New records of Fredius denticulatus (H. Milne-Edwards, 1853) and F. reflexifrons (Ortmann, 1897), and the eastern limits of the distribution of pseudothelphusid crabs (Crustacea: Decapoda) in Brazil. Célio MAGALHÃES1,4; Fernando Araujo ABRUNHOSA2; Milena de Oliveira PEREIRA3; Marlon Aguiar MELO2 ABSTRACT The occurence of Fredius reflexifrons (Ortmann, 1897), a pseudothelphusid crab widely distributed in the Amazon region and the Atlantic Guianas, is recorded from the state of Ceará, northeastern Brazil. Other records of this species and Fredius denticulatus (H. Milne-Edwards, 1853) from the Amazon region are also presented. A discussion is made on the eastern limits of the distribution of the family Pseudothelphusidae in Brazil. São feitos registros adicionais de dessa espécie e de Fredius denticulatus (H. Milne-Edwards, 1853) para a região amazônica. É feita uma discussão sobre os limites orientais da distribuição da família Pseudothelphusidae no Brasil. FRAGOSO White-lipped peccaries (white-lips—Tayassu pecari) are among the largest of Neotropical forest mammals, reaching weights of about 50 kg (Sowls 1984; Fragoso 1998a). They can form groups with more than 100 animals, and anecdotal reports exist of groups with 1,000 and even 2,000 individuals (Mayer and Brandt 1982; May- er and Wetzel 1987; Fragoso 1994). Occasionally, herds and even entire populations have disappeared from areas where they were usually found, leading some re- searchers to hypothesize that white-lips are migratory, probably in response to vari- ations in food supply (e.g., Kiltie 1980; Kiltie and Terborgh 1983; Sowls 1984; Bod- mer 1990; Vickers 1991). This hypothesis has been supported by the stories of several Amerindian groups, who tell that local disappearances of white-lipped pec- caries are normal and that the herds return after a given time (e.g., Vickers 1991). Further support for the migratory hypothesis was provided by Kiltie (1980) and Kiltie and Terborgh (1983), who using a mathematical model based on step length and number of animals, demonstrated that a herd could cover an area of more than 200 km2. -

E-mail: [email protected] ABSTRACT. Pseudothelphusidae is a well diversified group of Neotropical freshwater crabs currently compris- ing 40 genera and at least 255 species and subspecies. The biology of these crabs has been an active field of research in the last 20 years. The aim of the present contribution is to discuss the significance of the new knowledge on the biology of these freshwater crabs after September 1992, to stress the interconnection of the diverse lines of research and at the same time to suggest promising new lines of investigation. All taxa described from September 1992 to October 2004 are listed, including one genus, one subgenus, 62 species and five subspecies. The implications of this new knowledge on the taxonomy, systematic and biogeography of the family are commented. KEY WORDS. Biodiversity, biogeography, Neotropical region, taxonomy. RESUMO. Avanços recentes no estudo da biologia dos caranguejos de água doce neotropicais da família Pseudothelphusidae (Crustaceaustacea, Decapodapoda, Brachyura). Pseudothelphusidae é um grupo bem diversificado de caranguejos de água doce neotropicais que compreende atualmente 40 gêneros e pelo menos 255 espécies e subespécies. A biologia desses caranguejos vem sendo um ativo campo de pesquisa nos últimos 20 anos. O objetivo desta contribuição é discutir o significado do conhecimento adquirido sobre a biologia desses caran- guejos dulcícolas após setembro de 1992, enfatizar a relação das diversas linhas de pesquisa e, ao mesmo tempo, sugerir novas linhas promissoras de investigação. -
New Species, Cladistic Relationships, and Biogeography of the Genus Fredius (Decapoda: Brachyura: Pseudothelphusidae) from South America
JOURNAL OF CRUSTACEAN BIOLOGY, 12(2): 298-311, 1992 NEW SPECIES, CLADISTIC RELATIONSHIPS, AND BIOGEOGRAPHY OF THE GENUS FREDIUS (DECAPODA: BRACHYURA: PSEUDOTHELPHUSIDAE) FROM SOUTH AMERICA Gilberto Rodriguez and Guido Pereira ABSTRACT The taxonomy of the genus Fredius Pretzmann, 1967, is reviewed, and new taxa are described: Fredius adpressus, F. adpressus piaroensis, F. platyacanthus, and F. estevisi siapensis. The 8 species of this genus inhabit 4 major basins of different geological age in northern South America. The Orinoco basin is the oldest, followed by the Essequibo-Cuyuni basin. The lower Amazon basin, formed from Tertiary to Holocene by alluvionic deposition, is younger than these two. The Atlantic area, formed mainly by marine regressions, is the youngest. The phy- logenetic relationships within Fredius, studied by means of a cladistic analysis, were compared with the relationships of these areas using Brooks parsimony analysis. The phylogenetic data fully agree with the area cladogram. The position of the ancestors within the area cladogram shows that most of them were present in a hypothetical major basin comprising the present Orinoco, Essequibo, and Cuyuni rivers, and that much of the evolution of the group occurred there. There is some ambiguity about the possible origin of 2 widespread species. The most parsimonious explanation for one of them is that it originated in the Atlantic drainage and then dispersed into the lower Amazon basin. The genus Fredius Pretzmann, 1967, near Puerto Ayacucho; (2) The Cuao River, a minor comprises five species of large fresh-water tributary of the Orinoco, near Puerto Ayacucho; (3) The Parguaza River, another minor tributary of the crabs restricted to the Guianas and the Am Orinoco, north of the Cuao River; (4) The Cunucun- azon basin, where they inhabit, with one uma River, an affluent of the Orinoco, with its head exception, the lowland rivers. -

INTRODUCTION The mountains of the Guiana Shield are located between the Río Orinoco to the North and the Río Negro to the South, in North- ern South America. Its highest prominence is the Pico da Neblina (3045 m). This group of mountain systems is developed essentially over two geological substrates: a basement of igneous-metamorphic rocks (acid granites) and a layer of sedimentary rocks (sandstones) deposited over that basement (Maguire 1979). -

SILVA Abstract: Freshwater crabs are important components of aquatic ecosystems; however, their distributions are restricted because of characteristics of their life history, which hinder conservation strategies. Fredius reflexifrons is a widely distributed freshwater crab of the Amazon basin with relictual occurrences in small wetlands on the Planalto da Ibiapaba in Northeastern Brazil. Habitat degradation, destruction of forest patches, channeling of water bodies, and the use of land for legume cropping can seriously impact the species by leading to the extinction of its relic populations, which have limited distributions in the Área de Proteção Ambiental (APA; Environmental Protection Area) Bica do Ipu of the Planalto da Ibiapaba. The objectives of this study were to assess the distribution of F. reflexifrons in APA Bica do Ipu, identify the main impacts from anthropic activities, suggest potential actions to mitigate these impacts, besides providing recommendations for the expansion of the APA. Fredius reflexifrons was recorded in eleven sites in the Planalto da Ibiapaba, of which nine are new records and five are not located within the APA. These findings evidence the need of expanding the APA to encompass the newly known distribution of F. -

ABSTRACT Freshwater crabs are one of the macro-invertebrate groups that are particularly ecologically important in the inland waters on a global scale. In addition to the ecological significance of freshwater crabs they are also medically important as medical and pharmaceutical materials (i.e. row material in chitin and chitosan production). However, uncooked freshwater crabs are also medically important as a treat for human health in Asia, Africa, and the Neotropics. Furthermore, they are consumed as food and are used as food additive and fertilizer; especially crab processing residues are used as feed additive. Except Eriocheir sinensis, other freshwater crab species are provided only by fishing from natural resources (i.e. river, lake and pond). In recent years, various production methods are employed for the grow-out of E. sinensis. For example, net- pens installed in shallow lakes, earthen ponds, paddy fields, and small lakes and reservoirs are the most common systems employed for grow-out. On the other hand, earthen ponds and paddy fields are commonly used for seed rearing of the crab. In conclusion, this review shows that freshwater crabs have potentials as an edible and culture candidate species.
