  • Bolan, Bowie and the Carnivalesque
Children of the Revolution: Bolan, Bowie and the Carnivalesque Alison Blair A thesis submitted for the degree of Master of Arts At the University of Otago 2016 i Abstract David Bowie and Marc Bolan were two glam rock stars who, in the 1970s, presented audiences with carnivalesque ‘alternatives’ to everyday reality. As a time of crisis and transformation, the 1970s in Britain has been characterised as a period of particularly difficult socio-economic turmoil, in a still relatively conservative society – particularly in relation to conventional norms of identity, ‘authenticity’, gender and sexuality. Bolan and Bowie, through their performance personae and narrative spaces, provided both a form of ‘escape’ from the lived experience of these socio-economic difficulties, and a counter-hegemonic alternative to these aforementioned norms. That is, their ‘alternate identities’ challenged conventional norms of authenticity and of identity itself, and their ‘alternate sexualities’ presented audiences with counter-hegemonic representations of gender and sexuality. Moreover, their ‘alternate realities’ were carnivalesque, Otherworldly narrative spaces that their alternate identities inhabited, providing an escape from the difficulties of life in 1970s Britain. In this thesis, I explore these various ‘alternatives’ through a Bakhtinian framework in order to discuss the ways that they represented, in Bakhtin’s terms, a carnivalesque ‘second life of the people’ – a social safety valve and escape from these increasingly difficult socio-economic conditions. In chapter one, I place Bolan and Bowie within the context of 1970s Britain, and within the context of the glam rock genre. I explore the ways that glam has been framed as either reactionary or radical, and I align my own research with the latter approach.

  • Marc Bolan, David Bowie, and the Counter-Hegemonic Persona: 'Authenticity', Ephemeral Identities, and the 'Fantastical
MEDIANZ ! VOL 15, NO 1 ! 2015 DOI: 10.11157/medianz-vol15iss1id11 - ARTICLE - Marc Bolan, David Bowie, and the Counter-Hegemonic Persona: ‘Authenticity’, Ephemeral Identities, and the ‘Fantastical Other’ Alison Blair Abstract In the 1970s, glam rockstars Marc Bolan and David Bowie were among the first pop music artists to challenge norms of identity, authenticity, gender and sexuality. They presented audiences with a range of counter-hegemonic personae that enacted a departure from the conventional—the alien, the warlock, the ‘bopping elf’, occult magician and hybrid being. For Bolan and Bowie fans, these ‘fantastical Others’ represented an escape from the increasingly unpalatable social and economic conditions of everyday life in 1970s Britain—a period characterised by rising unemployment, declining consumer buoyancy, and ongoing industrial action—and, furthermore, they challenged ideas of essentialised identity and authenticity, by presenting personae that were deliberately artificial, ephemeral, and of fantastical, alternative realities. This article aims to contribute to debates on glam by framing the work of its two most pivotal artists—Bolan and Bowie—in terms of Bakhtin’s notion of the carnivalesque. Bolan, Bowie and the 1970s Writing in 1998, the film director Todd Haynes noted that during his research for the film Velvet Goldmine (1998) there were no full-length books in print about glam rock, ‘nothing to single it out as a comprehensive cultural phenomenon’ (Hoskyns 1998, xi). This is no longer the case, as interest in the 1970s and in glam rock has steadily grown in recent years, both in academia and in the popular imagination. Given glam’s relatively brief popularity, it might be tempting to view the genre’s combination of glitter, glamour, showmanship and androgyny as an anomaly of sorts—an unexpected diversion—and leave it at that.

  • Is Stage-Gay Queerbaiting? the Politics of Performative Homoeroticism in Emo Bands
1 Is stage-gay queerbaiting? The politics of performative homoeroticism in emo bands Abstract Queerbaiting is a fast-expanding topic in media and cultural studies. In 2015, this author attempted to define queerbaiting as a strategy by which writers and networks attempt to gain the patronage of queer viewers via the suggestion of queer relationships, before denying and laughing of the possibility. Joseph Brennan’s 2019 edited volume has greatly developed the concept of queerbaiting to include a range of meanings, from media industries’ pledges of allegiance to LGBT causes which are not delivered upon, to courting queer viewers via paratexts that imply queer relationships which don’t exist in text. Applying the concept of queerbaiting to bands complicates these ideas, as the ‘truth’ or ‘delivery’ of queer representation lies not in a fictional text but the public persona of real performers. Through an examination of stage-gay, the notorious practice of queer performativity onstage by straight performers in the emo music subculture, I investigate how a restrictive notion of ‘truth’ in discussions of queerbaiting can actually close off the very possibilities of transformation and open-ended configurations of sexuality that Doty’s formulation of queerness promised. Emo bands are the natural case study here, as emo is an offshoot of hardcore and punk that sought to complicate the hegemonic masculinities that dominated those genres, both in its musical and lyric content, and the public and paratextual performativity of its artists. 2 Is stage-gay queerbaiting? The politics of performative homoeroticism in emo bands Introduction Queerbaiting is a fast-expanding topic in media and cultural studies.
