Lincoln’s New Salem State Historic Site Welcomes You Lincoln s New Salem State Historic Site invites you & your family to the Reunion of Direct Descendants of the New Salem Community Saturday, July 8, 2006 Lincoln’s New Salem State Historic Site Petersburg, Illinois The 2006 Lincoln’s Landing events celebrate the 175th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s arrival at New Salem July 8, 2006, is the Reunion of Direct Descendants of New Salem. Direct descendants will be recognized as special guests of New Salem and the Illinois Historical Preservation Agency. Descendants, relatives, friends, and visitors are invited to enjoy many special activities. Some descendant families have scheduled reunions in the area this weekend, and many participants are coming great distances to attend. We are happy to welcome everyone to New Salem. Please check in with us at the Descendant’s Registration Desk at the Visitors Center. Enjoy meeting new relatives and sharing your family history with family, friends, and the site. To reach New Salem from Springfield, follow Route 125 (Jefferson Street) to Route 97 (about 12 miles west), turn right at the brown New Salem sign; travel 12 miles to the site entrance. From Chicago, exit Interstate 55 at the Williamsville Exit 109 and follow the signs or take the Springfield Clear Lake Exit 98; Clear Lake becomes Route 125. From St. Louis, take 55 Exit 92 to Route 72 west; exit 72 at Route 4/Veterans Parkway Exit 93; take Veterans Parkway north to Route 125; turn left. This event is open to the descendants, collateral relatives, friends, and the public. Pre-registered direct descendants will receive special identification. Lincoln’s Landing – 175 Anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s Arrival at New Salem Tentative Reunion Schedule All descendants must check in at the Reunion Center (RC) at the Visitors Center (VC) and receive program updates, identification, packet, and pre-ordered items (shirts and BBQ tickets). At this time you may share with the site any family history, genealogy, stories, pictures, etc. you wish to bring.) The volunteers at this center and others who can assist you throughout the day will be wearing peach color Lincoln’s Landing polo shirts. Event activities begin at 9 A.M. and conclude about 10:00 P.M.; those requiring a staging area will be at the Carding Mill (about half way through the village). 9:00 – 5:00: Village open and staffed with costumed interpreters telling the story of Lincoln and New Salem. Period entertainment - dulcimer, bowed psaltery, hammered dulcimer, fiddle, etc. Demonstrations - spinning, hearth cooking, candle making, butter churning, weaving, basket A.M – 9:30 - 11 Punch and Judy Show – New Salem Staff – Carding Mill Chris Vallillo* – Carding Mill “Fox” Ellis** - Carding Mill Lunch – Don and Chamene Flynn invite you to the New Salem Deli and Pizzeria across from the Visitors Center. Photo-Opportunity for descendants and their families. **“Fox” Ellis is a dynamic storyteller, prolific author, and highly sought keynote speaker. His “Abraham Lincoln in Sangamon County” traces the rise of Lincoln from prairie state rail-splitter to American’s favorite president blends history and humor and will attempt to disentangle the man from the myth. (Isaac Gulihur was a resident of New Salem). *Chris Vallillo is a nationally acclaimed folksinger and songwriter who makes the people and places of “unmetropolitan” American come to life in song. Performing on six-string and bottleneck slide guitars, a harmonica and jaw-harp as well as hammer dulcimer, he weaves original, contemporary, and traditional folk songs and narratives into a compelling and entertaining portrait of the history and lifestyles of the Midwest. His program is “Abraham Lincoln in Song”. Photo-Opportunity Photographs will be taken according to the schedule. The enclosed schedule is tentative but will be relatively close to the final. Group pictures will be taken at ancestor’s homes and the schoolhouse. Descendants and their families should go to the ancestor’s site at the stated time. Please be on time. The schedule is tight. (Please see other side) Lincoln’s New Salem 15588 History Lane Petersburg, IL 62675 217-632-4000 e-mail: [email protected] visit our website: www.lincolnsnewsalem.com 3 Lincoln’s Landing – 175 Anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s Arrival at New Salem General Information The original packet included an invitation, pre-registration form which should arrive at New Salem by June 15, a general information sheet, photo-opportunity schedule, Theater in the Park Brochure/Ticket Information, Petersburg and Springfield lodging and sites of interest, brochures for the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library/Museum and Looking for Lincoln sites, and a data sheet about the many services at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library (The Illinois Historical Preservation Agency and the Presidential Library have been sent lists of the families who might be in attendance). For those who may be here on Tuesday, might to attend the Tuesday evening flag lowering ceremony by the 114th Illinois Infantry at 7:00 P.M. Lincoln’s Tomb. The tomb is open until 8 p.m. on Tuesdays during the summer. New Salem is open from 9-5 during the summer. Visitors may tour the village until dusk. A genealogy researcher will be at the Reunion Center most of the day. Tickets for the BBQ on Saturday should be ordered on the pre-registration form. It is unlikely they will be available on the day of the event. Those desiring Lincoln’s Landing t-shirts can place an order on their pre-registration to guarantee their availability. A special tax-included price is available at this time only. Pre- ordered items will be with your packet and identification at the Reunion Center. These items also will be available at the Reunion. The New Salem Deli, across from the VC with the bookstore, will be staffed to expedite lunches. Sandwiches - $5.-$7; drinks $1.50 including lemonade and iced tea; pizza by the slice; ice cream; rolls and coffee in the morning. www.stonebakepizzaco The play Abraham by Ken Bradbury and Bob Crowe has been a crowd-pleaser since its origin in the outdoor theatre at New Salem. Bradbury is updating it and adding some new songs for your enjoyment. The musical tells the story of Abe Lincoln at New Salem from the flatboat being grounded at the sawmill to his departure for Springfield six years later. The cast is fabulous; the play is filled with lively, lovely, music and some hilarious comedy. The Theater in the Park tickets should be ordered as soon as possible. Performances are Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings. In case of rain, the play is moved to the indoor theater at the VC; unfortunately, it will only seat the first 200 persons to purchase tickets. New Salem volunteer musicians will be performing throughout the village. Volunteers and staff will perform the normal activities of the day. Popular story teller – Brian “Fox” Ellis and musician Chris Vallillo will give performances you will not want to miss.
