HUMPHREY LYNCH TRIED: New Sarum, Wiltshire, 5 March 1785, 7 yrs TRANSPORTED: Alexander (1st Fleet) TO NORFOLK ISLAND: Sirius, 17 March, 1790 TRADE: Tailor MARRIED: Ann Stokes; no record found DIED: 28 December 1816 LAND: 30 acres Clarence Plains in 1813 (LSD 354, vol. 3, p. 230) FAMILY WIFE: ANN STOKES TRIED: Warwick, March 1788 TRANSPORTED: Lady Juliana (2nd Fleet) TO NORFOLK ISLAND: Surprise, 7 August 1790 DIED: 26 February 1816, aged 67 BURIED: St. David's, Hobart Profile: Humphrey Lynch was tried at New Sarum on 5 March 1785 on two counts. The first charge was on the oath of Henry Hutchings for assaulting him on the highway and demanding his money at the Chapelry of St. James, Bishop's Canning. The second was for unlawfully, maliciously and feloniously assaulting Henry Hutchings with a stick with a felonious intent to steal his monies and goods against the statute. Lynch was sentenced to be hanged, but was reprieved and transported for seven years.1 Aged 22, he was later delivered to the Alexander and sailed with the First Fleet in 1787. Ann Stokes was tried at Warwick in March 1788 and transported on the Lady Juliana in 1790. They were both sent to Norfolk Island — Humphrey on the Sirius in 1790 and Ann on the Surprise, also in 1790. No record has been found of their marriage or the births/baptisms of any children. When Humphrey and his wife left Norfolk Island for Van Diemen's Land they were recorded as having had 15 acres of land on the island.2 A land grant of 30 acres at Clarence Plains was issued to them by Governor Macquarie in 1813. Ann Lynch died on 26 February 1816 at the age of 67 and was buried at St. David's. Humphrey Lynch was found hanged at New Town on 29 December 1816 by another Norfolk Island settler, Dennis Geary {City of Edinburgh, 1808). Humphrey's death and burial are not recorded in the official records and the PORPOISE 29 HMS PORPOISE - 3 The HMS Porpoise - 3* was purchased by the British Admiralty in 1804. Her length was 100 feet, width 30 feet, weight 399 tons and she was mounted with ten guns. She arrived from England under the command of Lieutenant Putland (son- in-law of Governor Bligh) in early August 1806, in the company of the Fortune, Lady Sinclair and the Alexander. Lieutenant-Governor Bligh, the new governor of New South Wales, was on board the Lady Sinclair. On the arrival of the Porpoise, Governor Bligh ordered his Broad Pennant to be hoisted on boarding her, and was given a 15-gun salute. Then on 13 August 1806 she again took the salute, firing 12-15 guns in honour of Lieutenant-Governor King on his departure to England, immediately followed by a 15-gun salute on Bligh taking command of the colony. The Porpoise left Port Jackson for Norfolk Island on 28 May 1807 under the command of Lieutenant Simmons on colonial business (Lieutenant Putland having taken ill) which included taking government dispatches and stores to Van Diemen's Land via Norfolk Island. Again she was welcomed with a 13-gun salute on arriving at Hobart Town. During her stay her officers were entertained by a visiting American whaler, the Topaz, receiving a gift from her of 800 gallons of rum and 150 gallons of gin. The Porpoise returned to Port Jackson on 8 November 1807. The following month she left Port Jackson. Her orders were to evacuate the second contingent of settlers and their families from Norfolk Island and deliver them to Hobart Town. On leaving the island the settlers were rostered to take their turn at the watch. Water being short it was rationed to half a pint for each of the sheep and goats and one gallon for the cattle on board. Even with these precautions a large number of the stock were lost on the 22-day journey. A fire surrounding the township of Hobart, caused by bushfires brought about by extreme temperature, was observed by those aboard the Porpoise on her arrival. The Reverend Knopwood wrote in his diary that a gun was fired from the Porpoise the following morning for the pilot. On board were 180 settlers and their families. By 10 o'clock she was anchored in the bay and all those aboard were ready to attend the 11 o'clock Sunday church service. On conclusion of the service the minister received several of the officers. At 8 o'clock on Monday 18 January 1808 the colours were hoisted in honour of the birthday of Queen Charlotte, wife of King George III. The Ordinance fired two guns at 12 o'clock and 2 o'clock, the Porpoise doing the same. That night the Reverend Knopwood dined aboard the Porpoise. A week later he was again invited to dine as she was sailing back to Port Jackson with Lieutenant Simmons, Lieutenant Ellison, Mr Slone the Purser, and Mr Lutterell on board as passengers. While researching the Porpoise it was discovered that the name Porpoise was * The designations Porpoise - 1, 2 and 3 are used only for reference here, not to indicate that there were only three ships called the Porpoise. 34 EXILED!
