Social Studies Mini-Unit The Reconstruction Era Goal: These lessons focus on both national and local personal narratives from the Reconstruction Period. Let these stories help you decide what characteristics a community, a leader or an individual would need during this time period. Materials: Computer with internet, writing materials Instruction: Following the Civil War, the Reconstruction Period began within our country an immense new chapter for social reform with the definition of freedom for debate. People began to rebuild the South and try to unite the states, but newly freed persons were seeking ways to build their own futures in a still hostile environment. Dive into these lessons to learn more about individuals of the time. Lesson 1: Lincoln Originals This online exhibition features digital scans of primary historical documents in Abraham Lincoln’s hand, or signed by him, drawn from the diverse manuscript holdings at Cincinnati Museum Center. 1. Explore the Lincoln Originals Online Exhibit 2. Read the Emancipation Proclamation Fact Sheet [linked here] a. Extension: Review the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments which are considered the Reconstruction Amendments. 3. Journal Entry: What characteristics defined President Lincoln? a. Write a persuasive argument in the form of a letter addressed to a past president (or the current administration) outlining an important issue and what you believe the correct course of action is and why. Cite evidence to support your case. 4. Extension Option: Research Lincoln’s Ten-Percent Plan, a plan for reconstruction, versus the Wade-Davis Bill, which was a Radical Republican plan for reconstruction. Remembering Lincoln The Lawyer1 By Kelly Andersen As a child I was taught to respect and admire our 16th president, yet I really did not comprehend why he was considered so great a man. I suspected it had something to do with the Gettysburg Address, or in general that he had been president during the Civil War, yet beyond that vague feeling I really knew very little about him. Not long ago, while visiting a bookstore, I noticed a one-volume edition of Carl Sandburg’s monumental six-volume epic biography of Lincoln,2 and decided that while I could not afford the time to read six volumes, I most certainly could read one. Besides, I reasoned, Sandburg was unquestionably an excellent writer and deserved to be read, even if the study of Lincoln was inconsequential. I was not disappointed in the book. It not only inspired a great respect for Lincoln, but bathed me with desire to know more and more about this most admired of all U.S. presidents. I soon returned to the bookstore and bought Lincoln biographies written by William H. Herndon3 (Lincoln’s law partner for more than 16 years), by Ward Hill Lamon4 (Lincoln’s law associate in Danville, Ill., where Lincoln traveled on the Illinois 8th Circuit) and by Isaac N. Arnold5 (an attorney who practiced before the same bar as Lincoln and who served in Congress during Lincoln’s administration). After reading these well written biographies, I also read—for good measure— comprehensive biographies by Stephen B. Oates6 and David Herbert Donald.7 These—written more recently—drew upon hundreds of sources not available to biographers who lived during Lincoln’s lifetime, and not even available to Sandburg. -

STEINER* We associate Abraham Lincoln with books more than any other president except, perhaps, Thomas Jefferson.1 But Jefferson’s association with books creates more distance, while Lincoln’s draws us closer.2 Lincoln’s reading is linked to self-betterment and personal growth.3 Lincoln is also seen as reader as a boy and a young man, not as an adult. Yet reading would pervade his life. I. THE FATHER OF THE MAN AND LINCOLN IN NEW SALEM The most popular cultural images of Lincoln as reader are his reading as a boy in Indiana and as a young man in New Salem. The image of Lincoln reading by fireside was popularized by Eastman 4 Johnson’s 1868 painting, Boyhood of Lincoln. -

FINAL REPORT Economic Impacts of the Proposed Pullman National Historical Park Submitted To: National Parks Conservation Association August 2, 2013 MFA Project Number 548 Executive Summary The National Parks Conservation Association (“NPCA” or “Client”) retained Market Feasibility Advisors, LLC (“MFA”) to assess the economic impacts of the potential designation of the historic Pullman neighborhood as a Pullman National Historical Park (“Park”) by the National Park Service (“NPS”). Pullman is a Chicago neighborhood located approximately 15 miles due south of downtown. It appears that the Pullman Historic District features all the attributes necessary to be designated as a unit of the National Park System, an action that could greatly enhance the revitalization of the area and preserve the architectural and cultural heritage that makes it such a historical treasure. Pullman showcases 19th and 20th Century industrial society with unique stories of architecture, labor history— including formation of the first African-American labor union, landscape design, urban planning, and transportation history. The convergence of multiple stories of undisputed national significance makes Pullman worthy of national park status. As an example of vertical integration, Pullman was only surpassed by Henry Ford’s River Rouge complex, presenting a historical model of corporate structure very much emulated in today’s world. Pullman offers ample opportunities for public use and enjoyment, in an environment rich in history. The economic impacts of the proposed National Historical Park designation would vary greatly depending on the specific actions taken in regards to that designation. It is MFA’s understanding that at this time NPS has not created any plans, let any contracts, or partnered with any concessionaires to operate anything in Pullman. -

Lincoln’s New Salem, Reconstructed MARK B. POHLAD “Not a building, scarcely a stone” In his classic Lincoln’s New Salem (1934), Benjamin P. Thomas observed bluntly, “By 1840 New Salem had ceased to exist.”1 A century later, however, a restored New Salem was—after the Lincoln Memorial, in Washington, D.C.—the most visited Lincoln site in the world. How this transformation occurred is a fascinating story, one that should be retold, especially now, when action must be taken to rescue the present New Salem from a grave decline. Even apart from its connection to Abraham Lincoln, New Salem is like no other reconstructed pioneer village that exists today. Years before the present restoration occurred, planners aimed for a unique destination. A 1920s state-of- Illinois brochure claimed that once the twenty- five original structures were rebuilt on their original founda- tions, it would be “the only known city in the world that has ever been restored in its entirety.”2 In truth, it is today the world’s largest log- house village reconstructed on its original site and on its build- ings’ original foundations. It is still startling nearly two hundred years later that a town of more than a hundred souls—about the same number as lived in Chicago at that time—existed for only a decade. But such was the velocity of development in the American West. “Petersburg . took the wind out of its sails,” a newspaperman quipped in 1884, because a new county seat and post office had been established there; Lincoln himself had surveyed it.3 Now the very buildings of his New Salem friends and 1. -
