Program Description

The MS degree in MIS at the University of Illinois at Springfield is specifically focused on providing a balance between technical skills and knowledge of business functions and processes. This is attained in two ways.

Curriculum

The curriculum is designed to integrate information technology with business and management concepts.

Faculty

Most of the faculty who teach in the MIS program have real-world experience. In addition, all either have, or are pursuing, their doctorate.

UIS has a tradition of offering innovative programs to students at the time and place most convenient for them. The MS degree in MIS offers three options:

1. Traditional classroom instruction on in Springfield, Illinois 2. Online coursework offered over the Internet 3. Any combination of traditional in-class and online instructions that best meets your needs

Admission Requirements

University requirements You must have a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution with a grade point average of at least 2.75 on a 4.0 scale.

Department Requirements

For Degree Seeking Students. In addition to UIS graduate admission requirements, MIS students must have completed the equivalent of two semesters of accounting or ACC 311 Administrative Uses of Accounting; one semester of production/ operations management (such as BUS 322 Operations Management); one semester of statistics (such as ECO 213 Statistics for Business and Economics); one semester of college algebra or mathematics or the equivalent; and competency in a structured high-level programming language such as Java, C++, Visual Basic, COBOL, C, Fortran, etc; either through course work, such as CSC 225 and CSC 275. A grade of C- or better is required for all prerequisite courses.

All students applying for admission to the MIS department are expected to submit a Graduate Management Aptitude Test (GMAT) score or a Graduate Record Exam (GRE) score. Students may take their required prerequisite courses while they are waiting to submit either of these test scores. The test score requirement is waived for students having an undergraduate GPA greater than 3.0 or for student who have completed a graduate level degree. Other students having at least five years of professional experience in MIS field may petition to waive the test score.

Students work closely with an academic adviser who teaches in the program. The overall objective is to achieve the balance between technical knowledge and organizational knowledge that characterizes MIS expertise. Students may select electives based on their background and interest. Degree Requirements

• MIS 502 Technical Foundations of Information Systems • MIS 513 Management Information Systems • MIS 523 Managerial Decision Support Systems • MIS 542 Management of Database Systems • MIS 552 Systems Analysis and Design • MIS 564 Data Communications and Networking • MIS 567 Business Process Modeling and IT Governance • MIS 568 Business Process Management and Innovation • MIS 573 Project and Change Management • MIS 577 MIS Design and Research Methods

MIS Approved Elective (all 3 credit hours):

• MIS 576 Data Mining for Business Analytics or • MIS 578 Information Security

Closure Requirements

MIS 585 Thesis and Seminar OR MIS Elective AND MIS 583 Graduate Project or Seminar or MIS 584 Capstone

Important Course Notes:

1. Students who select the Thesis option are not required to complete the MIS elective.

2. MIS 585 is another closure option (which can be taken INSTEAD of MIS 584 or MIS 583). If the Thesis option is chosen the MIS elective is not required.

3. If the MIS 584 or MIS 583 option is chosen for closure requirement then MIS elective is required.

4. Electives: Either MIS 576 or MIS 578 may be taken as MIS elective.

5. Students who have equivalent experience in all but MIS 583, MIS 584, or MIS 585 may substitute an approved elective but must complete the total number of required hours for the degree.
