1. INTRODUCTION Language is a very important tool that humans have, language comprises conventional spoken or written symbols or even gesture used by human to communicate with one other. Usually, language is used in the review such as poem, , movie and song. In this era, people can share or communicate someone with other through song. or in this case as a football fans using song as a tool to express their support for their proud football club. If we pay attention every football club has their own pride song which we usually refer to “Anthem”. One song with full magic that is very sacred and very much represents a team spirit. Watching football match is fun activity, one of ways to support that is by singing chants, similar to anthem but chant is more common and sung when sung as long as the player plays in the field. But anthems are usually sung before or after a match and be as proud of the team as the national anthem. As we know football anthem song has many kinds of figurative language because inside anthem contains the meaning suggested for giving spirits to football club in emotional aspects Dancygier & Sweetser, (2014, p.1) stated that “Figurative language was thought of as being one aspect of what gives a text – in particular, a poetic text – special esthetic value”. It means that the message delivered to the feels more beautiful than he directly talks about the personal qualities of his subjects, such as kindness, charm, and beauty. It can increase emotional involvement, and it might be exactly the intended artistic effect. The choice of topic based on interesting phenomena in figurative language in the song that have not been fully discussed and understanding the meaning of selected in anthem song of the most popular English premiere league’s club, it's so difficult because it has special meaning behind the word or sentence that must be understood. Regarding the research background, the problems raised by the researcher as follows: 1) What are the types of figurative language used in the anthem song of selected English Premier League's club?. 2) What are the types of figurative language used in the anthem song of selected English Premier League's club?. In this research the researcher proposes two major objectives to be describe as

2 follows: 1) To find out the types of figurative language in the selected anthem song of the English Premier League's club. 2) To describe the types of meaning of figurative language in the selected anthem song of the English Premier League's club. There is six previous study, Arifah (2016) analyzed the figurative language used in five John Legend’s song lyrics, the second previous study by Sharndama & Suleiman (2013), this research point out in the implicit function of figurative language used in selected traditional funeral songs of the Kilba people of Adamawa State. The next previous study writen by Saputri (2014), has concluded her research about an analysis of figurative language used in Rick Riordan`s Entitled `The Heroes of Olympics, Book Three: The Mark of Athena`. And then the next previous study written by Mahmood (2014) this study discusses the implicit function of figurative language in English Newspapers, the next previous study written by Rapiudin (2014), analyzed the figurative language used in the poems "My Friend", "My One True Love", and "No Regrets" by Shayna O'Connell, And the last previous study was conducted by Wardoyo (2015), He analyzed the figurative language used in movie manuscript from “Pirates of The Caribbean on Stranger Tide”. This research analyzed selected anthem song of the English Premier League's club. However the similar have been found in Arifah (2016) and Sharndama & Suleiman (2013). In their research, they analyzed the types of figurative language and meaning in the song lyrics. The researcher used the Reaske (1966) and Leech (1981) to present kinds of figurative language and types of meaning used in selected anthem song of the English Premier League's club. Basically figurative language are classified into four groups as follows comparison, contradiction, attachment, and repetition. The most of familiar figurative language which will be analyzed in this study are some types including simile, metaphor, , personification, allusion, eponym, hyperbole, synecdoche, metonymy, antonomasia, hipflask, , , paradox, repetition and paronomasia. The types of meaning can classified into seven types, such as: conceptual, connotative, social, affective, relfected, and thematic.

3

The researcher used the theory from Reaske (1966). In this study, the researcher only will discuss some of them they are sixteen types of figurative language. (1). Simile, Reaske (1966:41) said “ a simile calls attention to be comparison through the uses of the word “like” or “as”. (2) Metaphor, Reaske (1966:36) said “metaphore is which compares one thing to another directly”. (3) Allegory, Reaske (1966:25) stated “allegory is prolonged or extended metaphore which present it’s in a veiled way. (4) Personification according to Reaske (1966:88) personification is the process of assigning human characteristic to non-human objects, abstractions and ideas. Personification is a figure of speech in which a thing, an animal, or an abstract term (truth, natural) is made by human. (5) Allusion is a part of figurative language which suggesting the similarity between people, places, and events. Basically, it is a reference which explicit and implicit to the events, figures, or places in real life (Keraf, 2009:141). (6) Eponym, is a part of figurative language which likes a name of people always connected with specific nature, so the names is used for declaring its nature. Include: Hercules, Spiderman and etc (Keraf, 2009:141). (7) Hyperbole, Reaske, (1966:34) “Hyperbole is figure of speech which employs exaggeration”. (8) Synecdoche is the uses of the part for the whole divides synecdoche into two parts: they are Pars pro toto and Totem proparte. Pars pro toto is a part for the whole and Totem proparte is when the whole things stand for its part (Keraf, 2009:142). (9) Metonymy , Reaske (1966:36) said “metonymy is the subtitution of word closely associated with another word in place that other word. (10) Antonomasia is also a specific form of synecdoche which is formed as using epithets for replacing names, official, profession and etc (Keraf, 2009:142). (11) Hipflask or Hipalase is a kind of figurative language where a specific word used to explain that word, which. (12) Irony, Reaske (1966:35) also stated “irony deals with result from the contrast between the actual meaning of a word or a statement and suggestion of another meaning”. (13) Satire is an expression which rejects someone or something. (14) Paradox, Reaske (1966:38) said “paradox result when a poet present a pair of ideas, words, images or attitude which are, or appear to be self contradictiory”.

4

(15) Repetition, Repetition is figure of speech, which used by writer to repeat several words in the sentence. As mentioned by Keraf (2009:127) repitition is repeating sound, words or a whole of word in sentence for intensifying in suitable context. (16) Pun or Paronomasia is a kind of figurative language which uses similar sounds. It is a playing word based on the similarity of its sounds but it has much differential in a meaning (Keraf, 2009:142). The researcher used theory by Leech’s words in his semantics book (1981: 22), meaning is divided into seven types consisting of : (1) Conceptual Meaning, According to Leech (1981: 22), conceptual meaning is the same definition of cognitive, denotation, designative, and descriptive meaning. (2) Connotative Meaning is the communicative value an expression has by virtue of what it refers to, over and above its purely conceptual content (Leech, 1981: 25). (3) Stylistic or social meaning is that which a piece of language conveys about the social circumstances of its uses. In part, we decode the social meaning of a text through our recognition of different dimensions and levels of style within the same language (Leech, 1981: 27). (4) Affective Meaning, Another type of meaning that is closely related to social meaning is meaning which, according to Leech, is related to the way a language can reflect the speaker's personal feelings which may include attitudes toward the listener or something he is talking about, Leech. (1981, 28). (5) Reflected Meaning, In the case of reflected meanings, it can be explained as arising in situations of multiple conceptual meanings, when one word meaning influences our response to other meanings, as stated by Leech. (1981, 29) (6) Collocative meaning consists of associations obtained by words because the meaning of words tends to occur in their environment (Leech 1981, 30), (7) Thematic Meaning or what is communicated by the way in which and emphasis. It is often felt, for example, thay an active sentence such as has a different meaning from its passive equivalent, although in conceptual content they seem to he the same, Leech (1981, 30).

2. METHOD This study uses descriptive qualitative research. According to Bogdan and Biklen (1982) qualitative descriptive research whose data are collected in the form of

5 words or images rather than numbers. The concept of this research method is to explain and describe the social phenomena in the scope of linguistics.
