosentralen, Universitetet i Oslo IV Sammendrag Pushwagner blir ofte omtalt som popkunstner og Norges svar på Andy Warhol (1923-1987) og Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997). Sammenligningen begrunnes med hans benyttelse av tegneserieestetikk. Med stiliserte former og fargeflater. Dette er en gjenkjennende karakteristikk av den amerikanske popkunsten klisjéfylte tegneserieuttrykk. Denne oppfatningen nevnes ofte i en bisetning uten at det foreligger noen kunsthistorisk analyse som har undersøkt dette. Pushwagner samarbeidet med den norske forfatteren Axel Jensen (1932- 2002) på 1960-tallet, og sammen skapte de et tegneserieunivers som skulle bli grunnlaget for Pushwagners kunstnerskap. På 1970-tallet og 1980-tallet arbeidet de med flere utkast og upubliserte bokprosjekter som ble utviklet til billedromanen Soft City, silketrykkserien En dag i familien Manns liv og malerifrisen Apokalypse. I denne avhandlingen søker jeg svar på hvordan Pushwagner benytter seg av tegenserieestetikken i sitt kunstuttrykk. Hva slags tradisjon benyttes i hans verk? Og kan man med rette karakterisere Pushwagner som popkunstner? Problemstillingene er verksorientert, og jeg tar utgangspunkt i maleriet Jobkill (1990), men det vil bli trukket paralleller til andre verk av kunstneren. I oppgavens tolkningsdel vil jeg trekke inn komparativt materiale fra popkunsten. V VI VII Forord I 2010-2012 hadde jeg gleden av å jobbe i et av Norges nyoppstartede gallerier, Galleri Pushwagner.
