Profile: Humphrey Lynch was tried at New Sarum on 5 March 1785 on two counts. The first charge was on the oath of Henry Hutchings for assaulting him on the highway and demanding his money at the Chapelry of St. James, Bishop's Canning. The second was for unlawfully, maliciously and feloniously assaulting Henry Hutchings with a stick with a felonious intent to steal his monies and goods against the statute. Lynch was sentenced to be hanged, but was reprieved and transported for seven years.1 Aged 22, he was later delivered to the Alexander and sailed with the First Fleet in 1787. Ann Stokes was tried at Warwick in March 1788 and transported on the Lady Juliana in 1790. They were both sent to Norfolk Island — Humphrey on the Sirius in 1790 and Ann on the Surprise, also in 1790. No record has been found of their marriage or the births/baptisms of any children. When Humphrey and his wife left Norfolk Island for Van Diemen's Land they were recorded as having had 15 acres of land on the island.2 A land grant of 30 acres at Clarence Plains was issued to them by Governor Macquarie in 1813. Ann Lynch died on 26 February 1816 at the age of 67 and was buried at St. David's. Humphrey Lynch was found hanged at New Town on 29 December 1816 by another Norfolk Island settler, Dennis Geary {City of Edinburgh, 1808). Humphrey's death and burial are not recorded in the official records and the PORPOISE 29 HMS PORPOISE - 3 The HMS Porpoise - 3* was purchased by the British Admiralty in 1804. Her length was 100 feet, width 30 feet, weight 399 tons and she was mounted with ten guns. She arrived from England under the command of Lieutenant Putland (son- in-law of Governor Bligh) in early August 1806, in the company of the Fortune, Lady Sinclair and the Alexander. Lieutenant-Governor Bligh, the new governor of , was on board the Lady Sinclair. On the arrival of the Porpoise, Governor Bligh ordered his Broad Pennant to be hoisted on boarding her, and was given a 15-gun salute. Then on 13 August 1806 she again took the salute, firing 12-15 guns in honour of Lieutenant-Governor King on his departure to England, immediately followed by a 15-gun salute on Bligh taking command of the colony. The Porpoise left Port Jackson for Norfolk Island on 28 May 1807 under the command of Lieutenant Simmons on colonial business (Lieutenant Putland having taken ill) which included taking government dispatches and stores to Van Diemen's Land via Norfolk Island. Again she was welcomed with a 13-gun salute on arriving at Hobart Town. During her stay her officers were entertained by a visiting American whaler, the Topaz, receiving a gift from her of 800 gallons of rum and 150 gallons of gin. The Porpoise returned to Port Jackson on 8 November 1807. The following month she left Port Jackson. Her orders were to evacuate the second contingent of settlers and their families from Norfolk Island and deliver them to Hobart Town. On leaving the island the settlers were rostered to take their turn at the watch. Water being short it was rationed to half a pint for each of the sheep and goats and one gallon for the cattle on board. Even with these precautions a large number of the stock were lost on the 22-day journey. A fire surrounding the township of Hobart, caused by bushfires brought about by extreme temperature, was observed by those aboard the Porpoise on her arrival. The Reverend Knopwood wrote in his diary that a gun was fired from the Porpoise the following morning for the pilot. On board were 180 settlers and their families. By 10 o'clock she was anchored in the bay and all those aboard were ready to attend the 11 o'clock Sunday church service. On conclusion of the service the minister received several of the officers. At 8 o'clock on Monday 18 January 1808 the colours were hoisted in honour of the birthday of Queen Charlotte, wife of King George III. The Ordinance fired two guns at 12 o'clock and 2 o'clock, the Porpoise doing the same. That night the Reverend Knopwood dined aboard the Porpoise. A week later he was again invited to dine as she was sailing back to Port Jackson with Lieutenant Simmons, Lieutenant Ellison, Mr Slone the Purser, and Mr Lutterell on board as passengers. While researching the Porpoise it was discovered that the name Porpoise was

The Memorial of John Cropper Respectfully Sheweth, That your Memorialist on the 21st. inst. sustained a great loss by fire. A neighbour burning off a little dead wood and at midday a very strong gale suddenly sprung up and spread the fire in a most raging manner towards Memorialists premises and to every assistance was given to repel said fire, it raged and over ruled all our exertions and in a few moments consumed your Memorialists dwelling house and piggery and together with all wearing apparel belonging to Memorialist and his wife and left them naked to the world with the exception of the clothes on their backs. In consequence of which your Memorialist is reduced to the greatest distress and want. Memorialist being 86 years of age and his wife 90 humbly pray that you will recommend his case to his Honour the Lt. Gov. for his most feeling consideration and assistance as he may deem the necessity of this case deserves. I am Sir your humble Memorialist will forever pray John Cropper Sandy Bay 22nd. Dan. Anderson Jas. Sharp Francis Allison 182413

It is not known at present who the wife of John Cropper was. It seems her name was Mary, as a Mary Cropper died at Sandy Bay on 6 November 1826, aged 92.14 There was a Mary Cropper on the 1822 Hobart Town Muster; free by servitude, arrived in the colony on the ship Lady Juliana.15 The three Williams children have proved somewhat of a problem. After James was baptised on Norfolk Island in 1806 their whereabouts are a mystery. Sarah, Jane and James were all on the 1805 Norfolk Island Muster. If their mother Frances had died on the island, it is possible that Sarah could have looked after the younger two and even had them baptised. How they arrived in Van Diemen's Land is not recorded on any of the shipping lists. From the Van Diemen's Land records, Jane and James were in Hobart shortly after the evacuees arrived from Norfolk Island. All three are on the 1818 muster. In 1812 Jane married Corporal William Davis, a Marine who had arrived with Lieutenant-Colonel Collins on the Ocean in 1804. William received a grant of 180 acres at Staffa (Bagdad) in 1813. Jane and William's first child Eliza was born on 13 August 1816. She married John Blacklow in 1834 and died in 1889.16 Their second child, a boy, William Thomas, was born on 9 March 1819. He married Harriet M. Plastow and died in 1884.17 In 1824 William and Jane were arrested and charged with receiving stolen sheep from Thomas Keane and Thomas Butler in 1823. The sheep had belonged to Edward Lord, John Beamont and Thomas Wells. Two hundred sheep were taken from Beddington Hill near Broadmarsh, then driven four miles, where Keane and Butler lit a fire and cooked a lamb for their meal. The next day they drove the sheep towards Black Brush where they killed the nine rams and hid them in the brush. From there they went on to Mangalore where they went to the Davis7 house. 50 EXILED! October 1849 he agreed to supply ice each day to Hobart by cart for 1 Spence per pound to subscribers and three pence to others. The construction of this ice house and the road up to the Springs was done by convicts at the cost of £49 16s 3d, including their food.9 Two months after the death of Elizabeth Webb in January 1853 John married her niece Emma Garth. John Webb died in 1881 and the hotel was bought by the Hadley family.10 Susannah Garth died nearly 20 years after Edward in 1841; she was 78 years old. She also was buried in St. David's Cemetery, as were other members of the family. Headstones were erected for the following:

Navigating Archive CD Books CDs All Archive CD Books products can be navigated easily using the handy bookmarks on each CD. The table of contents in most original books, and the original book index where it exists, can provide additional ways of finding the information required.

Searching Text on Archive CD Books Australia CDs Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology has been developing over the years as a useful mechanism to convert images (as Archive CD Books pages are) into text which can be searched. The quality of the OCR can still vary, and hence the searchability can vary. Around 95% or 99% of the words in books with good type are searchable—or even higher with very good type. OCR is now a wonderful searching aid in many instances but there is still no substitute for reading the book!

Different Versions of Adobe Acrobat Reader Adobe Acrobat Reader 4 or later should be used. Adobe Reader 6 (as it is now named) in fact has considerably better searching options and is recommended. • Acrobat Reader v4 has both a “Find” and a “Search” tool. Those tools are two *totally* different things. Our CDs (that are searchable) work with the *FIND* tool • Acrobat Reader v5 has only a “Find” tool (not a “search” tool). Our CDs (that are searchable) work with the *FIND* tool. • Adobe Reader v6 has only a “Search” tool (not a tool labelled “Find”). HOWEVER — what is called “Search” is the same as the tool that used to be called “Find” Our CDs (that are searchable) work with the *SEARCH* tool

Tips For Searching and Getting More From the CD Books • update to Adobe Reader 6 for more versatile searching options, including the ability to bring up a list of all instances of the word you are searching for — across multiple files on a single CD in a single search request. • enter the MINIMUM number of characters needed to bring up the search results required. • use Adobe Reader 6 to do some trial searches to try to identify the characters that may be misread. These can show up in the extra text in the search results list (Adobe 6 only). A few minutes trial will help you to avoid using characters that are more prone to being misread, e.g. try entering “rederi” if you want “Frederick”, but find that the letters “F” “c” and “k” are sometimes misread. • use the “Match whole word” option to eliminate unnecessary items in your results list, e.g. to eliminate all the blacksmiths and tinsmiths etc when you only want the name Smith. • use the “Match case” option to eliminate all the occupations “smith” if you only want the name “Smith”. • don’t just search for names. Search the book for other names, places and subjects of interest: › look for others of the same name › look for others who lived in the same place or street › who was the postmaster or police officer in the town? › how often and at what time did the coach arrive in town? › what churches were there and what time were services held? › what other activities were there in the community? › look for others who had the same occupation of other interests • all of this and more may be available in a seemingly mundane book such as a directory. You can learn much of the background of life at the time, even if your ancestor is not listed there. • Many CDs have only one file, but some have the book content spread over several files. Adobe Reader normally searches in the file that is open at the time. If you wish to search ALL files at once choose the "All PDF documents in" option and select the CD drive or directory the files are in—Adobe Reader 6 only. ADOBE ACROBAT SEARCHING IS A WONDERFUL FIRST FINDING AID. BUT DO NOT RELY ON IT TO PICK UP ALL THE INFORMATION YOU WANT
