Doctor of Philosophy (Higher Education Administration), May, 1983, 159 pp., 21 tables, biblio- graphy, 63 titles. The problem of this study was to describe higher education in relation to economic development and social change in Nigeria. The purposes of this study were (1) to identify the needs for economic development and social change in Nigeria; (2) to relate higher education goals to the identified needs; (3) to determine the perceptions of the participating groups of students, faculty members, academic administrators, and government officials about what priority of importance is being placed and should be placed on higher education goals to achieve the national needs; (4) to formulate recommendations for the future development of higher educa- tion in relation to economic development and social change in Nigeria. Findings indicated that higher education policies in Nigeria were weak and often result in failure. Findings also showed that not only are the priorities established in the academic areas often inappropriate, but goals and objectives of higher education are not definitive due to successive interruptions in the Nigerian System.

  • Leather Wares Factories in Aba, Nigeria: Challenges and Way-Forward
LEATHER WARES FACTORIES IN ABA, NIGERIA: CHALLENGES AND WAY-FORWARD * 1 Ezinwa, Vincent Chi and Ikechukwu, Arinze Ernest General Studies Division Enugu State University of Science and Technology, Agbani Enugu State, Nigeria * Corresponding Author, Mobile: +234-806-840-8448, Email: [email protected] 1 Mobile: +234-803-099-9822, Email: [email protected] Abstract Ariaria International Market in Aba, Abia State of Nigeria houses a cluster of leatherworks factories that manufacture exported wares. Except their challenges are addressed, they are going down. The study was aimed at identifying their challenges and charting the way-forward. Key informant technique was used to elicit data from 17 respondents. The data were analyzed with the help of simple statistical tools. Results showed high exchange rate and other costs of importation of machinery and raw materials was a key challenge. Other challenges include lack of entrepreneurial spirit in graduate youths, poor doing business facilities and infrastructure, irregular electricity power supply, competition from imported goods, and lopsided development. Others are policy reversals, high and double taxation, difficulties in procuring business approval from government, high inflation rate, and unstable foreign exchange rate, in addition to corruption and fraud. The study recommends government encouragement of the leatherworks sub-sector with the right equipment and support. Keywords: Economic diversification, Leather wares factories, Aba, Nigeria Sustainable Human Development Review, Vol. 9, No. 3, Sept., 2017 Introduction Enterprises constitute the driving force for economic development and generate 60-70% of domestic employment. They can achieve equitable and sustainable industrial diversification in developing economies, like Nigeria, which is among the poorest countries in the world and experienced economic recession in 2017.

Okoro, Ph.D Department of History and International Relations, Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki *Corresponding Author: S.I. Okoro, Ph.D, Department of History and International Relations, Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki Abstract: The Igbo inhabit what is presently referred to as South East Geopolitical zone in Nigeria. They also make up a sizeable chunk of the population of another geopolitical zone-South South. These areas were located in the colonial- inspired Oil Rivers Protectorate and the Colony and Protectorate of Southern Nigeria. Between 1906 and 1914, a Protectorate of Southern and Northern Nigeria stood side by side each other as the main administrative divisions of the colonial state. At the behest of the British Colonialists, a Western type and missionary-inspired educational system was introduced and accepted by the dominant ethnicities of Igbo and Yoruba of the Protectorate of Southern Nigeria; while the Hausa/Fulani Muslim – dominated Protectorate of Northern Nigeria rejected this education. This paper aims to analyze the development of the Western type educational system in the South East geopolitical zone (Igbo Area) of the country over the years since its implantation. It also seeks to determine what strides and challenges that have attended this development, and how the compatriots of the Igbo have viewed and reacted to this trend. The paper relies mainly on documented secondary sources and the publications and findings of such educational regulatory agencies as the National Universities Commission (NUC) and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), among others, to reach its conclusions.

  • Contributions of Nzuko-Arochukwu to the Socio-Economic Growth of Arochukwu, 1981-2017 Emej
TOWN UNION AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT: CONTRIBUTIONS OF NZUKO-AROCHUKWU TO THE SOCIO-ECONOMIC GROWTH OF AROCHUKWU, 1981-2017 EMEJULU, Ifeyinwa Department of History and International Studies Faculty of Arts, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka And OKAFOR, Henry Ikenna Department of History and International Studies Faculty of Arts, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka Abstract Attempts on community development have been viewed from top-bottom approach, this is responsible for the little gains recorded with national programmes towards community development; hence the need for community participation. This study focuses on the contributions of Nzuko-Arochukwu to the socio-economic growth of Arochukwu. This umbrella body of the Aro has played a pivotal role in the infrastructural, economic, social and political transformation of Arochukwu, a society with rich historical and cultural narratives. Just like other towns in Igbo land, the impact of the Nigerian - Biafra war on Arochukwu was severe leading to massive infrastructural decay. The study appraises the concept of community development using the workings of Nzuko-Arochukwu to explore the prospects of town unions and their challenges in developing their communities. The study used the qualitative method based on critical analysis of events from facts available to the researchers emphasizing the combination of primary and secondary sources which include the use of books and journals. The study adopted the community action theory modeled by Paulo Freire which emphasizes on mobilization for community

How truly involved are the people in the practice of Ọkpukpere-chi? And, to what extent has its practice guarantee social stability within the Bende communities? This study articulates the idea of that Ọkpukpere-chi anchors its existence on only, but one Supreme Being: Chineke (God) and many lower supernatural beings or deities (Arusi). The world view of Ọkpukpere-chi cements relations among the various Bende communities. This assertion is clearly reflected in the way and manner that, Ọkpukpere-chi practice in more ways than one, served as an umbilical cord which connected and coordinated all other facets of life. All activities in the society, whether farming, hunting, marketing, social relations, and even recreation are governed by laws and taboos, and all blend inextricably in a complicated ritual with a view to throwing light on its structure, functions and modus operandi.
