Lina Kuhn [email protected] Department of English and Comparative Literature University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill “Affect and Deep Time in Lovecraft's The Shadow Over Innsmouth, and the Turn Towards Thinking Through the Epoch of the Anthropocene” Mark McGurl begins his article “The Posthuman Comedy” with an analysis of a work by Wai Chee Dimock entitled Through Other Continents: American Literature across Deep Time as a way to think through the concept of deep time and its appearance in fiction. McGurl states that “the perspective of deep time holds the promise, for Dimock, of reinvigorating ‘our very sense of the connectedness among human beings’” which becomes important in, for instance, “dissuading us from the wisdom of war” (McGurl 533). I will return later to the possible benefits of thinking of the ‘connectedness among human beings,’ or as Dipesh Chakrabarty states in his article “The Climate of History: Four Theses,” “the knowledge of humans as a species,” but first I would like to explore the ways in which a work of fiction might gesture towards those benefits on its own terms (Chakrabarty 219). In 1936 H.P. Lovecraft published his novella The Shadow Over Innsmouth, a horror story told by a nameless narrator about his encounters with an alien species in an American town shunned by the rest of the country. The narrator of this tale, through the abjection and horror caused by his loss of agency in relation to the aliens and their status as other, reveals how a sense of deep time changes a human’s reactions to his situation. -

P. Lovecraft’s Fiction Evan Lampe Department of History, National Chi Nan University No. 1, University Rd., Puli Township, Nantou 54561, Taiwan E-mail: [email protected] Abstract The “Innsmouth Look” combines several important themes explored by H. P. Lovecraft in his fiction: racial degeneration, fear of unknown creatures from the sea, and backwater oddity. It also reveals Lovecraft’s relationship to several aspects of Atlantic history. This article will define the “Innsmouth Look” in terms of both the specific physiological changes described in “The Shadow Over Innsmouth” and Lovecraft’s broader exploration of the terror of the sea. Maritime workers appear in his stories as villains largely due to their participation in the heterodox cults associated with the ancient gods of the so-called “Cthulhu Mythos.” These workers, however, are also invoking a long tradition of cultural resistance in Atlantic history. ANDERSON A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY IN ENGLISH UNIVERSITY OF RHODE ISLAND 1992 Abstract Although Howard Phillips Lovecraft (1890-1937) is generally regarded as one of the world's finest writers of horror and science fiction, his work has received little critical attention by mainstream critics. This study takes Lovecraft out of the shadows of literature by shedding light upon his work through a structural analysis of fifteen of his stories. This analysis shows that Lovecraft's fiction, while it may appear fantastic, expresses early twentieth century naturalism in a cosmic context. Part One subjects four of Lovecraft's best known stories to a detailed structural analysis using the theories of Roland Barthes and Gerard Genette to isolate Lovecraft's major themes and narrative techniques. -

Lovecraft’s Cthulhu Mythos Erika Mutter Welcome to Lovecraft’s Madness Once upon a time, there resided a king over Providence Plantations, who believed that his beloved city should never change or adapt to the newcomers infiltrating his land. As he looked over College Hill towards Federal Hill and beyond, he noticed that this change was not something that could be avoided. At first, Howard Phillips Lovecraft regarded the permeation of his town as an otherness, closer to a disease, and something to be removed as such. These sentiments are wholly expressed within his immense epistolary efforts over the course of his life and hidden within the folds of his magnificent cosmic horror mythos. -

Lovecraft Weird Fiction Horror literature Stavanger, May 11. 2016 Fantasy literature date/year Speculative realism Abstract This thesis is a study of the “Cthulhu Mythos”, which is a fictional universe created and developed by American Weird Fiction writer H. P. Lovecraft. The study focuses primarily on Lovecraft’s philosophical idea of “cosmicism”, which is the notion that the human species is small, transient and insignificant in relation to the cosmos. Many critics and scholars recognise that cosmicism is an important factor in the Cthulhu Mythos. As this study demonstrates and discusses, the otherwise pessimistic and non-anthropocentric implications of cosmicism can be renegotiated through interpretations of how certain elements and themes in the Mythos stories, such as religion, culture and aesthetics, are presented and framed. Before treating the implications of cosmicism, I discuss representations of modern science and scientific rationales in the stories. Lovecraft attained the idea of cosmicism through scientific studies and his interpretations of contemporary scientific theories. In the Cthulhu Mythos, the representation of cosmicism is bound up with representations of modern science, which is a central element in the fiction. The scientific procedures and investigations in the stories tend to bring about frightening and disillusioning implications of how humans are threatened by malevolent cosmic entities, rather than the empirical and enlightening understanding about cosmos and reality that was sought in the first place. -
Stealing Creatures
SWITCHING CREATURES. HERE is the most powerful trick of all. Use a Lovecraft plot, but switch the creature. With simple changes, you’ll have a new story. This is because Lovecraft’s creatures are mostly interchangeable. For example, here is the plot of The Shadow Over Innsmouth, redone as a Mi-Go scenario: The Investigators drive to a strange mountain town, which the locals avoid. As they wander around the crumbling town, they see closed-up buildings and hear buzzing voices. Everywhere in the town, there is an oppressive rhythm or vibration, half-imagined and half-real. From a rambling drunk, the Investigators hear about rituals in the wood, where inhabitants worship Shub-Niggurath with hideous black winged creatures. When the Investigators return to their car, the engine is broken. They must stay in the mountain town. In the dead of the night, the winged creatures swarm on the Investigators, who must flee. Only the details have changed. The seaside town becomes a mountain town. Guttural voices become buzzing ones. The fishy smell becomes an alien vibration. Mating becomes a ritual in the woods. The plot, however, is the same. 24 Conversely, here is the plot of The Whisperer in Darkness, redone as a Deep One scenario: The Investigators read reports of corpses, half-human and half-fish, washed up on remote beaches. Locals tell folktales of mermaid-like creatures and strangers speaking in unnatural, guttural voices. The Investigators receive a letter from a correspondent, who believes the fish-creatures are watching him. In a museum near the coast, the Investigators find an engraved monolith, depicting the creatures.
