You who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice. He will amend for you your deeds and forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great attainment. Indeed, we offered the Trust to the heavens and the earth and the mountains, and they declined to bear it and feared it; but man [undertook to] bear it. Indeed, he was unjust and ignorant. (QS. (QS. Al- Ahzab: 70-72)2

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the Problem

Children is the next generation which could be teachers, presidents, doctors and many other to replace the present generation.1 Teaching children can also be an interesting work, because it is amazing thing to occupy, so a good teacher needs to determine a successful teaching. The teacher also needs to make the lessons interesting, exciting and challenging. In order to maintain the learner’s interest in learning, a teacher can use different techniques or strategies and apply different kinds of activities in teaching. A good teacher should make good communication to the learners because it is important to consider learners’ attitude when they were doing or saying something.2It means that teacher needs to be ready and prepared in teaching for the learners and choice of planning which can be used during the activities.

Teacher’s role needs to build good communication with his learner. If there is no conversation and care it could not be successful because of misunderstanding between teacher and learner during the conversation.3 Thus, the teacher should make a good social interaction with the learners as their tools in daily life. In this case,

teacher’s role was really needed to build a good relationship and to have a good social interaction with other people.

The reason for choosing the role of teacher is based on the writer’s curiosity in analyzing on the one of the characters in Wild Child’s Film by Nick Moore. The topic of the role of teacher in Wild Child’s Film by Nick Moore interesting for the writer because she thought that by knowing the roles of teacher, learners can be helped in their learning process and also there are many teachers who do not aware that study in classroom not only explaining and explaining but they also have to be good communicating with the learners. So, teacher and learners must work together to make good communication for good future. The writer also knows that the roles of teacher are very needed for people to help the learners. In this thesis proposal the writer interest to analyze film where there many aspects in film such as economy, social, ideology, culture, and psychology. Amy Villarejo stated that film is structured like a language and it is telling stories.4It means that film offers us of seeing and feeling and it is inspired product of creative team and might well stimulate person fantasies. The writer interested in choosing film in this research for some reasons:

First, this film tells about a girl who always spends her time in her life, so her family sent her to English boarding school to learn something new in life. Second, there is a good teacher she is beautiful and very care with her learners. She has a student who looks confuse in her life, she is Poppy More, Poppy is a bratty, self-

absorbed 16-year-old whose pampered L.A. childhood has left her with a notable sense of self entitlement. Showered with unlimited-balance credit cards and constantly flanked by a horde of hangers-on, the ill-mannered Poppy loudly lets her parents know just how frustrated she is with her current family situation. Third, this film got academy awards in to 2011 as the best actor

There are some problems that occasionally happen related to the role of teacher to her student. The student was naughty girl, she was sixteen-year-ol, it is Poppy More has always got what she wanted and lives a pampered life in her L.A. world. Though she is handed credit cards with unlimited balances and surrounded by countless hangers on, Poppy cannot escape the mounting frustration she feels with her family situation and she makes sure everyone knows it. After an over-the-top prank pushes her father one step too far, Poppy is shipped off to an English boarding school. It can be seen in the pictures and dialogue below:

The pictures and dialogue above show that Poppy was sad stay longer from her family, her father send her to staying in English boarding school because she was naughty. Her father wants to make something new in Poppy’s life. That is way Poppy is sent to English boarding school alone. In English boarding school Poppy finds a good teacher where teacher always care and understand her. Her teacher helps Poppy to make different life.

Mrs. Kingsley is a very good teacher and respected by all the students, she is very caring for all her students, Mrs. Kingsley will help her father Poppy more in overcoming the problems on Poppy, because Poppy is very naughty. Mrs. Kingsley has rules that all of her students are very obedient, from walking, sleeping on time, and when the lights are off, all students are required to sleep. By using the internet in the computer room teaches you how to communicate well with others through good language, how to respect and be nice, and how to respect yourself and others, so Mrs.

Kingsley makes all of his students into a smart, good and independent woman . When any student breaks the rules he should get a penalty and a court of honor will be conducted by Mrs. Kingsley. It can be seen in the picture and dialogue below:

Picture 39

Mrs. Kingsley : What we do produce are smart, independent, free-thinking,10

From the picture and dialogue above it can be seen that Mrs. Kingsley is very concerned, and warmly welcomes the new Poppy More youth who is very rude, she keeps being nice, and when Poppy makes a mistake calling Poppy but she does not scold and indirectly siding, giving a briefing how it should be in school, the school is not to make someone famous but make a good and Independent Student.

Finally, based on the reasons above, the writer will analyze this thesis entitle

CHAPTER II

THEORETICAL FRAMEWORK

2.1 Objective Theory

In analyzing a literature we should understand about the story, which has relation to the value in this analyzed.11 Related to this analysis, some authors have tried to provide the theory that is concerned writer used the theory of literature with objective theory. Adiel said that “Teory objektif merupakan teori sastra yang memandang karya sastra sebagai dunia otonom, sebuah dunia yang dapat melepaskan diri dari siapa pengarangnya, dan lingkungan sosial budayanya.”12Abrams said in Gomathys’ journal that in his book:

Objective orientations, which on principle regard the work of art in isolation from all these external points of reference, analyses it as a self-sufficient entity constituted by its part in their internal relations, and seu out to judge it solely by criteria intrinsic to its own made of being.13

It means that objective theory is regard work art free from external point. That theory has relation to this analyze word by word. It also helps the writer in making a deep and sharp analysis and more focus. Abrams’ objective theory is related to the analysis word itself, in this research writer chooses objective theory because writer wants to discuss about intrinsic elements of literary work. Intrinsic elements of film

are: theme, characterization, plot, setting and massage. Here, writer discuss about the role of teacher to create children’s educations by using psychology approach.

2.2 Psychology Approach

Psychology is the study of human and animal behavior with the object of understanding why living beings behave as they do. It is a study of all human affairs, mind, situation and condition also behavior and action deal with human daily activity.

Psychology’s most famous figure is also of the most influential and controversial thinkers of the twentieth century. Segment Freud’s work and theories helps shape our views of childhood, personality, memory, sexuality, and therapy. Psychology is the scientific study of mind and behavior.14

The character’s behavior in the story may indicate it is psychology condition.

Bahwa didalam fiksi psikologi yang mana dilukiskan, tidak hanya sebuah peristiwa tetapi merupakan tingkah laku dan tindakan tanduk para tokoh utama cerita. Dimana seorang tokoh mengapa begini, mengapa pendirianya begitu, didasarkan pada latar belakang kejiwaanya.15 Psychology can be an approach to study character behavior, this focus of functionalism is on how behavior works to help in their environment.

Through and action because psychology is concentrate on those aspect of the psychic that have to do with learning, it is process of since perception, thinking, learning, unconscious of personality when they interact with the environment.

14John A. Bargh and Ezequiel Morsella, The Unconsious Mind,(Association for Psychological Science, 2008), p. 73 15Nyoman Kutha Ratna, Teori, Metode dan Teknik Penelitian Sastra,p. 62-63

10

The psychoanalytic approach focuses on the importance of the unconscious mind (not the conscious mind) in other words, psychoanalytic is the view that emphasizes the unconscious aspects of mind, conflict between biotical instincts and society’s demand and early childhood experiences. This perspective dictates that behavior is determined by their past experiences that are left in the unconscious mind

(people are unaware of them). This perspective is still based on Freud’s psychoanalytic perspective about early experience being so influential on current behavior, but the focus on sex is not as great, it means that psychoanalytic approach is an approach that focuses more on the unconscious mind in people. It is employing some theories in personality. Freud’s seminar work on personality provided a modal with three components.16 They are:

1. Id: a basic, intrinsic force which express itself either as Eros, the love instinct (with

an energy referred to as the ‘libido’), or as Tanat’s, the destructive or death instinct.

The foundation of Freud’s contribution to modern psychology is his emphasis on the unconscious aspect of the human psyche. It can seen on the Handbook of

Critical Approaches to literature is the reservoir of libido, the primary source of all psychic energy. It functions to fulfill the primordial life principle, which Freud considers to be the pleasure principle without consciousness or semblance or ration order, the id is characterized by a tremendous and amorphous vitality. The id is, in

16Anonym .Psychoanaliytic Approach. [Online] http://www.guidance-research.org/EG/LLL/ theories/psychoanaliytic/, (accessed February 10, 2014 at 11.55 am)

11

short, the source of all our aggressions and desires. It is lawless, asocial and amoral. It is function is to gratify our instincts for pleasure without regard.17

From the explanation above, that is the attitude heedless of consequence without consciousness. It is the dangerous potentialities.

2. Ego: this part of the personality tries to keep a balance and sits between instinctive

forces of the superego and the id.

The ego is protected the individual. Ego is unconscious: the ego nevertheless comprises what we ordinarily think of as the conscious mind.

3. Superego: a basic, instinctive force which is a drive towards the individual’s ideal

self. This super conscientiousness is as extreme as the id.

From the explanation above, from the Freud’s three components, can be seen that the id is dominated by the pleasure principle and the ego by the reality principle and the superego is dominated by the morality principle. We might say that the id can make devils, that the superego will have us behave as angels and that it remains for the ego to keep us healthy human beings by maintaining a balance between these two opposing force. In the simple, three components that Freud provide is all to know about id the source of libido or negative characteristic or full of the devil and ego is moral concerning base on environment, and ego is the positive value that have in human mind. Sigmund Freud divides the using of psychoanalytic approach to literature into four object, they are:

17Wilfrend Elguerin et al. Handbook of Critical Approaches to Literature fifth edition. New York: Oxford University Press, 2005, p. 156-157

12

1. The author

The theory is uses to analysis the author and his or her life, and the literary

work is seen to supply evidence for this analysis. This is often call

“psychobiography”.

2. The character

The theory is uses to analysis one or more of the character; the psychological

theory becomes a tool to explain the character’s behavior of motivation. The

more closely the theory seems to apply to the characters, the more realistic the

work appears.

3. The audience

The theory is uses to explain the appeal of the work for those who read it; the

work is seen to embody universal human psychological process and

motivations, to which the readers respond more or less unconsciously

4. The text

The theory is uses to analysis the role of language and symbolism in the

work.18

In this research the writer chooses on the character on the novel, this approach to reveal the psychological dimension inside of the character including her behavior,

18Sunaryono, The Analysis of The Consequences of Willy’s Frustration In His Life Toward Himself and The Plot as Depicted in ArtherMiliter’s Death of Salesman drama: A Psychoanalytic Approach. (Jambi: Adab Faculty The State Institute For Islamic Students Sulthan Thaha Saifuddin Jambi,2013), p. 17

13

motivation, role and conflict. The writer will use approach to find the kinds of the roles of teacher in changing Poppy’s attitude in Wild Child’s Film by Nick more.

2.3 Theory of Teacher’s Role

The common method in teaching learning process is “teacher-centered approach”, where the teacher plays more important roles, teacher, gives instructions, lets the discussion, or assigns the homework. Consequently, the students have less participation in the class room. It means that the teachers who merely serve as the source of information also cause problem since those teachers give knowledge to their students, but they do not encourage the learners’ creative thinking.

The same opinion comes from who say that to make learning effective, the students’ needs should be further emphasized more so that they can actively be engaged in creating, understanding correcting the knowledge.19 By doing it, the students not only know about the theories, but also how to apply them into their real life. According Jeremy Harmer (1988), classroom practice are tasks related to teaching and learning process involving many activities. The activities imply role the relationship between teacher and learner.20

2.4 Definition of Attitude

Many psychologists have given different definitions for attitudes. According to

Schneider (1988), ‘Attitudes are evaluative reactions to persons, objects, and events.

This includes your beliefs and positive and negative feelings about the attitude object.’

19Richards and Renandya, Methodology in Language Teaching,(New York: Cambridge University Press,2002), p. 52. 20 Douglas Brown, Teaching by Principle an Interactive Approach to Language Pedagogy, (New York, NY Longman, 2000), p. 87

14

(179). He also added that attitude can guide our experiences and decide the effects of experience on our behaviors. Besides that, Baron and Byrne also gave a similar definition of attitude which is, ‘Attitudes can be defined as lasting, general evaluations of people (including oneself), objects, or issues. Attitude is lasting because it persists across time. A momentary feeling does not count as an attitude.’ (1987). According to him attitudes are lasting since it remains across time.

This is similar to a statement made by Vaughan & Hogg (1995), ‘Attitudes are relatively permanent- persist across times and situations. A momentary feeling in one place is not an attitude.’ Therefore, if you encountered a brief feeling about something, it does not count as an attitude. In brief, it could be said that, attitude is a positive or negative evaluations or feelings that people have towards other people, objects, issues or events. Attitudes include the general way people feel towards socially significant objects and most attitudes are lasting.21

2.5 The Way to Change the Attitude

There are three ways to change the attitude22

1. Generating a Positive Attitude

Get rid of negativity in life. If there are people, activities, or situations in

life that continually feel stressful, person may need to let them go. A change in

attitude depends on living a new kind of life. Make sure the relationship is healthy.

A healthy relationship should be positive, and result in feeling better. look for the

21M Ahzarin R Banzani “ Attitude” http://eprints.utm.my/19940/1/001.pdf, accessed on 16 February 2018 22 Whaples, Atitude Change, Your Chalange, Journal of Attention, 1975, p. 2

15

positive, where there is always something in any situation that is worth praising.

Be kind to others. One of the quickest ways to feel better is to be kind to other

people. Whether this involves letting someone else have the right of way in traffic

or writing a note to cheer up a friend, taking an action to help someone else will

increase your positivity.

2. Forming New Habits

Waking up one hour earlier each morning allows time to focus on self,

goals, and intention to change the attitude. Spend time with positive people. If

there are people in life who leave it feeling drained, unproductive, and depressed.

That sounds easy, but it may not be something that person was used to paying

attention to. Try to respond, not react. When in a stressful situation, think about it,

use reason to find a solution, and do what makes sense. Focus on one thing at a

time with trying to spread the attention too broadly results in increased stress and

lower levels of concentration. Developing a greater amount of control over the

attention will positively affect the feeling of well-being and positivity.23

3. Giving motivation and Developing positive Attitude

Every person has chance to change the habit, it can come from other

people. People can change the habit by giving motivation and develop positive

attitude. The person who got motivations will be aware to change the habit.

People can apply the new situation because everyday has something to be grateful

23 Kiran Lakkaraju and Ann Spee, A Cognitive-Consistency Based Model of Population Wide Attitude Change, journal Sandia National Laboratories, 2011, p. 3

16

for, but some days gratitude is harder to find than others. Learning to say thank

you is an essential element of changing the attitude, and living in positivity.

Practicing meditation or prayer deliberately places the mind in the present

moment, which is vital for cultivating a positive attitude. Find regular times

throughout the day to engage in meditation or prayer. Keep a jar in a central

location in your home, and every day write down one thing that is grateful for that

day.

From the explanations above, ti can be known that there are three ways to

change the attitude such as Generating a Positive Attitude, Forming New Habits

and giving motivation and developing positive Attitude. The writer used this

theory to find out Mrs. Kingsley change Poppy’s attitude in Wild Child’s Film by

Nick Moore.

2.6 The Factors of Affecting Attitudes

Social learning process is formed from social interaction. In social interaction, the individual forms a certain attitude pattern toward the various psychological objects that he faces. Among the various factors that influence the formation of attitudes are:24

1. Personal experience

To be able to form the basis of attitude, personal experience must leave a

strong impression. Therefore, attitudes will be more easily formed when the

24 Harris Chaiklin, Attitudes, Behavior, and Social Practice, Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare, 2011, p. 3

17

personal experience involves emotional factors. In situations involving emotions, appreciation of the experience will be deeper and longer lasting.

2. Culture.

B.F. Skinner (in, Azwar 2005) emphasizes the influence of the environment (including culture) in shaping one's personality. Personality is nothing but a consistent pattern of behavior that describes the history of reinforcement (reinforcement, reward) possessed. The pattern of reinforcement of the community for such attitudes and behaviors, not for other attitudes and behaviors.

3. Other people who are considered important.

In general, the individual is conformist or in the direction of the person he deems important. This tendency is motivated, among other things, by the desire to affiliate and the desire to avoid conflict with those who are considered important.

4. Massa media.

As a means of communication, various mass media such as television, radio, have a great influence in the formation of opinions and beliefs of people.

The existence of new information about something provides a new cognitive foundation for the formation of attitudes toward it. Suggestive message that the information brings, if strong enough, will provide an affective basis in perceiving and judging things so that a certain attitude is formed.

18

5. Educational and Religious Institutions.

As a system, educational and religious institutions have a strong influence

in the formation of attitudes because both lay the foundations of understanding and

moral concepts within the individual. Understanding will be good and bad, the

dividing line between what is and cannot be done, is obtained from education and

from the religious center and its teachings.

6. Emotional factors in self.

Not all attitudes are determined by the circumstances of one's environment

and personal experience. Sometimes, a form of attitude is an emotionally based

statement that serves as a sort of frustrating channel or diversion of the form of an

ego defense mechanism. Such an attitude is temporary and soon passes by the

frustration it has lost but it can also be a more persistent and lasting attitude. For

example the form of attitude based on emotional factors is prejudice.25

2.7 The Effects of Attitude on School

John Jones said that there four effects attitude has on social group work, it could be school, company and society;26

1. Change the Habit

Environments can change frequently someone’s attitude, it caused she

or he could not have chance to do the same thing like she or he did before.

That is why environments will help someone to change the habit and also the

25Azwar Saifuddin, ”Factor Affecting Attitudes” , http://Azwarsaifuddin.com/factor-affective- attitudes/accessed on 16 February 2018 26 John Jones, The Theory Of Attitude Formation And Change And Its Application To Social Group Work, journal of Social Attitude, 2011, p. 3

19

attitude. Someone who has changed environment can become different habit

and also attitude, it caused she or he has big motivation to change life. The

motivation comes from any situations, it could be from their self or from other.

Employees who display a positive habit and also attitude toward change may

welcome and even embrace it, as they may view it as a chance to enhance their

skills. As a result, they may adapt to change more quickly than an employee

with a negative habit, attitude, reducing the time it takes to implement change

in a productive manner.

2. Teamwork

An employee’s attitude has an impact on how she functions as part of a

team. For instance, as many schools attempt to create a more diverse

environment, employees may need to work with people of a different race,

nationality or gender than they have in the past. Employees who embrace these

diverse workers and are willing to assimilate them into their team can foster a

spirit of cooperation, making the team more productive in the process

3. Innovation

Aomeone’s attitude can affect the presence of innovation and

creativity, which can lead to increased productivity. Workers with a positive

attitude toward their job and the company are more likely to make helpful

suggestions or ideas that help the business grow. On the other hand, workers

with a negative attitude may only be concerned with producing enough to get

by while having little interest in innovation

20

4. Turnover

Companies that experience high employee turnover levels not only

incur the high costs associated with hiring workers, they also experience

reduced productivity until the new workers are up to speed. Employees who

feel good about their jobs and workplace may be less likely to leave for

greener pastures, helping companies to minimize the productivity gap

associated with turnover. Employees with negative attitudes may eventually

seek an improved work situation and decide to leave the company.

From the explanations above it can be known that there are four

There four effects attitude has on workplace productivity; Change Adaptation,

Teamwork, Innovation and Turnover. The writer used this theory to find out

the effects of Mrs. Kingsley’s efforts to change Poppy’s attitude in Wild

Child’s Film by Nick Moore.

2.8 Character

Character comes from the Greek word meaning “to mark” or mark and focus on how to apply the value of goodness in the form of action or behavior, so that people who are dishonest, cruel, greedy and other bad behavior saying ugly character.

Conversely, people whose behavior in accordance with the moral code called a noble character27.

Understanding the character according to the Language Center Dekdiknas is

“congenital, heart, soul, personality, character, behavior, personality, nature, character, temperament, character”. As for the character is personality, behavior, character, and character.

2.9 Kinds of Characters

Character is a person or other being in a narrative such as a novel, play, television series, film, or video game. The character may be entirely fictional or based on a real-life person, in which case the distinction of a fictional versus real character may be made. The writer found that there are fourteen characters in the film based on

Bernando stated that:28

1. Major or central characters are vital to the development and resolution of the

conflict. In other words, the plot and resolution of conflict revolves around

these characters.

2. Minor characters serve to complement the major characters and help move the

plot events forward.

3. Dynamic - A dynamic character is a person who “changes over time”, usually

as a result of resolving a central conflict or facing a major crisis. Most dynamic

characters tend to be central rather than peripheral characters, because

resolving the conflict is the major role of central characters.

28Bernando, Karen, http://learn.lexiconic.net/characters.htm, (accessed July 03, 2018, at 09:54 am)

22

4. Static - A static character is someone who “does not change over time”; his or

her personality does not transform or evolve.

5. Round - A rounded character is anyone who has a complex personality, he or

she is often portrayed as a conflicted and contradictory person.

6. Flat - A flat character is the opposite of a round character. This literary

personality is notable for one kind of personality trait or characteristic.

7. Stock - Stock characters are those types of characters who have become

conventional or stereotypical through repeated use in particular types of

stories. Stock characters are instantly recognizable to readers or audience

members (e.g. the femme fatale, the cynical but moral private eye, the mad

scientist, the geeky boy with glasses, and the faithful ). Stock

characters are normally one-dimensional flat characters, but sometimes stock

personalities are deeply conflicted, rounded characters (e.g. the “Hamlet”

type).

8. Protagonist - The protagonist is the central person in a story, and is often

referred to as the story's main character. He or she (or they) is faced with a

conflict that must be resolved. The protagonist may not always be admirable

(e.g. an anti-hero); nevertheless s/he must command involvement on the part of

the reader, or better yet, empathy.

9. Antagonist - The antagonist is the character(s) (or situation) that represents the

opposition against which the protagonist must contend. In other words, the

antagonist is an obstacle that the protagonist must overcome.

23

10. Anti-Hero - A major character, usually the protagonist, who lacks conventional

nobility of mind, and who struggles for values not deemed universally

admirable.

11. Foil - A foil is any character (usually the antagonist or an important supporting

character) whose personal qualities contrast with another character (usually the

protagonist). By providing this contrast, we get to know more about the other

character.

12. Symbolic - A symbolic character is any major or minor character whose very

existence represents some major idea or aspect of society. For example, in

Lord of the Flies, Piggy is a symbol of both the rationality and physical

weakness of modern civilization; Jack, on the other hand, symbolizes the

violent tendencies (the Id) that William Golding believes is within human

nature.

13. Direct presentation (or characterization) - This refers to what the speaker or

narrator directly says or thinks about a character. In other words, in a direct

characterization, the reader is told what the character is like. When Dickens

describes Scrooge like this: “I present him to you: Ebenezer Scrooge the most

tightfisted hand at the grindstone, Scrooge! A squeezing, wrenching, grasping,

scraping, clutching, covetous, old sinner” this is very direct characterization.

14. Indirect presentation (or characterization), this refers to what the character

says or does. The reader then infers what the character is all about. This

mimics how we understand people in the real world, since we can’t “get inside

24

their heads”. In other words, in an indirect characterization, it's the reader who

is obliged to figure out what the character is like. And sometimes the reader

will get it wrong.

From kinds of characters above, it can be concluded that there are fourteen characters in the literary works. The writer will use this theory to find out Mrs.

Kingsley and Poppy More portrayed in Wild Child’s Film by Nick Moore.

2.10 Description of Characters in the Film

Character is one of the important elements in the narrative. Character is made to distinguish one entity from another (human, animal, spirit, robot, furniture, and other objects) based on mental, emotional and social quality. According to David

Marshall Forno the characterization process is a process in which characters are named and categorized so that they become a property in the world of narration.29 The term characterization can be used to refer to the assumption of property in a character and also to the whole process and the results of giving attributes to the character. This process can be done directly if a characteristic is clearly deemed to originate from the character, or indirectly when the results of the conclusions are drawn from the text based on knowledge of the world and various forms of knowledge of character.30

Menurut Jannidis in David Marshall Forno said that the characterization process is the process of “show and tell”. Directly (expository or direct presentation) by means of

the narrator describing or explaining clearly about the character, and indirectly

(dramatic or indirect representation), by showing the character through the actions carried out by the character (behavior, action , words, recorded thoughts) or with the help of other figures such as their views on the character.31

2.11 Review of Related Research

In this proposal, there are four research related to the thesis. First from the thesis is Suherman (2010), he was student of Institute Of Teacher Training And

Education Pgri Semarang by thesis entitled “A model of good teacher in ‘The Ron

Clark story’ movie script”32 The thesis tries to answer three problems; to find out the main character of a good teacher as performed in the movie, to find out the way the main character revealed in the movie, and to find out how the movie can be understood by English teacher. In analyzing; the writer uses sources of the data – words and acts, and document, etc. The source is from the Ron Clark story movie. The writer concludes that there are many elements in the Ron Clark Story, the most important of which are characterization consisting of the main character and minor character, plot of the sequence of events of which the story is composed, setting the place and the time when they happen. Ron Clark is the main character in the movie revealed through two ways direct and indirect methods, through these methods Ron

Clark presented as a teacher in my thesis, he is a good teacher and has positives sides

such being responsible, strong, and self-confidence . Ron Clark can be applied in teaching of English class.

Secondly, the student of English Department, The Faculty of Humanities,

Diponegoro University, named Bawani (2013), by thesis entitled “The Role of

Teacher in Dangerous Minds Movie”33 This research is about the role of teacher in

Dangerous Minds movie. Teacher plays an important role, especially for her students.

In Dangerous Minds movie, which a lot of conflicts, and each characteristics, with these differences, each character interacts with another one. From the interactions, role teacher can be seen. From the discussion, it can be said that in Dangerous Mind movie, Lou Anne Johnson is a teacher that have a unique method to teach her students.

This makes her students become closer and closer to her. Her teaching methods are unique and make her student respect her as her behavior. Miss Johnson very important and involved in the role of the teacher, such as direct contact, one-to-one preempting, and role modeling. Three main role of the teacher can played by Ms Johnson well, so her students can make good development in her behavior and scores.

Third, the student of English Department Of Education Faculty State Institute of Islamic Studies (STAIN) Salatiga named Jati Kastriyant, by thesis entitled

“Strategies For Teaching Children In Totto-Chan; The Little Girl At The Window

Novel”34This is a study on teaching of elementary school. Educating is the most important things in somebody’s life. Considering this significant role of education as a teacher, he or she has an important role and a big responsibility to teach children.

Moreover as a teacher, this is great job to create some strategies as creative and effective as possible to make the children enjoy learning. Besides that, teacher should be sensitive to children’s need, since children have their own characteristics physically, psychologically, socially and morally. By this way the teaching learning process can be interesting and boredom can be avoided. Based on this study, the writer found a lot of strategies in teaching children as depicted in Totto – Chan; the Little

Girl at the window novel; the novel is based on the author’s own experience. By using qualitative method the writer identifies and describes the strategies are used in the novel. The novel discusses many strategies of teaching young learners using outdoor than indoor activities because outdoor activities can be effective and they can attack children’s attention to the willingness to learn. The writer hopes that this study can give beneficial information to elementary school teachers.

Fourth, journal of pediatric psychology, named John Brantley by journal entitled “Changing Children's Attitudes Toward Physically Handicapped Peers:

Effects of a Film and Teacher-Led Discussion”35 This is a study on Numerous studies indicate that elementary-aged children hold negative attitudes towards physically

handicapped peers. As a pretest, the attraction of 280 fourth graders to a photograph of a handicapped child using crutches and braces was assessed. A film emphasizing the similarities between a handicapped student and able-bodied peers was evaluated by randomly assigning the students by classroom to one of three groups: a group which only viewed the film, a group which saw the film and participated in a teacher-led discussion, or a control group. Posttests administered to the subjects immediately following the film and again 1 week later were two attraction measures and a measure of interest similarity between subjects and a handicapped peer. The data used to analyze treatment effects were from those students whose attraction to a handicapped peer was at the median or below on the pretest. Compared to controls both interventions had an effect on students' attraction to the physically handicapped peer; however, there was no effect on interest similarity. The effects on attraction were maintained over the follow-up period. It was concluded that the film had value for improving children's attitudes toward a physically handicapped peer but there was not evidence that the change was mediated by the “similarity attraction” model.

Fifth, thesis of English Department Faculty of Adab-Letters and Islamic

Culture the State Institute for Islamic Studies Sulthan Thaha Saifuddin Jambi, named

factors which cause the changing students gangster’s behavior happen as seen in

Freedom Writers film and the impacts of the changing toward students gangster’s behavior as seen in Freedom Writers film. The writer uses human behavior theory to analyze the research. This research uses qualitative method and descriptive technique to explain and analyze the data. This research has some procedures. The first, writer finds all of data which are gotten from Freedom Writers film and other sources advocate. The second, writer watches and marks important dialog, identify and classify. The last, writer analyzes the changing of students’ behavior in room 203 which in joining gang in Wilson Senior High School as seen in Freedom Writers film.

The result in this research that, the students gangster’s behavior before they change the students is arrogant person, criminals and they do not have spirit to study. But there are some factors which cause the changing students gangster’s behavior happen, which follow: individual encouragement and environmental effect. The individual appears after the students get some stimulus

Sixth, thesis of English Department Faculty of Adab-Letters and Islamic

Culture the State Institute for Islamic Studies Sulthan Thaha Saifuddin Jambi, named

Mandrio by thesis entitled “The Role of Environment in Main Character’s

Behavior”37 this research discussed the main character’s behavior before she was sent to the boarding school and the way of environment influences main character’s behavior and the main character’s behaviors living in the boarding school. The writer

applied objective theory by M.H Abrams, psychological approach by Sigmun Freud and qualitative descriptive method to analyze this research. To support data analysis, the writer applied behavior theory by B.F Skiner. He also applied content analysis to explain and analyze the data. This research has some procedures. The first, the writer watched Wild Child film repeatedly. Then, he read Wild Child dialogues and marked some important words or events, to make understand in analyzing. The last, the writer collected, identified and classified the data based on the formulation of the problem.

The result of this research that Poppy’s behaviors before she was sent to boarding school are stubborn and impolite. She was categorized as a stubborn because she thought that her action was right and she did not want to hear her father’s and sister’s advice. She was also categorized as an impolite because she asked her friends to take her step mother’s wardrobes and she argued to her father bravely.

From review of related research, the writer concluded that there are similarities with my research that is, analyzing about the role of teachers who have responsibility, and the positive nature and the teacher has its own way so that students close to his teacher and there is a difference this research with them is on the research focused, the writer only focuses on the role of teacher in changing the character of one of the students that is Poppy More, where Poppy More is a very naughty student so sent by his father to the dorm. There is the role of the teacher will be seen, how the role of the teacher in changing the character Poppy More.

CHAPTER III

METHOD OF RESEARCH

3.1 Design of Research

In writing this thesis, the writer used qualitative research, because qualitative research is looked at social reality. Qualitative research is the translation according to the experience that is real, that the explanation derive from studies quantitative the change to qualitative research. According to Michael Cochran, “Qualitative research is characterized by its aims, which related to understanding some aspect of social life, and its methods which (in general) generate words, rather than numbers, as data for analysis”38 In this thesis, the writer used qualitative research, where the data are analyzed through interpreting, not statistic analysis. Nyoman Kutha Ratna stated that:

Metode kualitatif memberikan perhatian terhadap data alamiah, data dalam hubungannya dengan konteks keberadaanya. Cara-cara inilah yang mendorong metode kualitatif dianggap sebagai multi metode sebab penelitian pada giliran nya melibatkan sejumlah besar gejala sosial yang relevan. Dalam penelitian karya sastra, misalnya, akan dilibatkan pengarang, lingkungan social dimana pengarang berada, termasuk unsur-unsur kebudayaan.”39

Based on the quotation above, the qualitative research can be used in this research due to the qualitative method did not only involves the intrinsic aspect in literary work. But, it can be related with the extrinsic aspect in the literary itself. So,

38John W. Creswell, Qualitative Inquiry and Research Design, (United States of America: California 1997), p. 15. 39Nyoman Kutha Ratna, Teori, Metode dan Teknik Penelitian Sastra. Cet. Ke-III edisi revisi,(Yogyakarta: Pustaka Pelajar, 2011), p. 47.

31

32

that is why, the qualitative method also can be said as multi method. Because, the relating of the intrinsic aspect and extrinsic aspect in the literary itself. Descriptive is:

“Data yang di kumpulkan berupa kata-kata, gambar dan bukan angka-angka, hal itu di sebabkan oleh penerapan metode kualitatif.”40

According to Merriam in his book also stated that “Qualitative research is planning a research project can be compared to planning for a variation trip”.41So, qualitative method is analyzing about descriptive data and is it a process to do a research such as writer or spoken, at the person who is observed in this research, where qualitative method also analyzing about the data from outside which the data still not right. Qualitative research method is the method that relies on research through libraries that rely on data that is almost entirely from the library.

In this theory, qualitative research in research procedures which produce descriptive data as spoken words of the person or behavior being researched. Moh

It makes easy the research to get the right data. It means that qualitative method is analyzing about descriptive data who are used documentation in this research, by using this qualitative method, the writer felt easy to analyze the film.

40Hartinis Yatim, Metodologi Penelitian Pendidikandan Sosial Kualitatif dan Kuantitatif, (Jakarta: Bogor Pnerbit Ghalia Indonesia, 2009), p. 191. 41Sharan B. Merriam, Rualitative Research and Case Study Applications in Education, (New York City,1998), p. 3. 42Moh. Nazir, Motode Penelitian, (Bogor: Pnerbit Ghalia Indonesia, 2011), p. 54.

33

Based on those statements, it can be concluded that qualitative research is analyzing about descriptive data that is collected is in the form of the situation of the natural object. Where descriptive data such as writer or spoken, by using qualitative research the writer had answer about the question in analyzing the problem in Wild

Child film by Nick Moore

3.2 Sources of Data

The data were the main data directly related to the discussion of the thesis. In this research the writer took the primary data from Wild child film, a film which was directed by Nick Moore August in 2008, with the duration 115.22 minutes. The writer used the script, dialogues and picture on screen. The writer download the film from

Movie Online. Com and the scrip was taken from subscene.com.

3.3 Technique of Data Collection

In an effort to get the data and fact, in this research the writer used qualitative research, the techniques in qualitative research. The writer used documentation and sugiyono stated that “Dokumen merupakan catatan peristiwa yang sudah berlalu dan dokumen ialah setiap bahan tertulis, film ataupun dari record yang dipersiapkan karena adanya permintaan seorang penyidik”.43 It means that in qualitative research, the writer used some documents that have correlation or support the problem of the research, because this research is descriptive that is why the writer described and

43Sugiyono, Metode Penelitian Kuantitatif Kualitatif dan R & D, (Bandung: Alfabeta, 2009), p. 9.

34

analyzed the data that has been found in Wild Child film to answer of the problems that has been formulated in the formulation of the problem.

The writer had some steps in collecting the data, in order to make this research more specific. The steps in collecting data: first, the writer downloads the film as the data, second, the writer downloads the script as primary data, third, the writer watches the film repeatedly in other to know and understand the plot of the film that related to the title of the research, fourth, the writer reads the script in other to know the dialogues which are parts of data, fifth, the writer captures the pictures of important scenes as the data and the last, the writer will process the data that have been collected to continue the analysis.

3.4 Technique of Data Analysis

After collecting the data, the writer analyzed the data. In qualitative research, technique analysis data were used to answer the formulation of the problem in analysis data, the writer used a technique of data analysis. The writer had several techniques from the data analysis, in order to make this research more specific. According to

Susan Stainback, “Data analysis is critical to the qualitative research process. It is to recognition, study, and understanding of interrelationship and concept in your data that hypotheses and assertions can be developed and ecaluated”.44 In this research, the writer used technique descriptive analysis because this research is descriptive. It was way the writer described, analyzed the data that has been found in the script Wild

44Sugiyono, Metode Penelitian Kuantitatif Kualitatif dan R & D, p. 244.

35

Child film to find the answer the formulation of the problems that have been formulated.

The writer had some steps in analyzing the data, in order to make this research more specific. The steps are:

a. Identifying

The writer identified the data and made assumptions or finds strategies Roles of

teacher are used Mrs. Kingsley and some reasons she used it in Wild Child film.

b. Classifying the data

The writer classified the text event teaching which has correlated with the source

and combined in Wild Child film.

c. Analyzing, describing, explaining

The writer analyzed, described and explained the data about The Roles of

Teacher in Changing Poppy’s Attitude in Wild Child film.

d. Making the conclusion

After all the data have been analyzed, described and explained in the research,

the writer made the conclusion of the research.

36

CHAPTER IV

FINDING AND ANALYSIS

This chapter represents the finding and analysis of the data, analyzing through the words mean analyzing the words of the text of a story, another principle of analyzing the character s to behave according to their character istic in the story in this study the writer chose the theory of safety and esteem for this study discusses. Based on the findings of the data, exposure data obtained, and based on the discussion in accordance with the theory, it can be concluded the following result:

4.1 The Portrayed of Poppy More and Mrs. Kingsley

1. Poppy More

Wild Child’s Film by Nick more told about a young student. The name

was Poppy More. She had a problem with her Family especially with her

father. In the beginning of the film Poppy was a naughty girl that did not want

36

37

a. Dynamic Character

In this film, Poppy changed her habit because she came to Abbey

Mount School, before she was naughty and after she had leant in Abbey Mount

School she had changed her habit to be good person. It can be seen in the quotations below:

From the picture and dialogue above explained about Poppy a typically selfish and superficial Californian teenager who is sent to an English boarding school to straighten out and grow up by her father. Poppy always makes her sister and father angry because what she did, she invited all of her friends to make a party in her house, she asked her friends to take anything from truck for the party and made her house become mess. She liked enjoy and did a party every day. She always made mistake and just enjoy her life. It means that

CHAPTER V

CONCLUSIONS AND SUGGESTIONS

5.1 Conclusions

Based on the finding and analysis in the chapter four, the writer draws the following conclusion

1. Poppy More was dynamic character because she change her character from

naughty girl to the be good girl, she was also stock character because she was

arrogant and she had high fashion and major character , because she followed

every rules in Abbey Mount school. Mrs. Kingsley was Minor Character

because she helped Poppy to be good girl and always support her to change

the attitude and Protagonist because Mrs. Kingsley always give Poppy chance

to be good girl and make her father proud of her.

2. There were two ways Mrs. Kingsley changed Poppy’s attitude, Mrs. Kingsley

applied the roles and discipline for forming new habits in Abbey Mount

School that was why every students must follow that roles and discipline

including Poppy and Mrs. Kingsley Motivate Poppy, she gave her book to

learn from the book and also Abbey Mount School’s situation and she always

gave chance when Poppy made trouble.

61

62

3. There were two effects of Mrs. Kingsley’s efforts to Change Poppy’s attitude,

such as Poppy has changed the habit where she did the right thing and she had

brave to tell the true if she had started to make the fire and teamwork where

she had made Abbey Mount school became the winner in sport competition

like her mother before in 1976.

5.2 Suggestions

At the end of this thesis, the writer would like to give some suggestions:

People needed to be respected with the people around us, we must be positive thinking with people around us, and we have to support people who want to bring something good things.

The writer hopes that the other researcher can continue the research about the roles of teacher in changing Poppy’s attitude in Wild Child’s Film by Nick More, because there are many other cases which is good to be discussed and analyzed. Since this study only discusses about the ambitious main character, the writer suggests the next researchers to conduct further research to focus on all needs based on culture of school. Do not be afraid to do a literary research because analyzing a literary work is not hard and as long as we study hard in linguistic and literature, there is only the different perception about linguistic and literature relate to many others field of science.

SYNOPSIS

Poppy Moore, an affluent Californian teenager, executes a wild prank to ruin all of her father's girlfriend's belongings in front of her friends, telling everyone to throw away whatever they want and take it for themselves. When her father Gerry arrives on the scene, he announces that he is sending her to a boarding school in

England. Arriving at the school, Abbey Mount, Poppy meets the headmistress Mrs.

Kingsley, who she initially finds annoying; head girl Harriet Bentley, a tall, bossy girl who has two so-called "friends" named Jane and Charlotte that she treats like slaves, who follow her around, beg for her and agree with whatever she says; her "big sister",

Kate, and roommates Josie, Kiki and Jennifer "Drippy". Poppy's entire suitcase is left out in the rain, soaking everything. She meets the Matron and orders her to wash, dry and iron all her clothes. This lands the girls with three Sunday's detention, leaving her with no friends and her dormmates expressing their hate to her. She is miserable in her new life, feeling that she does not fit in as an outsider.87

After a small fight with Harriet in gym class, Poppy is called to the

Headmistress' Office, where she is given a punishment: read a book. Sitting on a bench outside sulking, Harriet spots her and orders her "maid", an intimidated Year 7 student, to drench Poppy with dirty coffee-filled water that was being used to age

Harriet's Keira Knightley costume for the school dance, but this ultimately results in

Poppy and Kate starting to form a friendship. Revealing that the girls' mobile phones, confiscated earlier on, were always intended to be decoys, Kate lets Poppy use her actual phone to call her friend Ruby in the US. However, when Ruby sees Poppy's message, she is disgusted and it is revealed that Poppy's boyfriend, Roddy, has been cheating on Poppy with her.

After Poppy reveals that her mother died several years ago in a car accident, her roommates decide to help her get expelled so that she can return home. Together they carry out several pranks, which gradually bring them closer together. When none of their plans work, they decide to seduce the headmistress's son, Freddie, who is strictly forbidden from fraternizing with any of the girls. She dances with Freddy at the school dance, much to Harriet's dismay, but Poppy trips and hits her head. This prompts Freddie to take the concussed girl outside for air, where he asks her out on a date.

The next day, Poppy discovers her talent for lacrosse and whips the school's team into shape, getting them into the finals. On the date, Poppy finds herself falling for Freddie. They kiss before returning to school. Entering her room, Poppy finds her roommates reading an email supposedly sent by herself, expressing that she thinks all of her new friends are losers. She then finds that Freddie has been sent a similar email and is thereafter ignored by all of her friends. With no one else to turn to, Poppy sneaks down to the cook's room and calls Ruby. Ruby, however, accidentally reveals

how much she dislikes Poppy and the fact that she is seeing Poppy's boyfriend.

Feeling even more alone, Poppy starts playing with her lighter and accidentally sets a curtain on fire. Hearing footsteps, she quickly puts out the fire and runs off. A few minutes later, she looks out her window to see a fire and immediately wakes the school.

When they find that Drippy is missing, Poppy runs into the burning school to rescue her. After the fire is put out, Freddie finds her lighter and gives it back to her, refusing to listen to what happened. Just as she realizes that she no longer wants to leave, Poppy goes to the headmistress and confesses. Afterwards, she finds a portrait of her mother in the 1976 Abbey Mount lacrosse team and begins to cry upon realizing that her mother also attended the school.

While Poppy waits for the Honour Court to decide if she should be expelled,

Freddie finds her crying and becomes convinced that the fire was an accident and forgives her. During the hearing, Poppy tells her story. Meanwhile, her roommates find out that Poppy did not send the emails. Going to the Court, they stand up for

Poppy, and Harriet accidentally confesses to restarting the fire after Poppy had put it out when she mentions Poppy's lighter, a fact not previously mentioned in the trial.

Poppy is subsequently absolved. Poppy's father comes to the game of the lacrosse finals, and is shocked by Poppy's dramatic change in appearance and how much she looks like her mother, also captain of the lacrosse team at Abbey Mount. Abbey

Mount wins the lacrosse finals and Harriet is expelled. Some months later, Poppy and

her friends (including Freddie) are shown relaxing in Malibu. Poppy ignores Ruby's phone calls, now fully aware that she was not the friend she thought she was. The film ends as they prepare to jump off the cliff that helped her towards finding herself and making proper friends
