Okoro, Ph.D, Department of History and International Relations, Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki Abstract: The Igbo inhabit what is presently referred to as South East Geopolitical zone in Nigeria. They also make up a sizeable chunk of the population of another geopolitical zone-South South. These areas were located in the colonial- inspired Oil Rivers Protectorate and the Colony and Protectorate of Southern Nigeria. Between 1906 and 1914, a Protectorate of Southern and Northern Nigeria stood side by side each other as the main administrative divisions of the colonial state. At the behest of the British Colonialists, a Western type and missionary-inspired educational system was introduced and accepted by the dominant ethnicities of Igbo and Yoruba of the Protectorate of Southern Nigeria; while the Hausa/Fulani Muslim – dominated Protectorate of Northern Nigeria rejected this education. This paper aims to analyze the development of the Western type educational system in the South East geopolitical zone (Igbo Area) of the country over the years since its implantation. It also seeks to determine what strides and challenges that have attended this development, and how the compatriots of the Igbo have viewed and reacted to this trend. The paper relies mainly on documented secondary sources and the publications and findings of such educational regulatory agencies as the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), among others, to reach its conclusions. -

Nigeria, the show case of British colonial rule and Empire, and transfer to independence, was at the point of disintegration in 1967. A section of the country, the Eastern region had dared to do the unthinkable at that time, to secede. The British and Nigerian governments were determined that it would not happen. The break away region, which called itself Biafra was blockaded by land, air and sea, and starved of weapons and the means of livelihood. -

Mornson In spite of the fact that Canadian universities do not appear to be able to staff their own rapidly growing departments with Canadian citizens, Canadian university teachers in steadily increas ing numbers are storing their furniture, inoculating their children for cholera and yellow fever, labelling their luggage with exotic names like Addis Ababa, Kuala Lumpur, Nairobi, Dar-es-Salaam, Kampala, or Lusaka, and disappearing for two or three years at a time. Sorne of these teachers are unsponsored, sorne. have UNESCO appointments, but the great majority of them are teaching abroad, either directly or indirectly, under the auspices of the Canadian In ternational Development Agency (CIDA), formerly known as the Department of External Aid. No matter how their appointments are made, they can he sure of one thing: while abroad they will have to make sorne important personal decisions with little precedent to guide them. It investigates the nexus between the politicization of humanitarian operations during the three-year conflict, and the death, hunger and starvation of millions of Biafrans. The study explores how the triangular politics among the Federal Military Government of Nigeria, the Biafran authorities, and the humanitarian organi- zations, in particular, the International Committee of the Red Cross impacted on the women, children and the elderly in Biafra. The author argues that the issue of sovereignty was only a cover to politicize the relief assistance going to Biafra and consequently abort the operations, thus, serving as a war strategy for both the Nigerian and Biafran authorities. INTRODUCTION The contradictions in Nigerian politics, including the interventions of the mili- tary, gave way to what stood out as one of the most brutal civil wars in Africa in the second half of the twentieth century. -

Introduction These pages deal with just one of the many activities aiming to create, maintain or restore the state of harmonious, constructive cooperation and just living together that we call peace. I would distinguish three main strands, all equally necessary, of these activities. One comprises all that we do to establish and nurture social and economic systems that minimise the inequality and want that generate conflict. The second is to act by all available non- violent means (I stress non-violence because it is an illusion to hold that peace can come through violence although it may come through power) against dangerous, violent, aggressive and oppressive policies. The third is to bring about reconciliation between those who are in conflict. I am concerned here with the third strand, which is itself divided between mediation (or conciliation which is usually used almost synonymously), negotiation and arbitration. Mediation, as I uses the term, aims to remove often largely psychological obstacles that prevent hostile parties coming together for constructive negotiation, which is the process by which protagonists reach an agreement through discussion and bargaining. In arbitration, the protagonists agree to accept the judgement of a respected third party. Reconciliation is a less specific term implying the restoration of friendship, and could in many ways also be applied to mediation. Most of what I have to say is based on direct experience of fairly large-scale violent conflict over the last two decades. -

“THE UNIVERSITY OF THE VILLAGE”: THE UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA, NSUKKA AND THE MAKING OF POST-INDEPENDENCE NIGERIA By Russell Wade Stevenson A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of History—Doctor of Philosophy 2020 ABSTRACT “THE UNIVERSITY OF THE VILLAGE”: THE UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA, NSUKKA AND THE MAKING OF POST-INDEPENDENCE NIGERIA By Russell Wade Stevenson This dissertation examines the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN, the first indigenous university in Nigeria and the first land grant university in Africa. This dissertation argues that UNN represented an innovative experiment in African higher education by expanding higher education to the general populace rather than the colonially privileged elite. However, its construction drew upon patronage politics and taxation regimes that expropriated funding at the same time other regions faced education taxes. Resistance to the University’s construction reflected local sentiments of inequitable distribution of tax resources throughout Nigeria’s Eastern Region. The University also served as a mechanism in post-independence Nigerian geopolitics: as a mechanism for removing the influence of the British-established University College, Ibadan and British educational models more generally. The University of Nigeria, Nsukka would be, as Taiye Selasi and Achille Mbembe have phrased it, an “Afro-politan” institution—porous and all-encompassing of knowledge systems throughout the globe. During the Nigeria-Biafra war, UNN faced sustained wartime damage—damage from it could not easily recover. The Nigeria-Biafra war laid the groundwork for a period of sustained infrastructural decay and internal resistance, even as the Nigerian federal government enjoyed larger access to oil revenue. -

When a map, drawing or chart, etc., is part of the material being photographed, a definite method of “sectioning” the material has been followed. It is customary to begin filming at the upper left hand corner of a large sheet and to continue from left to right in equal sections with small overlaps. I f necessary, sectioning is continued again—beginning below the first row and continuing on until complete.
