Journal of Ethnobiology and Ethnomedicine (2016) 12:47 DOI 10.1186/s13002-016-0118-7 RESEARCH Open Access Folk knowledge of invertebrates in Central Europe - folk taxonomy, nomenclature, medicinal and other uses, folklore, and nature conservation Viktor Ulicsni1* , Ingvar Svanberg2 and Zsolt Molnár3 Abstract Background: There is scarce information about European folk knowledge of wild invertebrate fauna. We have documented such folk knowledge in three regions, in Romania, Slovakia and Croatia. We provide a list of folk taxa, and discuss folk biological classification and nomenclature, salient features, uses, related proverbs and sayings, and conservation. Methods: We collected data among Hungarian-speaking people practising small-scale, traditional agriculture. We studied “all” invertebrate species (species groups) potentially occurring in the vicinity of the settlements. We used photos, held semi-structured interviews, and conducted picture sorting. Results: We documented 208 invertebrate folk taxa. Many species were known which have, to our knowledge, no economic significance. 36 % of the species were known to at least half of the informants. Knowledge reliability was high, although informants were sometimes prone to exaggeration. 93 % of folk taxa had their own individual names, and 90 % of the taxa were embedded in the folk taxonomy. Twenty four species were of direct use to humans (4 medicinal, 5 consumed, 11 as bait, 2 as playthings). Completely new was the discovery that the honey stomachs of black-coloured carpenter bees (Xylocopa violacea, X. valga)were consumed. 30 taxa were associated with a proverb or used for weather forecasting, or predicting harvests. Conscious ideas about conserving invertebrates only occurred with a few taxa, but informants would generally refrain from harming firebugs (Pyrrhocoris apterus), field crickets (Gryllus campestris) and most butterflies. -

Here, two novel peptide toxins (Cl6a and Cl6b) were isolated from the venom of the spider Cyriopagopus longipes and characterized. Cl6a and Cl6b were shown to be inhibitors of tetrodotoxin-sensitive (TTX-S), but not TTX-resistant, sodium channels. Among the TTX-S channels investigated, Cl6a and Cl6b showed the highest degree of inhibition against NaV1.7 (half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC ) of 11.0 2.5 nM and 18.8 2.4 nM, respectively) in 50 ± ± an irreversible manner that does not alter channel activation, inactivation, or repriming kinetics. Moreover, analysis of NaV1.7/NaV1.8 chimeric channels revealed that Cl6b is a site 4 neurotoxin. -

Szeged (Received October 8, 1976) Abstract The nervous system of the mayfly larva is a modified ventral nervous cord, the ancient traits of which are the double connectives providing segmentation and the partial fusion inside segments. Its characteristic, poiting to the development, is the formation of complexes of the third thoracal and seventh abdominal ganglia. Comparison of the results with other literature data indicates that the mayfly is one of the most ancient species of the Ephemeroptera. Introduction In recent years, research into the life, organizational construction, and occur- rence of the Arthropoda has become more and more comprehensive. It is under- standable therefore, that such knowledge relating to the Ephemeroptera is being completed with an ever increasing number of data. The mayflies, that representing one of the most ancient groups of the present-day Arthropoda, may afford a reliable starting-point for the solution of a number of problematical questions (mainly with respect to evolution, but often morphology or anatomy, as well). The peculiar, hidden life, long development, and restricted geographical occur- ence of the mayfly (Palingenia longicauda) larva are all factors explaining why we know comparatively little about the constructions of their organisms and organs (LANDA, 1969; SWAMMERDAM, 1675). In the present paper, our aim was an exact anatomical study of the central nervous system of the larva. This work will serve as the basis for further of our results a waiting publication. -

Adults are redescribed, and larvae are described for the first time, based on sets of larval exuviae. The monotypic genus Mortogenesia Lestage, 1923 is redefined using both adult and larval characteristics: eyes not contiguous, distinctly separated by a wide gap; vestigial mandibular tusks present, with 3–4 rounded lateral projec- tions; forewing veins MP1 and iMP not brought together; CuA furcation absent on forewing; both claws similarly shaped in males; hind tarsi five-segmented; penes with roughly triangular, apically rounded and divergent lobes (in adults); seven conspicuous stout teeth on outer margin of mandibular tusk, with no apical spine-like setae; maxillary palps two-segment- ed; distal segment of labial palps asymmetric and bulbous; basal segment of labial palps densely pilose; forelegs with rel- atively short, triangular claws that are basally wider than tarsi; foretibiae with stout spines only; and a simple, leaf-like gill 1 (in larvae). -
