Site Name: Holme House Grasslands Location: 1 km east of New Mill Date of Survey: 19 September 2002 Surveyor: J North Grid Reference: SE 174084 1:10 000 Map: SE 10 NE Planning Authority: Kirklees MC Area: 0.8 Ha Natural Area: Coal Measures

NVC Types Present: MG5c, MG9, U4. Keywords: Neutral grassland; Acid grassland. Protected Species: No Site Description

Holme House grasslands are enclosed grasslands immediately to the south of the A635 Penistone Road. This road forms the northern boundary, while other boundaries are drystone walls. The site contains a mixture of neutral and acid grasslands, with a central area of wet grassland.

Most of the grassland is neutral and species rich. Grasses present include crested dog’s-tail, Cynosurus cristatus , common bent, Agrostis capillaris, heath grass, Danthonia decumbens , cock’s- foot, Dactylis glomerata , sweet vernal grass, Anthoxanthum odoratum and quaking grass, Briza media . The herb flora is diverse, with bird’s-foot trefoil, Lotus corniculatus , abundant Trifolium species, harebell, Campanula rotundifolia , knapweed, Centaurea nigra , pignut, Conopodium majus , burnet saxifrage, Pimpinella saxifraga, oxeye daisy, Leucanthemum vulgare , selfheal, creeping buttercup, Ranunculus repens , Prunella vulgaris, adder’s tongue, Ophioglossum vulgatum and betony, Stachys officinalis . This is an example of the MG5c community.

There is a small area of acid grassland, with heath bedstraw, Galium saxatile, tormentil, Potentilla erecta , sheep’s fescue, Festuca ovina, mat grass, Nardus stricta , wavy hair-grass, Deschampsia flexuosa , cat’s-ear, Hypochaeris radicata , field wood-rush, Luzula campestris and sheep’s sorrel, Rumex acetosella . This is an example of the U4 community.

There are scattered shrubs of hawthorn, Crataegus monogyna and dog rose, Rosa canina with patches of bramble, Rubus fruticosus agg., throughout the site.

There is a wet area running through the centre of the site. This area supports a wet grassland community with abundant Yorkshire fog, Holcus lanatus and tufted hair-grass, Deschampsia cespitosa with smooth-stalked sedge, Carex laevigata , marsh thistle, Cirsium palustre , soft rush, Juncus effusus , jointed rush, J. articulatus , brooklime, Veronica beccabunga , yellow pimpernel, Lysimachia nemorum and bog stitchwort, Stellaria uliginosa . This is an excellent example of the MG9 community.

Supported by the five West Yorkshire district authorities of Bradford . Calderdale . Kirklees . Leeds . Wakefield

Ecological Evaluation

Holme House Grasslands are an excellent example of species-rich neutral grasslands, including MG5 indicative of old hay meadows and supporting incommon species including Ophioglossum vulgare and Pimpinella saxifraga .

Site Management

The site is cattle-grazed and this should continue as the grasslands are in excellent condition.

Site Name: Morton Wood Location: West of Hepworth Date of Survey: 19 September 2002 Surveyor: J North Grid Reference: SE 158065 1:10 000 Map: SE 10 NE Planning Authority: Kirklees M C Area: 13 Ha Natural Area: Coal Measures

NVC Types Present: W7, W10a, W10e, W16a, W16b. Keywords: Broadleaved semi-natural woodland; Acidic flush; Open water; Running water. Protected Species: Yes Ancient Woodland: Yes RIGS: No

Supported by the five West Yorkshire district authorities of Bradford . Calderdale . Kirklees . Leeds . Wakefield

Site Description

Morton Wood lies on the steep valley sides of Dean Dike, west of Hepworth village. The wood is bounded by drystone walls and fences all around and is surrounded by pasture land.

This woodland can be sub-divided into 3 main communities. The largest is a good example of W10. There is a high canopy of sessile oak, Quercus robur, sycamore, Acer pseudoplatanus, , silver birch, Betula pendula and downy birch, B. pubescens , with lesser amounts of rowan, Sorbus aucuparia and wych elm, Ulmus glabra. Holly, Ilex aquifolium , hawthorn, Crataegus monogyna and hazel, Corylus avellana form a patchy shrub layer together with regenerating canopy species. Parts of the herb layer are relatively species poor with a carpet of creeping soft-grass, Holcus mollis, bluebell, Hyacinthoides non-scripta, bracken, Pteridium aquilinum, bramble, Rubus fruticosus agg., and broad buckler-fern, Dryopteris dilatata . This is typical of W10a. There are areas where the herb layer is more diverse, particularly along the streamside with, in addition to the above, pink purslane, sibirica, great wood-rush, Luzula sylvatica, wood sorrel, Oxalis acetosella, yellow archangel, Lamiastrum galeobdolon, herb Robert, Geranium robertianum, greater stitchwort, Stellaria holostea and wood anemone, Anemone nemorosa . This latter type is typical of W10e.

The steeper slopes and southern end of the wood support the W16 community, with a lower growing canopy of Quercus robur, Q. petraea, Betula spp and Sorbus aucuparia and locally abundant beech, Fagus sylvatica. Ilex aquifolium is the main shrub here, with occasional Corylus avellana . All canopy species are again, regenerating well. The W16 community can be further divided. Some areas are relatively species poor being dominated by wavy hair-grass, Deschampsia flexuosa with Pteridium aquilinum, heath bedstraw, Galium saxatile and locally frequent common cow-wheat, Melampyrum pratense . This is typical of the W16a sub-community. Other areas have a more heathy herb layer with abundant bilberry, Vaccinium myrtillus , heather, Calluna vulgaris and the less common species cowberry, Vaccinium vitis-idaea . Other species include tormentil, Potentilla erecta, Dryopteris dilatata and common bent, Agrostis capillaris . This is an excellent example of W16b.

The other woodland community, W7, lies on seepage lines and on the streamside. Alder, Alnus glutinosa dominates the canopy here, with some Corylus avellana and Sorbus aucuparia . These overlay a wet herb layer supporting species such as marsh thistle, Cirsium palustre, marsh marigold, Caltha palustris, smooth-stalked sedge, Carex laevigata, opposite-leaved golden saxifrage, oppositifolium, yellow pimpernel, Lysimachia nemorum, meadowsweet, Filipendula ulmaria and valerian, Valeriana officinalis . This is typical of the W7b sub-community.

In addition to the woodland communities, there is an artificial pond at the southern end. This is surrounded by a herb rich grassland, with some affinities with MG5, although clearly planted and landscaped and which grades into scrub. Species here include Potentilla erecta, devil’s-bit scabious, Succisa pratensis and bird’s-foot trefoil, Lotus corniculatus .

Ecological Evaluation

Morton Wood is an excellent example of an oak/birch woodland with the upland W16 type on upper slopes and lowland W10 type on deeper soils along the valley sides. Associated with this are diverse streamside flushes and wet woodland communities. The diversity value of the site is increased by the presence of open water and grassland communities.

The herb layer is diverse in places and includes some ancient woodland indicators, such as Lamiastrum galeobdolon and Anemone nemorosa . The presence of less common species such as Melampyrum pratense, Vaccinium vitis-idaea and Carex laevigata adds further rarity value to the site.

There is good regeneration of the canopy species and a significant amount of dead wood.

Site Management

There are a number of footpaths throughout this woodland, although only the Kirklees Way is a public right of way. The southern end of the wood is managed for wildlife by the owner.

In terms of woodland management it would be of benefit to thin out some of the Fagus sylvatica

Site Description

Yateholme Reservoirs & Plantations is a large site, which includes the reservoirs of Brownhill, Ramsden, Riding Wood and Yateholme, together with surrounding plantations, grassland and heathland. The site lies to the south of Holmbridge and stretches upslope to the moorland wall. Field boundaries within the site are a mixture of drystone walls and fences, many of which are in bad condition..

The main vegetation type within the site is woodland, predominantly plantation. These are mainly monospecific, even aged conifer plantations of pines, Pinus spp, spruce, Picea spp and larch, Larix sp. There are some areas of more semi-natural woodland around the reservoirs and these are typical of the W7 wet woodland community, with frequent alder, Alnus glutinosa with occasional grey willow, Salix cinerea and goat willow, Salix capraea . The herb layer in these wet woodland areas includes marsh thistle, Cirsium palustre , creeping soft-grass, Holcus mollis , yellow pimpernel, Lysimachia nemorum, creeping buttercup, Ranunculus repens and opposite-leaved golden saxifrage. Away from the resevoirs the semi-natural broadleaved woodland is oak/birch dominated. Areas on the steeper slopes show a canopy of pedunculate oak, Quercus petraea , sessile oak, Q. robur, downy birch, Betula pubescen, silver birch, B. pendula with rowan, Sorbus aucuparia . The ground flora is dominated by wavy hair-grass, Deschampsia flexuosa with some common bent, Agrostis capillaris, bilberry, Vaccinium myrtillus and bracken, Pteridium aquilinum. This is characteristic of the W16 community. Other woodland areas have a similar canopy, with hazel, Corylus avellana , holly, Ilex aquifolium and hawthorn, Crataegus monogyna in the shrub layer and a more varied herb layer with Holcus mollis, bluebell , Hyacinthoides non-scripta and foxglove, Digitalis purpurea . This is characteristic of the W10 NVC type.

The lower altitude grasslands show signs of past improvement and impeded drainage. These areas are wet, areas support dominant Yorkshire fog, Holcus lanatus and tufted hair-grass , Deschampsia cespitosa in tme MG9 community, or Holcus lanatus and soft rush, Juncus effusus in the MG10 community. Acid grassland communities are represented by the U4 and U5 communities supporting Agrostis capillaris, sheep’s fescue, Festuca ovina, Deschampsia flexuosa, mat grass, Nardus stricta, heath bedstraw, Galium saxatile, Potentilla erecta and harebell, Campanula rotundifolia .

Heathland communities are dominated by mixtures of Vaccinium myrtillus and Calluna vulgaris with Deschampsia flexuosa representing the H12 community. Other species present include bell heather, Erica cinerea, crowberry, Empetrum nigrum and Pteridium aquilinum . This latter species forms extensive, species poor, stands representing the U20 community.

The large area known as Netherley Brow is dominated by purple moor-grass, Molinia caerulea forming a species poor variant of the M25 community. Other mire communities occur on stream sides and in flushes forming the M6 and M23 mires which support species such as Juncus effusus, jointed rush, J. acutiflorus, Viola palustris, marsh pennywort, Hydrocotyle vulgaris, Crepis paludosa and round-leaved crowfoot, Ranunculus omiophyllus .

This wide range of habitats and species provides excellent breeding and wintering sites for bird species. The site supports a variety of upland and woodland bird species. Woodland species known to breed include great spotted woodpecker, long-eared owl, woodcock, chiffchaff, willow tit, crossbill and siskin.

Supported by the five West Yorkshire district authorities of Bradford . Calderdale . Kirklees . Leeds . Wakefield

Notable breeding species on more open ground include skylark, curlew, snipe, lapwing, dipper, common sandpiper and reed bunting.

Ecological Evaluation

This site is probably the best example of south Pennine upland habitats for breeding birds outside the extensive South Pennine Moors and Dark Peak SSSI/SPA's. This lies adjacent to the SPA and provides an excellent buffer to the internationally important bird breeding grounds.

The site displays a good range of upland habitats including woodlands, grassland, heath, open water, mires and flushes and these, although they support only a typical range of species, help support a regionally important bird assemblage with over 50 regular breeding species. The site supports a variety of upland and woodland bird species. Woodland species known to breed include great spotted woodpecker, long-eared owl, woodcock, chiffchaff, willow tit, crossbill and siskin.

Notable breeding species on more open ground include skylark, curlew, snipe, lapwing, dipper, common sandpiper and reed bunting.

Site Management

The site is owned by Yorkshire Water and management varies from water catchment, commercial timber, grouse shooting, sheep grazing and recreation. There is a well signposted footpath network and a car park near Ramsden reservoir.

In terms of management for nature conservation it is important to maintain the balance of habitats which are important for bird species and to manage access, in order to keep public away from the more sensitive areas.

A management plan has been produced by Yorkshire Water for this site.

Site Name: Holme Styes Heathland Location: 2 Km south of Date of Survey: 19 September 2002 Surveyor: J North Grid Reference: SE 140055 1:10 000 Map: SE 10 NW Planning Authority: Kirklees M C Area: 2 Ha Natural Area: Coal Measures

NVC Types Present: W16b, U2, U20, H12a Keywords: Broadleaved semi-natural woodland, Acid grassland, Acidic dry heath Protected Species: No

Site Description Holme Styes Heathland is on the west bank of Holme Styes Resevoir. The boundaries are the water’s edge of the resevoir to the east and the edge of the bordering woodlands to the other directions.

Most of the site is covered with mature acidic heathland, dominated by heather, Calluna vulgaris and bilberry, Vaccinium myrtillus . The heathland community includes some common bent, Agrostis capillaris , wavy hair- grass, Deschampsia flexuosa, mat grass, Nardus stricta , hard fern, Blechnum spicant and occasional crowberry, Empetrum nigrum . This is an example of the H12a heathland community. There are areas of dominant bracken, Pteridium aquilinum within and on the edge of the heathland. These patches support heath bedstraw, Galium saxatile and locally frequent creeping soft-grass, Holcus mollis . These areas are examples of the U20 community.

There are some more open grassy areas with Holme Styes Heathland, the vegetation in these areas is dominated by Deschampsia flexuosa with Galium saxatile , tormentil, Potentilla erecta, pignut, Conopodium majus and common sorrel, Rumex acetosa . These areas are typical of U2 grassland.

The edge of the resevoir consists of a thin strip of woodland. The canopy is mainly silver birch, Betula pendula, downy birch, Betula pubescens and sessile oak, Quercus petraea with rowan, Sornus aucuparia . The ground flora is mainly Calluna vulgaris and Vaccinium myrtillus a continuation of the ehathland community although in places it also supports Deschampsia flexuosa, Pteridium aquilinum, broad buckler-fern , Dryopteris dilatata and bramble, Rubus fruticosus agg.. This is a good example of the W16 woodland community.

This site is important as it supports a well established colony of green hairstreak butterfly, Callophrys rubi . Vaccinium myrtillus is the main larval food plant for this species. The green hairstreak requires relatively short, open Vaccinium myrtillus .

Ecological Evaluation This site is a typical example of H12 heathland with some acid grassland and a thin strip of woodland. The main ecological interest is the presence of a large colony of green hairstreak butterfly.

Site Management The Calluna and Vaccinium are becoming tall and old, much of the Vaccinium is the same age. It would Be beneficial to graze at least part of the site to encourage new growth of the heathland species.
