Dear Friends

September seems to have come around so quickly! The long summer holiday is over and children are returning to school; college and university terms will begin in earnest very soon.

Some of our children will be starting new schools, others will be moving up into new classes with a new teacher. There will be the very young who are starting nursery and school for the very first time. I am sure that some of them will be feeling nervous, excited, and maybe a little fearful (and that’s just the teachers!).

Moving on is a part of life, we cannot and indeed we should not, stand still. We may want things to stay as they are but in reality we know that we have to go forward.

I remember when my daughters were leaving home for the first time, I desperately wanted to hold back time because nothing would ever be the same again for any of us. I wanted to keep them close and safe but I realised that to do that would be very selfish on my part. I knew that in order for them to grow and flourish they had to fly the nest and begin to stand on their own two feet, move on to new places, new experiences and new challenges, which they both did very well as it happens.

It is interesting to note that when baby birds leave the nest, which some do even before they can fly properly, their parents are there watching over them and making sure that they are fed and don’t come to any harm. So it is with all animals, they protect their young with ferocious love and care.

1

Which reminds me of a passage from the bible; from Isaiah Chapter 40 verse 11, which says;

“He (God) tends His flock like a Shepherd, He takes the lambs in His arms and gently leads those that have young”, which is a lovely promise for us human beings that God will always be there to watch over us and keep us in His care wherever we are. Also Psalm 23 speaks of a loving God who watches over us even at the darkest and most difficult times of our lives.

As we begin a new term, a new beginning, let us pray for all our local schools, staff and pupils, our colleges and universities, especially those young people leaving home for the first time. That they might feel supported and uplifted by our thoughts and prayers. Every blessing

Selection of a new Vicar

We are pleased to report that we have chosen a shortlist of three applicants to be invited for interview for the post of Vicar of Honley with Brockholes. These will take place in the Parish on Monday 3rd September and will involve the Archdeacon Ven. Dr Anne Dawtry, the Patron The Rev Dennis Handley (Vicar of Almondbury) and the four churchwardens from the Parish. Because the Bishop is required to attend the House of Lords, the interview panel has been commissioned to recommend a maximum of two of the applicants to Bishop Stephen who along with the Archdeacon will interview them later that week when a final decision will be made. During the Monday morning the candidates will be given a tour of the parish, the churches and the Vicarage.

They have been invited to St George’s on Sunday 2nd September for an informal meeting with Parishioners at 4.00 pm. Light refreshments will be available.

This will be followed by Parish Eucharist at 6.30pm at St Mary’s. The Archdeacon will celebrate and Dean Henry will be the preacher. Refreshments will be available after the service when there will be an opportunity to meet the candidates informally. (These sessions in church are not part of the interview process nor for interrogation!).

Please pray for God’s guidance for the churchwardens and ask Him to prepare the heart and mind of our next incumbent.

John Dean Margaret Kenworthy Clive Waind Rosalind Watt Churchwardens Fruit Crops

I often hear of people who have fruit trees but who, due to lack of time or ability, are unable to pick the ripened fruit. As this season is now approaching I am willing to pick unwanted fruit and then sell it at church or elsewhere, the proceeds to go to church funds. Please let me know if you think I could do this for you, tel 662209.

Don’t Wait To Be Asked

It is now some time since we asked everyone formally to review their regular giving. Time moves on, circumstances change. If you want to increase your giving at any time please go ahead – you do not have to let us know or wait to be asked.

Simply contact your bank direct or continue using your existing envelopes. You do not need to sign a new Gift Aid declaration because your existing one is still valid

Remember using the Offertory Plate to increase your giving may be a missed opportunity. If you do not use a yellow envelope your giving will not qualify for Gift Aid.

For those who are still giving via the Offertory Plate – please consider using weekly envelopes or, better still, your bank.

To give using your bank, you complete a Standing Order Form with whatever amount or frequency of transfer you choose (monthly, quarterly or annually).

If you are a taxpayer, by signing one simple Gift Aid Declaration the Parish can reclaim the tax you have already paid on your giving - at no extra cost to you. You can cancel this at any time if your circumstances change.

Please ask and we will be happy to help on any aspect of giving.

HONLEY NEWS

Report on St Mary’s DCC held on 17th July

Eleven members were present when Chairman Clive Waind opened the meeting with a prayer. The minutes of the June meeting were approved. Under Matters Arising the new Welcome Cards for visitors, sale of part of the Vicarage garden, redecoration of the Vicarage, new insurance policy for the church and Parish Room, repairs to the church tower and reordering of the church were all reported on with updates. One item which is causing some concern is the need to appoint a Health and Safety Officer to keep an eye on our buildings. It was agreed that the vacancy should be publicised via the pew sheet and magazine.

Treasurer Clive Green was unable to be present but had left the figures for the first half of the year with the observation that a break- even situation for the whole year was still forecast. A legacy of £1,000 had been received.

Reports from the Transformational Planning groups included the following:

 Prayer & Spirituality - Angeline Baker stressed the need for more members. The group is investigating provision of a suitable Bible Study guide of daily readings.  Finance & Property Group - the Secretary reported it was agreed to put into effect the repairs for which sponsorship money had been provided as a result of the recent appeal. Also concern about the state of the church roof has produced plans to arrange for a regular inspection of this area three times a year.  Pastoral Care Group - Pat Green reported that the group was reaching the end of its brief outlined in the Transformational Plan. Any revision and the arrival of a new incumbent may give rise to new initiatives. She asked for a notice board to be provided in the Prayer Corner.  Community & Outreach Group - were planning a Musical Afternoon for Sunday, October 14th as reported by Bill Kemp.

8

 Worship Planning Group - had not met since the last DCC meeting in June.

Under Correspondence two complaints had been received from ‘neighbours’ of the Vicarage expressing concern about the number of self-set trees growing up near the boundary walls and invasion of next-door property by ivy. The nature and timing of possible action was discussed with some concern expressed as to whether the cost of any remedial work was a diocesan rather than a church matter. This will be investigated.

Under Any Other Business Pat Green explained that her authorisation as Lay Pastoral Minister expires in August. She wishes to revise her commitment and end her responsibility for arranging baptisms but will carry on until the wishes of the new Vicar are known. This situation was approved by the DCC with thanks to Pat for her work over the past 5 years.

Clive Waind reported a shortage of people willing to act as Crucifers and it was agreed that an appeal for volunteer should be made via the pew sheet and magazine. Cliff Green, DCC Secretary

Songs of Praise

A special Songs of Praise event, organised by Honley Churches Together to coincide with ‘Honley Feast’ is to be held on Sunday 23rd September.

Meet in the Market Place at 3.30 pm, then move to St Mary’s Church for a service at 4.00 pm. The Hand Chimes will be performing and Honley Band will be taking part in the service. Refreshments will be served afterwards in the Parish Room.

If anyone is able to provide homemade cakes, buns or biscuits for the afternoon tea, please see John Adams as soon as possible.

Clive Waind and John Adams Candle holder

The candle holder is now in use and is already being well used. In our initial planning, it had been our intention to put it in the prayer corner which seemed the logical place. However, when we tried it out it became clear that, actually, the more suitable place for it was in the Lady Chapel. This is partly out of safety concerns but mostly because, if anyone is using it after the services, that corner tends, inevitably, to be a thoroughfare with people going to and fro to the vestries, toilets etc. It is far quieter in the Lady Chapel where people can pray undisturbed.

We would respectfully ask parents to be aware of this and to ensure that their children do not go into that area after the service on a Sunday morning so that people can go there and not be disturbed in their quiet prayer.

Do please use the candle holder and if anyone has any remarks on its use, please don’t hesitate to let us know. The Churchwardens Crucifers

Vacancies still exist - please apply to the Churchwardens.

Moving on

The following letter has been received from Doreen Maude’s cousin:

I am writing to inform you that Doreen has completed 2 weeks of respite care at the Coppice Lodge Care Home, 117, Coppice Road, Arnold, Nottingham NG5 7GS and she appears to have settled in well so she is taking up permanent residence there immediately.

The home is in the same group as Greenacres Care Home in Meltham and according to Doreen it is like a 5 star hotel !

I shall be grateful if you would let her friends at Honley Church know of her change of address for if any of them should wish to contact her and also let the Parish know it is with regret and sadness that she has had to leave Honley but it is for her own wellbeing and Nottingham makes her near to her niece and nephews who are her only family.

May I thank Pat Green and others from the church for visiting her over the past months – Maureen and I certainly have appreciated this. Kind regards

We raised £105 for the Flood Victims of Calder Valley. Thank you for your generosity.

The Diocesan Service and Flower Festival was a wonderful event. The Revd Canon Simon Moor led the service to a packed Huddersfield Parish Church. It was attended by the Venerable Anne Dawtry, Rosemary Kempsell, World Wide President of the Mothers’ Union, Monica Dodds, Wakefield Diocesan President, and civic dignitaries from Barnsley, Calderdale, and Wakefield. With Jean as organist and Pat guiding the Mayor and Mayoress of Kirklees, Andrea helping to produce the Almondbury Deanery flower display and other members in attendance, we did our Branch proud. A copy of the service sheet is on the notice board in the Parish Room together with photographs of the flowers.

Many thanks to Jennie and Jean for arranging the Summer Lunch at the Travellers Rest, Upper Hopton. We enjoyed an excellent meal and a big thank you to those who provided the transport.

Monday, 3rd September between 4.00 - 4.30 pm is our Mothers’ Union “WAVE OF PRAYER”. From 1st - 5th September Wakefield Diocese is committed to praying for our Link Dioceses of Adelaide, The Murray and Willochra in Australia, Tarime in Tanzania, Kumi, Karamoja and Soroti in Uganda and Tamale in West Africa. Please come and join us in Church for the service.

We are hoping everyone will support our Coffee Morning on Wednesday 5th September 9.30 am - 12 noon. The money raised will be donated to the MU project which this year is the “Family Life Programmes in Uganda”. If you can help in anyway please speak to one of the Committee. There will be a warm welcome for everyone and the usual stalls and raffle.

The “Grub on No Grant” booklet, a joint working project by the Dicoese MU, and University Chaplaincy Team contains recipes for cheap and healthy meals, designed for students with limited cooking experience. 12

On Monday September 17th, Mothers’ Union members will be attending the university “Freshers’ Fayre”, to give students a copy of the booklet and a taster of the recipes. More volunteers are needed on the day, so if anyone is interested, please see Andrea.

At our October Meeting we welcome Alice Moore, a member of our choir, to talk about her recent trip to Peru.

Music for a Summer’s Evening – 26 July 2012

In this unpredictable summer the sun shone as friends and music lovers from around the district met in church for the concert given by Max Kenworthy and Jonny Davies. Their programme was well balanced. In the first half Max played Bach’s Toccata and Fugue on the organ before showing his dexterity on the piano as he and Jonny played Handel’s Violin Sonata in F major and the Allegro from Beethoven’s Violin Sonata in F major. After the interval Max played two more organ solos – Will o’ the Wisp by G B Nevin and Serenade for organ by Derek Bourgeois. Accompanied by Max, Jonny sang Tradewinds by Frederick Keel, Drake’s Drum from Stanford’s Songs of the Seas and John Ireland’s Sea Fever. The evening closed with a selection of jazz for piano, violin and double bass. Roger joined Jonny and Max in a delightful close to the concert. The obvious enjoyment of these two talented musicians in their music-making together was apparent to the audience who left with smiles on their faces after a perfect evening. Thank you Max, Jonny and Roger for sharing your talents with us.

Jean Spencer RIP

It is with sadness we mourn the sudden death of Jean. She has been a regular worshipper as St George’s and after her retirement as Deputy Head of Brockholes School, took on a variety of tasks in the Church. She served on the DCC and was for a time Assistant Treasurer. She and her late husband Gordon did Sidesman Duty together for some years. They also travelled with other church member on a Diocesan Pilgrimage to the Holy Land.

Recently she opened her much loved garden for the Open Gardens event which formed part of the celebrations towards St George’s 150th Anniversary in 2013. She was also involved in planning of the Flower Festival in May 2013.

We offer out condolences to Rachel and Richard, John and Julie and grandchildren Thomas, David, Timothy and Sarah.

Warning of ‘Phone – Hacking Scam

West Trading Standards is warning consumers to be extra wary of ‘phone scams from would be computer hackers. Over recent weeks the service has received a steady stream of complaints involving suspicious calls from overseas phone numbers from an unidentified source.

The scam is started by a ‘phone call to an unsuspecting householder. The caller claims to be from an online software or internet provider and that they have identified a problem with the householder’s computer or internet connection. The scammer then attempts to obtain user’s account details by saying that in order to rectify the fault they will need to perform some software upgrades. The intention is to gain access to secure information such as bank details that would normally be password protected.

Trading Standards advice is to be wary of any unsolicited phone calls of this nature and ignore any requests for confidential information such as passwords or user names. Always report the matter to Trading Standards and tell the caller of this.

Graham Hebblethwaite, Chief Officer of Trading Standards, said, “Although the vast majority of people will see this type of scam for exactly what it is, some may well be panicked into believing their computer has picked up a serious computer virus which needs urgent attention. The scammers work on the basis that they may have to contact many people to find just one victim, but often when they do their unscrupulous efforts pay off.”

If you feel that you have fallen victim of a scam you can contact Action Fraud, the UK’s national fraud reporting centre on 0300 1232040, or alternatively report the matter to Trading Standards by contacting the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline: 0845 404 05 06. To make a consumer complaint contact the Citizens Advice Consumer Helpline on 08454 04 05 06. Submitted by Liz Cummings 20

Retail Therapy

What is this retail therapy I’ve heard so much about? It’s supposed to cheer you up they say so I really must find out.

It probably won’t work for me - a canny Yorkshire lass. It takes a lot to tempt me into parting from my brass.

I’ll give it a try, and take a look at all the latest fashion, but I doubt if I’ll find anything that I can spend my cash on.

What should I buy? I’ve lots of clothes and don’t need any more. The drawers are full and there’s no space behind the wardrobe door.

I’ll have to have a clear out soon and what will happen then? I’ll try on all the clothes in turn and put them back again.

I’ve thought about this therapy and all that it incurs and decided that I am better off with money in my purse.

Praying for a lost generation

Your parents might have been Christians, in which case there is a reasonable possibility that your grandparents were, too. For many families in the UK this solid history of Christian belief and practice could go back many generations. But going forward – is it the same? Probably not.

Society is changing fast. One feature of the current age is a rapid reduction in the number of young people continuing in the Christian faith. In many families, this is the first break away from Christianity for several generations. What are we going to do about it?

If your child was being kept hostage by some evil gang you wouldn’t rest until your child is safely restored. But today, we have a generation of children who have been wooed away by the secular spirit of the age and are being held fast, away from everything Christian. Yet we feel powerless, or even disinclined, to do anything.

There will be many reasons why our children are leaving the church. Church can seem boring and irrelevant, especially if the older generation is unwilling to embrace change needed to relate to young people. Perhaps children note the nominal and ineffective nature of our own faith, concluding that there is no evidence of any spiritual power in our lives. So it is really Christianity that they are rejecting or a watered-down, ineffectual church?

At least, we can pray for them. But, as Billy Graham says, “Prayer is not the least you can do for someone, prayer is the MOST you can do for someone.” He also says, “Prayer is the mightiest force in the world.”

So this autumn, remember the young people who belong to our church’s families, whether they profess any faith of not. Pray for each and every one of them, for their protection and for their welfare. They are preparing to enter a highly complex, highly troubled society, and need our love and support.

Flying bishop

The new Bishop wanted a bird’s eye view of his new diocese, so he had an idea. He rang his local airport to charter a flight. He was told a twin engine plane would be waiting for him at the airport. Arriving at the airfield, the bishop spotted a plane warming up outside a hanger. He jumped in, slammed the door shut, and shouted, "Let's go!"

At once the pilot taxied out, swung the plane into the wind and took off. Once in the air, the bishop spent several minutes enjoying the views, and looking for local landmarks. Finally he instructed the pilot, "Fly down the valley now and make low passes so I can take pictures of some of the best of the old parish churches."

"Why?" asked the pilot. "Because I'm the new bishop,” he replied happily, adjusting his camera, “and I want some good aerial views of my diocese.”

The pilot was strangely silent for a moment. Finally he stammered, "So, what you're telling me, is . . you're NOT my flight instructor?"
